Howard Three in One Today is the day on which, tradionally, hapless Curates are given the thankless task of preaching on one of the most difficult aspects of our faith—the Trinity. Sadly, we dont have a Curate on whom I can drop this task, but we have someone else who may know what they are talking about…. The Trinity, though, is an aspect of our understanding of God which has caused great confusion. It has led Muslims to suggest that we worship three gods, and is so difficult to understand that it is virtually impossible to talk about without comming heresy! It is, as one of my tutors during ordinaon training was very fond of saying, a mystery. By which we mean that nobody actually understands the nature of God, but the Trinity is our best effort at pung into one place all the bits we think we know about God. You wont find the Trinity expressed as such in the Bible, but it is a composite picture of God drawn from across the pages of Scripture. Theologians have tried for hundreds of years to understand the nature of God—aſter all, if we are created in Gods image’, then knowing Gods nature will beer help us to understand our own. However, it is an impossible task this side of eternity. As St Paul put it, Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflecons in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is paral and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. I Corinthians 13:12 (NLT) It can be frustrang that we do not, cannot, really know God, but it is hardly surprising, as we are created in Gods image, not God in ours, and God is very different, My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. Isaiah 55:8 So on Trinity Sunday, as on every other day of our short sojourn on earth, we must be sasfied that although we do not fully know God, God fully knows us. And loves us so much, He was prepared to die for us. Alleluia!
