THE DESIGN PARTNERSHIP LLP, Architects + Planners

is an architectural firm whose work is of exceptional

relevance to our times and is characterized by its sensi-

tive and resonant responses to local context as well as

by its innovative aesthetic approach and leading edge

technology.

8 DESIGN PORTRAITS is a selection of eight of our

medical and research projects that depict our inves-

tigation and interest in creating sanctuaries for heal-

ing while pushing technology to its limits. We strive to

create architecture that participates in all aspects of

local context and culture, as well as in the unfolding

future that recognizes architecture in its unparalleled

and timely significance.

Since its inception, now more than thirty years ago, The

Design Partnership success is due to the efforts of our

The UCSF Connie Frank Transplant Center’s design rec-

ognizes the “gift of life” and the incredible act of gen-

erosity when one donates their sacred organ to a loved

one. The Center is located on the 7th Floor of a 1960’s

Building that incorporates extraordinary views of the

Golden Gate Bridge and Downtown San Francisco. The

Center was conceived to provide comprehensive pa-

tient services for kidney transplant patient in a calm

and graceful environment.

The VA Palo Alto Campus Project is comprised of eight

unique projects that are centered on healing Veterans

and advancing medical technology. 1. The Acute Psy-

chiatric Care facility is currently under construction and

includes four inpatient nursing units, surrounding outdoor

enclosed patient gardens, an outpatient mental health

clinic, administrative offices and a utility building. The

other campus projects are with The Design Partnership

as Associate Architects, and include the following proj-

ects: 2. Polytrauma/Blind Rehab Center, 3. Ambulatory

Care Center, 4. Aquatic Center, 5. Research Labora-

tory, 6. Parking Structure, Underground Utilities, and

Healing Gardens.

The VA San Francisco Campus Project incorporates a

visionary land utilization study that expands the VASF’s

Ambulatory Care Programs on an adjacent historic

military site overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. This

study was commissioned to determine whether acquisi-

tion and development of the site would meet the pro-

jected space needs of the Medical Center projected

out to 2025. Site development scenarios were present-

ed based on our analysis of the draft SFVAMC Master

Plan, projected space needs and the constraints of the

campus.

The VA Puget Sound Campus Project is a striking addi-

tion to an existing aging hospital campus. The addition

is contextually responsive in its scale and orientation

and incorporates a new central plaza that unites the

campus’ past, present and future. The new addition is

composed of three distinct and unique projects that are

linked to Mental Health treatment and research. The

Design Partnership as Associate Architect planned and

designed the new 1. Mental Health Services and Re-

search Building, a new 2. 1,000 stall Parking Structure,

and a 3. Seismic Upgrade of the existing campus Hos-

pital that required careful and sensitive phasing of in-

terior renovation to maintain existing operations during

construction. The projects required extensive coordina-

tion with VA personnel, and considerable understand-

ing of the constraints of the existing campus facilities,

utilities and operations.

VA Monterey Ambulatory Care Center is an outstand-

ing example of the VA and Department of Defense

(DoD) collaboration that can improve quality, access,

and efficiency of health care delivery by co-locating

resources, eliminating administrative barriers, and

implementing change. The design creates a beautiful

and elegant solution that places a healing garden at its

heart. Located in one of California’s treasured settings

overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Monterey, California,

the VA DoD Ambulatory Care Center establishes a

neighborhood approach to creating community care.

The Sharp/Grossmont Campus Project comprises mul-

tiple medical projects span over 30 years and cumulat-

ing with a visionary and significant 1. hospital addition

that incorporates an Emergency Department, a Critical

Care Wing, and Progressive Care Units to the existing

facility at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Cali-

fornia. This five-story, 167,000 square foot addition

blends several new concepts in emergency medicine,

including: computerized patient tracking and chart-

ing, integrated system-wide information systems, and

flexible design. The addition replaces functions in the

existing facility, providing space for new services and

meeting seismic requirements. The other unique Proj-

ects include: 2. Emergency Generator, 3. Central Plant

Expansion, 4. Cancer Center, 5. Site Development, 6.

Entry Lobby, 7. Parking Structure, 8. Physical Rehab, 9.

Mental Health, and 10. Women’s Center.

Hybrid Operating Room Projects: The Design Partner-

ship utilizes virtual environments as a visual and inno-

vative tool to assist clinical teams in evaluating equip-

ment positioning and sight lines, and to determine the

combination of modalities that can work successfully

together as the basis of design for the new prototype

Hybrid OR. 1. We replaced the existing Cath Lab Suite

at Stanford University’s Hospital with a new state-of-

the-art hybrid interventional radiology/neurosurgical

operating room and a new Pediatric Cath Lab 2. Our

new design of the Robotic Center OR at UCSF’s Mt.

Zion Campus incorporates the new “state of the art”

DaVinci Robotic Surgical System that advances innova-

tive clinical procedures while expanding UCSF’s patient

capacity.

Technology & Architecture: The Design Partnership is

committed to incorporating advanced technology in

all our projects. Building information modeling (BIM)

allows us to: 1. Use virtual reality during the design

phase to test sight lines and eliminate obstructions, 2.

Explore massing studies to review site implications, so-

lar orientation and grading, 3. Coordinate building In-

frastructure, 4. Provide material quantities to generate

more accurate cost estimates, 5. Integrate with LEED

software to track sustainable features and credits, and

6. By combining BIM with 3-D laser scans of existing

building conditions we are able to design removals and

installations of the building infrastructure to ¼” preci-

sion. Using these techniques, one of our recent projects

came in 37% under the budget and two months ahead

of schedule. The Design Partnership was recently hon-

ored by the AIA San Francisco for “Integrated Project

Delivery” for unifying collaborative design technolo-

gies with construction and direct 3-D fabrication tech-

nology. This merger of technology sets the stage for a

highly collaborative relationship between the Architect,

the Contractor, and the Owner.
