7th May 2015 Principal’s Desk Great Email I received this email from a new parent today and I would like to share it with you all. It is about one of our students who deserves recognition for what he did and I think it says a lot about the type of students we have here. Well done Victor Warren! Dear Mr Jones I am a new parent to the school and wish to give high appraisal to one of your students who stopped to assist me after school yesterday with my prep child's broken bike. As I was leaving the school grounds carrying the kid’s bike, twin boys scooted past me. One of them came back and asked me, "I can help fix the chain" as he noticed the chain had come completely off my daughter's bike. I told him I had tried and it was very difficult. He then proceeded to turn the bike upside down and within a minute fixed my daughters bike:)) - she was so elated, and I was amazed! (because I tried myself unsuccessfully that morning when we came into school late and had to walk half way to school) Before he left I asked his name, he told me it was Victor. I thought what he did for another student whom he didn't know was brilliant! What a sweet and perceptive boy… I hope my kids grow up to be respectful, generous and show initiative like this student of yours. I thought you would like to know this about your student, because his actions are deserving of recognition, such as at the Whole school assembly tomorrow:) Newsletter Email There have been some parents who have registered to our newsletter subscription list but have not been receiving our newsletter alerts. The matter will require a detailed traffic study by Council’s Traffic and Transport Planning unit. 7 ways to help you be on top of your parenting game

Effective parents equip their children with the skills, know-how and values they need to stay safe and be successful. These seven ideas will help make sure your parenting reflects the times in which we live. Everyone wants to be the best parent they can be, yet it can be confusing knowing just what to focus on. Here are seven ideas that reflect current trends and needs and will help you be on top of your parenting game: 1. Give the gift of restraint. At a time when kids receive so much it’s easy to forget that restraint is a virtue. Just because you can afford to give children and young people what they want, doesn’t mean you should. Differentiate between a want and a need, and encourage restraint, goal setting and saving. 2. Build your developmental knowledge. Lucky you have two eyes, as you need to keep one parenting eye on meeting kids’ current needs and the other on preparing them for the next stage of development. If starting or leaving secondary school is a year away then start thinking now about how you can make sure your child or young person is ready for the next phase of their life. 3. Reinforce self-regulation. “You waited your turn! Great stuff!” “Thanks for packing away the toys without being told.” “Good on you for staying in bed when you woke up rather than coming to our bedroom and wakingus up. ” A child’s ability to self-regulate behaviour (like the ability to self-soothe and self-occupy) is highly underrated, and doesn’t come naturally to all kids. That’s where consistent parenting using visual management and behavioural consequences comes in. 4. Practise digital parenting. The most tech-savvy generation ever raised needs digitally-aware parents. The internet is fun and it’s here to stay, but it can pose risks for some kids. Digital parenting means providing guidelines for safety without limiting children’s opportunity to learn and communicate in the online world. It also requires you to understand the digital world that your kids inhabit. 5. Develop character strengths in kids. Recent studies (most notably the work of US-based Angela Duckworth) have found that character, not cognitive ability, is the single most reliable determinant of how a person’s life will turn out. The traits associated with success include the inclination to persist at boring or difficult tasks (grit), the ability to delay gratification (self-control) and the ability to follow through with a plan (conscientiousness). 6. Practise reciprocity. The best families, like the most meaningful communities, are built around the principle of reciprocity. “We help each other out and we treat each other fairly” builds belonging and forges greater kinship between siblings. Start by getting kids of all ages to help out at home without being paid. 7. Encourage social risktaking. One in three children are risk-adverse when it comes to meeting new people and entering new social situations. Social media removes risk for these kids, yet it’s not the answer. Use a variety of strategies ranging from scaffolding (baby steps), practising meeting and speaking to new friends and modelling social risk taking yourself to encourage kids to continually refresh their social networks. Pick one or two of these ideas, or your own parenting idea, to focus on over a month. Once you’ve mastered one idea then move on to another, so that you are constantly improving and being up-to-date as a parent. Ken Jones Principal

“Helping Hand Bags”: By now, you would have heard about "Helpjng Hand Bags" either through the newsletter or at the last two Friday assemblies. Just to let you know there is one of each of the bags displayed (plus another 9 that are not on display) ready to purchase at the office, of course, if necessary the display bag can also be purchased. There is also a water bottle carrier bag on display now as well. They do make a terrific and useful gift, not only for Mother's Day, but for that birthday that sneaks up on you when you're not looking - a lot of my customers buy a bag to have in their gift cupboard for that very reason, plus its never to early to start thinking about your Christmas list! The bags will be displayed in the office for another couple of weeks with my business cards, so I can be contacted at any time. The cost of each bag is $35 & I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported their school by purchasing a bag, I know it will be enjoyed & the children at Bonbeach Primary with additional needs will reap the benefits! Thanks again, Robyn Martin"

The Mongolian people have a strong musical heritage. They even claim they ‘brought music to the world’. In Grade 3/4 we made Mongolian Rattles which are percussion in-struments used to imitate the sounds of nature.

As the weather is getting colder. Please remind your children to bring their coats/jumpers to after school care, as we still play outside when it's cold. If your child is booked in to after school care and for whatever reason you decide that they will not be attending on that day, please call and let our team know. If you need care and have not booked into Camp Australia directly, you can just come in the morning and we will add your child to the roster. If care is needed for the afternoon, just give us a call and we will add your child to our roster. We are here to help and support you. Sheila Whyte Coordinator 0450776926

Once a week, take a peek!

Families please check your child’s hair for Head Lice each Sunday before they return to school. Please treat immediately if an infestation is found. The incidence of head lice would reduce significantly if this quick check was undertaken weekly.
