Letter from the PresidentGreetings, neighbors, As I write this in late May, we are looking forward to another great June Day with a few changes from recent years. After I attended the June Day committee meeting the other day, I can report that it appears to be shaping up to be great event.

Just to mention a few of the activities and attractions: the Parade will include the always popular Ghostbusters group who will be hanging around afterwards to mingle with the crowd. It looks like we will be able to get appearances from the Detroit Police Department’s Mounted Police, the Helicopter, the Bomb Squad and the Canine Corp. The Detroit Fire Department is also expected to appear unless they are called away on a run and the kids enjoy inspecting the truck up close.

We will have the usual parade and bike decorating competition, followed by a brief ceremony to recognize the Grand Opening of the renovated Kitchen and all the usual Field games. Additional attractions include a petting zoo, ponies, and the street-based Train which will be giving rides most of the day. This year the food during the afternoon will be provided by food trucks, including an Ice Cream Truck, a Hot Dog truck, a Fish & Shrimp truck, and a Roll Up truck, at least. An expanded Craft Bazaar should add a different flavor to the activities. A returning tradition which we have not had for a few years will be the free evening concert – this year featuring the Detroit Social Blues Band – sounds great to me! Hope you will be able to attend for at least part of the day.

Part of the fun of June Day is in helping the neighborhood kids have a great time. To do that we still need volunteers, so please consider signing up now. Please check out the volunteer schedule at http://www.nrpca.org/june-day You can fill out a form online. You can also email the Chairperson TK ([email protected]) and the Community House Manager, Deena ([email protected]) if you have questions. Come on out and be a part of the neighborhood and enjoy the fun!

On the renovation front, the playscape improvements have been held up by the excessively wet weather. The work started one day but was suspended early that day as it became apparent the ground was simply holding too much water. Assuming we get some dry weather soon both the playscape and the kitchen will be done before June Day. Even if not totally complete the kitchen is expected to be sufficiently done so we will have a Grand Opening that day and residents can take a peek at the renovated kitchen. I am also very happy to report that the baseball field has been regraded and is being used by the coach pitch teams. Also, new benches are coming and may be in before June Day. In any event, the diamond is looking better than I can remember at any time in the last 30 years.

See you around the Park,

Bill Frey

89th Annual

North Rosedale Park June DayJune 8th

June Day is an annual event in North Rosedale Park that signals the beginning of Summer. Continuously for 89 years neighbors and friends have gathered at the Community House for outdoor fun. Think of it as a small town founders day with activities for children

and adults. It is a way for everyone to come together and share in what we all love about our little slice of Detroit - Community! There is a parade through the neighborhood down Bretton where children decorate their bikes (prizes awarded!), blocks have

floats (decorating a pickup truck with families in the back is a favorite), and our community partners share in the festivities. The afternoon is filled with outdoor fun with free and low cost activities. Challenge your neighbors in the pie eating contest or sack

race! In the evening we will have a food trucks and live entertainment by the Detroit Social Club. Come one, come all.
