In this new scholarly-critical edition of the Messa da Requiem, the
editor, on the basis of all available sources, succeeds in presenting
practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning
the interpretation of this famous work. A hitherto unexamined
handwritten reduction for voice and piano casts a new light on the
evaluation of several known sources and leads to new philological
and editorial decisions.
This edition presents a detailed Critical Commentary as well as a
preface on the genesis and history of the work. In addition the
preface includes a short section on the most important editions
published in the 19th century and compares them with regard to
problematic passages in the work and the suggestions they made
to solve musical problems.

Mozart’s Missa in C major (K. 220), nicknamed the Sparrow Mass
for its frequently recurring characteristic motifs in the violins, has
retained a firm place in the choral repertoire to the present day. Now
it has been arranged for female choir and is appearing as part of the
recently started Bärenreiter Female Choir series. Heribert Breuer has
judiciously transferred the tenor and bass solos to the high voices and
incorporated the original soprano and alto parts largely unchanged
into the solo and chorus parts. He has thereby retained the work’s
original substance while giving it a wholly new and delightful sound.
Heribert Breuer was professor of choral conducting and music theory
at Berlin University of the Arts until 2010. He is the founder and
director of the Berlin Bach Akademie and has made a name for
himself with his many arrangements of works from Bach to Schubert.

Edited by Antje Wissemann
Performing score (Lat)
BA 7594 · approx. € 11.50
(replaces BA 5419)
To appear in March 2014
Frank Martin's style of composition is characterized by elements
of French Impressionism, modern tonality and expressive musical
language. His double choir a cappella mass was composed between
1922 and 1926 but it was not performed until 1963 in Hamburg. It has
been a great favourite with capable choirs since its first publication
by Bärenreiter in 1972 (BA 5419). It can be performed equally well in
the concert hall and the church.
This first ever Urtext edition is based on the autograph score as well
as on previously disregarded preliminary studies. The preface and
Critical Commentary provide an insight into the genesis and history
of the work. The larger format ensures a clearly improved readability.

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is the only concerto where no
authentic manuscript exists for the solo part. The autograph of the
score is available whereby the articulation, dynamics and pedal
markings are for the most part absent. However, Beethoven oversaw
the first printed edition of the solo part (1804) with great diligence.
Plate corrections bear witness to the care with which Beethoven
placed slurs and pedal markings in order to be consistent and
unambiguous.
By means of a thorough examination of the sources this new
Urtext edition presents many corrections in terms of articulation,
dynamics and notes. In particular, the orchestral parts have been
corrected for the first time since Beethoven’s lifetime.
• Urtext edition reflecting the latest musicological research
• With many corrections in the solo part and orchestral parts
• Piano reduction with a separate solo piano part
• A must for pianists, orchestras and Beethoven scholars

Urtext edition of Brahms’ Handel Variations
Christian Köhn is a pianist with a deep understanding of Brahms’
piano music. Now he has edited a new Urtext edition of Brahms’
variations (1861) on an eight-bar theme from Handel’s Keyboard Suite
No. 1 (Suite de pièces de Clavecin, Vol. 2). Köhn has drawn on every
available source and incorporated the most recent musicological
discoveries. With his fingering, a well-presented layout and
optimum page turns, the volume meets all the demands of a
practical performing edition. A detailed foreword illuminates the
work’s genesis and sources while presenting valuable information
on contemporary performance practice. This scholarly-critical
edition of the Handel Variations adds a central work to Bärenreiter’s
comprehensive series of Brahms’ piano music in Urtext editions.

BÄRENREITER URTEXT

BA 10848 · approx. € 10.95
To appear in April 2014
Bach’s Goldberg Variations have remained a challenge for every
harpsichord player and pianist to the present day. One special
problem with performances on a modern piano is that Bach wrote
this work for a two-manual harpsichord. Ragna Schirmer’s fingering
offers the most convenient solutions for the many crossings of the
hands necessary on the piano. She also took the engraving of the
original print of 1741 as an important guide for dividing the parts
between the hands.
• Scholarly-critical Urtext performing edition based on the
New Bach Edition
• With fingering for performance on modern pianos as well as
a commentary regarding the fingering
• Division of parts between the hands based on Bach’s original print
Ragna Schirmer has already provided fingering for the Bärenreiter
edition of Bach’s Six Partitas: First Part of the Clavier Übung (BA 5247).

Erwin Schulhoff:Jazz Pieces for Piano
BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Edited by Michael Kube
BA 9559 · approx. € 42.95
To appear in May 2014Erwin Schulhoff was a German-speaking composer who was born in
Prague in 1894 and died in the Nazi concentration camp in Wülzburg
(Bavaria) in 1942. In the 1920s he returned to his native Prague to
teach at the local conservatory. His compositions, with their blend of
traditional genres, jazz syncopations, dance rhythms and moderately
expanded tonality, were fully attuned to the tenor of the times.
This edition contains five of Schulhoff ’s piano cycles with a total
of thirty-five jazz-inflected pieces ranging from the relatively easy
Esquisses de jazz (1927) to the fairly demanding Cinq Études de jazz
(1926). This is the first Urtext edition of this music and draws on the
original prints comparing them with the surviving handwritten
sources. Errors have been corrected and distinctive traits of
Schulhoff ’s notation retained.

Schubert’s great fantasies newly engraved
Early evidence of Schubert’s interest in music of the past can be
found in his Fantasy in C minor of 1811 (D 2 E), with its echoes of
Mozart’s fantasy in the same key. A recurring motivic snippet in
the virtuosic Graz Fantasy in C major (D 605 A), probably composed
between 1818 and 1821, already foreshadows the monumental
Wanderer Fantasy of 1822 (op. 15, D 760).
Printed with spacious new engraving, BA 10862 unites Schubert’s
great fantasies for solo piano in a single volume and presents the
early work Fantasy in C minor for the first time in a scholarly-critical
Urtext edition. It offers advanced pupils, students and professional
pianists a richly varied, musically and technically thrilling addition
to their repertoire. The edition features notes on performance
practice, an informative preface, practical page turns and an elegant
engraving.

The most famous of the fantasies, the Wanderer Fantasy, now
appears in a separate edition. The dedicatee of the Wanderer Fantasy,
Emanuel Karl Count Liebenberg de Zsittin, exclaimed in despair,
“The Devil should play this stuff!” Yet it wasn’t the Devil but Liszt –
like Schumann a great admirer of the piece – who later arranged
the Wanderer Fantasy for piano and orchestra and again for two
pianos. It was also Liszt who gave the work the nickname it has
retained to the present day.

In 1903, Satie composed his famous cycle for piano duet with the
provocative and ambiguous title 3 Morceaux en forme de Poire.
(In French, poire means “pear” but also “dimwit”). It is a detached and
ironic commentary on the constraints of musical form. Now this
cycle is being published in a scholarly-critical Urtext edition for the
first time. Convenient page turns, a score format, translations of
the French expression and tempo markings, Satie’s enigmatic
introduction, performance suggestions by the Satie specialist
Steffen Schleiermacher and a detailed foreword by the renowned

Piano Concerto in C minorA fascinating insight into Mozart’s art of composition
The seal is used exclusively for
facsimile editions published

highest demands in both
scholarly and technical terms.
The distinguishing features
include:

colour printing
scholarly commentary
attractive cover design
Mozart’s Piano Concerto in
C minor K.491 is one of his
best-known works in the
genre, not least because of
the special character of its
minor key (rarely encountered
in Mozart’s music) and the
dramatic contrast between
the soloist and orchestra.
Equally unusual is the autograph
manuscript. Here Mozart made
an exception by producing
sketches that he later enlarged
and extensively revised for the
score. On the one hand this
allows us to retrace his creative
process, on the other hand in
some passages the definitive
readings are almost illegible,
especially in the piano part.

Bärenreiter is launching a new generation of Urtext editions for
Bach’s complete organ works based on the New Bach Edition (NBA)
and the New Bach Edition-Revised (NBArev). The hallmarks will be
detailed up-to-date prefaces and a newly engraved musical text
with optimum page turns. A new feature will be links to the relevant
autograph manuscripts in Bach Digital thereby ensuring quick
access to the sources. This series of new Urtext editions are
scheduled for completion in 2015 and will form the standard
benchmark for this music.
The first edition in the new series represents the revised second
printing of the New Bach Edition volume BA 5033 (Series IV: Organ

A new foreword by Christoph Wolff delves in detail into each work
included in the volume, discussing the available sources and the
current state of research. The edition draws on contemporary sources,
which are used to describe details of performance practice. Links are
provided to respective scholarly studies and the relevant autograph

Ševčík’s complete work covers every area of violin technique, from
the most elementary level and special exercises concerning individual
technical problems right through to analytical studies of the standard
concertos. Today, more than 130 years later, his “Violin School” still
numbers among the most important teaching methods for violinists.
The new edition of Ševčík’s School of Violin Technique op. 1, combines
the original four volumes into two volumes. It is essentially based on
the first edition published at the beginning of the twentieth century
along with other sources from Ševčík’s posthumous papers.
Jaroslav Foltýn, violin professor at Prague Conservatory (like Ševčík at
one time), has provided an accurate methodological commentary.
These two volumes mark the launch of a series of new Bärenreiter
publications of Ševčík’s principal works.

generations of violinists

L’Estro Armonico for two solo violins, strings and basso continuo.
Our new edition, in turn, is an arrangement of this organ concerto
and has been scored for violoncello solo, strings and basso continuo.
It was commissed for the renowned cellist Sol Gabetta who premiered

Dvořák’s String Quintet in G major op. 77, had five movements when
it was premiered on 18 March 1876. Its second movement was the
Intermezzo from his String Quartet in E minor (1870). Later Dvořák
removed this movement from the quintet, expanded it, and published
it as a separate Notturno for string orchestra op. 40. The Intermezzo is
included in its original version in the appendix of the score.
This edition is based on the Complete Edition of the Works of Antonín
Dvořák, the principal source being the first edition of 1888, for which
Dvořák subjected the work to revision.

Modest Mussorgsky:Night on Bald Mountain
for Woodwind Quintet
Arranged by Joachim Linckelmann
Score and parts
BA 8608 · approx. € 24.95
To appear in January 2014Night on Bald Mountain depicts a witches’ sabbath on St. John’s Day,
the night between 23 and 24 June. Its sections present the infernal
noise of ghostly voices, the chattering and quarreling of witches,
the appearance of ghosts, the dance of witches and demons, the
appearance of Satan, the adoration and Black Mass, and finally the
pealing bells of the village church, announcing the break of day and
thus the end of the witches’ sabbath.
Whether intentionally or not, Mussorgsky actually finished the work
on the eve of St. John’s Day (23 June 1867), after spending twelve days
on its composition.
Technically speaking, Joachim Linckelmann’s exciting version for
wind quintet is the arrangement of an arrangement, as Mussorgsky’s
symphonic poem is almost invariably heard in the familiar version by
Rimsky-Korsakov.

Mazel tov
Because the clarinet is such an important instrument in Klezmer
music, these arrangements unveil the full spectrum of the Ashkenazi-
Jewish music-making in one fell swoop. The eight pieces exemplify a
multitude of dancing and singing styles, with small ornaments and
playing techniques (e.g. bent notes, melismas and chromatic runs)
to impart the distinctive flavour of this music. The volume offers the
possibility to interpret the pieces in a variety of ways, also offering
scope for personal expression. The idiomatic piano part provides bold
bass lines, typical harmonic progressions, countermelodies, and a
considerable number of embellishments.
• All the important stylistic features of Klezmer music
• Authentic notation

Urtext edition of Smetana’s most famous work
Vltava (The Moldau) is Smetana’s most famous and frequently
performed tone poem. It was written between 20 November and
8 December 1874, but only in 1879-1880, with the completion of the
entire cycle Má vlast did it appear in print, when Urbánek issued it
in full score and a version for piano duet.
Owing to the large number of misprints in the Urbánek first edition,
Hugh Macdonald has based his new edition on the autograph score,
with cross-references to the first edition and the composer’s own
version for piano duet. Conflicting readings in the sources are listed
in the Critical Commentary along with a discussion of all editorial
decisions.

composed between 1903-1905. Debussy however refined this work
up until at least 1913. These corrections are found in a score which
Debussy gave to his wife as a present for her private library in 1913.
This source has only recently come to light and has been evaluated
for the very first time for this edition.
The editor has also drawn on several other important sources which
were previously unavailable or unknown. This scholarly-critical edition
which is based on the latest musicogical research is an absolute must
for conductors, orchestras and librarians.
• Urtext edition with countless corrections and readings which
deviate from existing editions
• Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5cm)
• Score and orchestral parts with an impeccable generous layout
• Includes an informative introduction (Eng/Fr/Ger), facsimiles,
source descriptions and a Critical Commentary (Eng)

Haydn’s Sturm und Drang symphonies along with the London and the
Paris symphonies belong to his most popular works today. The Sturm
und Drang works contain not only masterpieces such as the already
published Farewell Symphony and the Maria Theresia symphony but
also gems such as the recently published La Passione symphony (2013)
and now the Symphony in B major No. 46.
The publication of this symphony represents a continuation of the
collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company
in the areas of large vocal compositions, operas and symphonic works.
The Symphony in B major is based on the Henle Complete Edition of
the Works of Joseph Haydn and is published with a full score and
large format performing material on sale.
