Taking Command... Given a bit of a breather following his outstandingeffort in the Belmont, Ten Most Wanted resurfaced inthe GII Swaps S. at Hollywood Park July 13. Over atrack that was carrying inside speed the whole after-noon, the GII Illinois Derby winner challenged four wideinto the lane and poked a head in front at the stretchcall, but was outgamed by the pacesetting During (Cherokee Run) and settled for second. Trainer WallyDollase made the decision to add blinkers following theSwaps and the colt proceeded to fire three bullet worksin as many weeks at Santa Anita, which had him sittingon go for the return to New York.

How The Race Was Won... Ten Most Wanted broke inward and brushed withPeace Rules (Jules), who was sent off the post-time

favorite at odds of $2.30-1.After bumping with longshotCongrats (A.P. Indy) enteringthe clubhouse turn, the darkbay settled into a nice gallopbeneath jockey Pat Day asPeace Rules continued to slugit out on the front end withGII Jim Dandy S. winnerStrong Hope (Grand Slam).

Angled out leaving the three-eighths pole, Ten MostWanted forged to the front at the head of the lane, dueled with the Bobby Frankel trainee to the eighth polebefore pulling away to win easily. “He’s an awesomelooking horse and looks so much like his sire. Both gotit together mentally at this time of the year,” com-mented winning trainer Wally Dollase, who became onlythe second in history to train both sire and son to vic-tory in the Travers. “I didn’t think he would win thateasily. It’s a real thrill to have an animal like him. I’mreally privileged.” Dollase indicated that he is inclined toleave the winner with his peers for now. Frankel wasnot disappointed in the effort of the runner-up. “He ranhis race. He was game,” he said

Those weren’t bowling shoes he was wearing. Ten-pins, sent off the even-money favorite, was sporting hisrunning shoes yesterday. The five-year-old grabbed thelead at the half-mile pole and held off all challengers towin by a length over Aeneas. “We started pointing forthis race at the beginning of the year,” trainer DonWinfree said. “The timing was right--it’s five weeksbefore the Hawthorne Gold Cup [GII, Sept. 28]. I don’tlike to run him a lot because he puts so much into hisraces.” The Michigan-bred certainly gave it all he hadhere. Quick from the starting gate, he dogged 10-1shot Private Lap (Private Terms) through the early frac-tions. The crowd’s choice put a head in front after ahalf in :48.07, but he had to fight off first Jersey Giant, then Aeneas, before edging clear in the final strides.According to jockey Robby Albarado, the margin ofvictory could have been more. “When he gets out thereby himself, he kind of waits for horses,” Albarado said.“That’s why he never wins by too much.” The Iselinwas Tenpins’ fifth career stakes victory. The eye-catch-ing chestnut took the GIII W.D. Schaefer H., GII Wash-ington Park H. and GII Fayette S. last season. Afterrunning fourth in the GII Clark H. to end the campaign, the Joseph Vitello homebred was given a break, thenhad his return delayed by a bruised foot. A Debut Fit For A King... King’s Best (Kingmambo) made a nice impression atyesterday’s opening session, with seven sold from ninethrough the ring for an average of just over i175,000.John Ferguson signed the tickets on two of the Darleystallion’s colts, including yesterday’s second highest-priced offering. Hip 18, consigned by Haras d’Etreham,is out of the Listed stakes winner Manureva (Nureyev),making the colt a half brother to GI Atto Mile winnerRiviera (Fr) (Kris {GB}). He sold for i450,000. “We arehappy with what we got,” commented Harasd’Etreham’s Marc de Chambure, who sold both topcolts. “The Sadler's Wells sold for a million dollars andeverytime you sell a horse for that kind of money youhave to be happy. He was a good looking animal withthe right pedigree. The King's Best also sold well. Hecomes from a good family, had a good conformationand can certainly be a top racehorse." Robert Nataf ofHorse France also went to i450,000 for hip 56, a coltby Anabaa out of Supergirl (Woodman), making him ahalf brother to this year's G1 French Derby runner-upSuper Celebre (Fr). Nataf signed the ticket for an undis-closed client, but was next to trainer Elie Lellouche, thementor of Super Celebre, during the bidding and thereis strong speculation that Alec Wildenstein, owner ofSuper Celebre, is back buying yearlings.

Nataf Stays Busy... Nataf added to his coffers when he went toi420,000 for a filly by leading freshman sire Fasliyev.Hip 54, consigned to the sale by Haras de laReboursiere et de Montaigu, is out of Style for Life (Ire)(Law Society), the dam of Group 1 winner Night Style(Fr) and stakes winner and group-placed Maid ofDawkins (Ire). "The filly has been bought for Mr. JavierGispert and, like some of his previous purchases, shewill be trained in the Southwest of France at Pau byFrancois Rohaut,” Nataf explained. “She was the mostbeautiful filly in the sale, from a great family and, beingby the new sensation sire Fasliyev, you must be pre-pared to pay some money.

What They’re Saying At The Sales...

Deauville August cont.

Day One By The Numbers... While the clearance rate rose to 75.5 percent from 64percent a year ago, gross receipts totaledi7,036,000, down by 15.5 percent, and the averagewas off by 10 percent at i175,900. Much of the dis-parity in the figures is attributable to last year’s overallsales topper. "We have a slight decrease, but we had afew top prospects taken out and we didn't have a i2-million horse in the sale tonight,” commented PhilippeAugier, general manager of Agence Francaise. “There-fore we are quite hopeful that by tomorrow night wewill have filled the gap and be able to show an increasecompared to last year's first two days."

Anthony Stroud, BBA England (bought the top colt): “I feel that it is a big mistake that there was no realtop racing at Deauville on the weekend of the sale. Itwould have been better with the running of a race likethe Le Marois or Prix Morny. It definitely attracts morepeople."

Martine Head, Haras du Quesnay, who bought thesecond highest priced filly: "Personally, beside managing Haras du Quesnay, I amdeveloping a new activity as a bloodstock agent underthe name Quesnay Bloodstock and this filly is my firstever purchase. She is a lovely looking filly and it iswonderful to be able to access such a top family. Shesold for exactly the same price as her full sister lastyear, so it shows that there is no inflation in the mar-ket. I can't yet say who I bought her for.She will be trained in France, but it has not yet beendecided by who.” She added, “I am quite disappointedat the outcome of this first day. There were some verynice horses that didn't sell as well as you could expectand colts are selling better than fillies. It is disappoint-ing compared to the overall quality on offer."

LEATHERBURY SADDLES 6,000TH WINNERKing Leatherbury made history yesterday atTimonium, becoming just the third trainer to hit the6,000-win plateau. The mark was reached whenCherokee Sunrise (Cherokee Run), a two-year-oldrunner making his third career start, romped by 4 1/4lengths to break his maiden in the seventh race. “We’ve been waiting for this so long,” said theLeatherbury, who took out his trainer’s license in1958 during the Eisenhower administration. “It wasvery exciting to see [Cherokee Sunrise] make hismove at the head of the stretch, because it wasobvious we were going to win. It was exciting, butwe thought we’d be doing this three weeks ago. Wejust couldn’t win a race at Laurel [Leatherbury went 0-26 at the summer meet] and it got very frustrat-ing.” When asked about the staggering number ofvictories he’s accrued, the 70-year-old added mod-estly, “I don’t know how it happened. The wins justadded up over the years. It is amazing to think thatonly two trainers in history have won more races. Iam honored to be in their company.” Leatherburynow sits behind Dale Baird (8,819 wins) and JackVan Berg (6,334) on the all-time wins list.

The Mark Johnston-trainedfilly, who rattled up impressive successes in the G3Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot June 18 and G2Cherry Hinton S. at Newmarket July 8, is recoveringfrom an over-reach and will now be aimed at the G1Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket Oct. 2. “Unfortu-nately, one of two little things didn’t go quite rightfor Attraction during last week and she sustained anover-reach,” Johnston told the Racing Post yester-day. “It’s not serious by any means, but she’ll beunable to run in the Prix Morny next weekend aswe’d originally hoped. There’s little else for her be-tween now and the Cheveley Park, so she’ll betrained with that in mind.”

KIN ARC BOUND This year’s G1 Epsom Derby win-ner Kris Kin (Kris S.) will be aimed at the G1 Prix del’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Oct. 5, it was an-nounced yesterday. I’m not quite sure wherethat will be, whether in France or in England. I would betempted to go to France, as we did that with Golan.”

First Charter came through this extreme test of stam-ina and resilience to follow up his success in this con-test 12 months ago. In scenes reminiscent of thatperformance, First Charter was settled off a true gallopset this time by Scott’s View before reeling in that rivalin the straight. Taking command with 1½ furlongsremaining, he was pushed out to assert from the gamelong-time leader. First Charter, described as “solid” byhis conditioner Sir Michael Stoute, earned that tag by aseries of what Stoute termed “ very honest and consis-tent” performances last year.
