The Showcase Exhibition in the beautifully landscaped grounds of The Bield will include examples of work from many of this year’s participating artists, providing a ‘taster’ of the impressive range of Art and Craft work to be seen in the artists’ own venues. Six ‘artists in residence’ will welcome visitors and will be delighted to answer questions about their work and the Exhibition will include the work of our Featured Artist for this year: award winning Photographer Simon Jauncey.

Simon has been a photographer for 30 years in the UK and overseas. He lived for 10 years in Venezuela where he shot cars for Ford, whisky for Johnnie Walker, food for Kraft and many other advertising commissions. Returning to his native Perthshire Simon has photographed many of Scotland’s great houses, castles and their occupants for guide books & magazines, notably Country Life Magazine and Hello!

With a background in complex advertising imagery & special effects, his personal work has now come full circle, with a return to straightforward portraiture, candid observation & simple, unmanipulated landscapes.

Directions: Head West from the Perth bypass on to the A85 signposted to Crieff (Look out for yellow AA signs for POS). Turn Left at the crossroads to Madderty/Tibbermore. The Bield Entrance is half a mile ahead on the left. Follow the signs for parking.

The elegant River Room overlooking the Tummel River is the setting for a second, ‘taster’ Exhibition of our artists’ work. This is another opportunity to see original art work, and to pick up a copy of our brochure as a guide to decide which venues to visit to see artists in their own studios and workshops. Plan a day out; enjoy a meal in the Theatre restaurant; perhaps see a show and view the work of some of Perthshire and Kinross-Shire’s finest artists.

WELCOMETO PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS 2019This annual nine day event has become a fixture in the cultural calendar of Perthshire and Kinross-shire, presenting this year 141 venues and the work of over 200 artists for the public to view and enjoy. Artists and craft makers are displaying their paintings, jewellery, photography, ceramics and much more, in studios, homes, workshops, galleries, halls and churches across this stunning part of Scotland.

Whether this is your first visit, or you are a regular visitor, you will meet artists who have joined us for the first time and some who have been part of the event since its inception in 2008. You can be assured of a warm welcome from everyone and you will have the opportunity to see and purchase original works of art from the artists who created them.

Where to start, with so much choice and perhaps limited time to spend travelling around? Our Showcase Exhibitions (details on page opposite) at The Bield and a smaller one at The Pitlochry Festival Theatre provide a ‘taster’ with examples of the work on offer. Our brochure provides a directory and maps from which you can locate artists or types of art and craft work as well as recommended places to eat as you travel round and you will find an index of mediums on our website perthshireopenstudios.com

New for 2019 is our partnership with Doors Open Days (Perth and Kinross), where some participating Doors Open Days venues are featuring a POS Artist in Residence, celebrating the synergy between art and architecture and highlighting its history over the centuries in this area of outstanding Natural beauty.

Many hours of creative activity, as well as in many cases, years of developing skills and techniques, have gone into the work you will see. Your visit and your appreciation will make all of that worthwhile.

David McGovern is a professional stone-carver working mainly in his local sandstone, but also in limestone and bronze.

Outdoor willow weaving, stone carving or pottery demonstrations all week, as weather and time allows. Drop in for pottery workshops 10am-noon and 2-4pm the first weekend and raku firing demonstrations by Christine Flynn, the same time the second weekend. artist, for this year’s Perthshire Open Studios. Predominantly soft pastels, her paintings depict the character

and soul of the animals.

Painting demonstrations by Michelle will take place at the distillery on 11, 14 and 15 September from 12 noon to 3pm, with acomplimentary glass of gin

I create intricate miniature wildlife figures, using coloured glass rods sculpted and fused in a propane/oxygen flame. The technique is known as lampwork. The flame is around 1000 degrees but is very fine, which allows me to work in very tiny details to each piece, which is then mounted on agate or sometimes stone. There’s no paint involved, it’s all glass!

I specialize in soft ground limited edition etchings. I create the prints by drawing through wax coating a metal plate. I then make impressions of feathers, leather, lace, leaves and grasses in soft wax; layering the textures and tones until the picture is complete. The plate is immersed in nitric acid which etches the image details into the metal surface. The plates are inked and printed by hand.

My sister Rachel can now be found in her own studio in Errol.

Trained at Glasgow School of Art, she is particularly well known for work inspired by the movement and elegance of equestrian and feline subjects, and delights in the Scottish landscape. Some of her major allegorical pieces have drawn on the historic connections between Scotland and Hong Kong, Africa, the Caribbean and USA. Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK, USA and the Middle East.
