6th Grade Culture Culture Culture FeastFeastFeast
On Friday, January 31, 2020, our 6th Grade scholars held their annual Culture Feast. Mrs. Garcia has held the Culture Feast for the past three years to conclude the class’ study of Europe. The scholars pick a European country to research then provide information on the five fields of Social Studies — Government, Culture, Economics, History, and Geography. Scholars present their research by donning costumes and food native to their assigned countries, as well as presenting their findings to parents, staff, and scholars from other grade levels.

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th day! Kindergarteners celebrated the 100th
day of school dressed as 100-year-
olds. They hobbled and hopped their
way through the day counting, eating,
and building all things 100!

First Grade’s annual “Super Bowl of Reading” is always a fun celebration for our scholars, and this year was no exception! They enjoyed wearing shirts representing their favorite teams, playing sight word touchdown, discussing good sportsmanship, and working as a team to achieve goals.
Our Jaguars ate a delicious “tailgate” lunch in the classroom in honor of all scholars scoring successfully in the Accelerated Reading program, and at the end of the day they “huddled up” to read with their parents.
Our day was FUNtastic!

Ten Minutes with…
Mr. Wedgeworth
By: Fischer Brown and Luis Miguel Sanchez Marta
This month, we decided to visit with the Middle
School Science teacher, Ralph Wedgeworth.
Fischer and Luis Miguel: What is your favorite
part about teaching at St. James? Mr.
Wedgeworth: The parents are great, the
values we instill, and the importance of the
education for the scholars. What was your
favorite subject in school? I really enjoyed the
challenges of Physical Education — there is
always a way to improve myself. If you weren’t
a teacher, what else would you want to do?
I think I would be a game warden. Have you
taught at any other schools? I started teaching
in 1979; I taught for four years in Arkansas,
five years in Port Lavaca, four years in
Ingleside. I then taught at King High School
before joining the faculty here at St. James.
What is your favorite sport? I love football — I
changed jobs specifically so that I could
coach football. If you had to teach any other
subject, what would you teach? I think it would
be fun to teach a Logic class. Where did you
attend college? I graduated from the
University of Arkansas at Monticello. Have
you lived in any other states or countries? I was
born and raised in Arkansas; I lived there
before I moved to Texas in 1983. What is your
favorite thing to teach in Science? I really enjoy
teaching circuits — series and parallel
circuitry. What are your hobbies? I enjoy
paddle boarding, golfing, and writing.

Spotlight

This month, I decided to interview Aidan Locke, an SJES alumni from the class of 2017.
Aidan currently attends Flour Bluff High School as a junior. Gavin: Did St. James prepare
you for high school? Aidan: Yes — the teachers really prepared me in Math, Science,
and English… they all helped me a lot. Are you still in touch with your friends from St.
James? Not really, sadly… but I know that they are there. Who was your favorite
teacher at St. James? Wow… that is REALLY hard. All of my teachers there are great.
What was your favorite subject? Probably History — I really enjoy learning all of the
stories — it’s like reading a book. Do you still use anything that you learned at St.
James? Absolutely! I still use things from St. James almost daily in every subject.
What was the most important thing that you learned at St. James? Probably how to write
expository essays — how to write in general. Is St. James better than Flour Bluff?
Absolutely! There is no comparison at all. What makes St. James better? The
teachers at St. James really cared about us — they want to teach us… the small
class size allows for us to really connect with our teachers. What hobbies do you
enjoy? I like to kayak, read, and play Air Soft.
