BASKETBALL
Year 7 Red Basketball CBC 27 defeated Tenison Tigers Navy 26
It was a close game throughout, both teams eager to win. Fortunately CBC managed to shoot the winning goals in the last minutes of the game. Team members included Nick Botsos, James Caldwell, Dylan Heinrich, Peter Jackson, Anthony Sosa, Lachlan Coles, Isaac Rosewarne and Henry Humphries. Goal shooters were Dylan, Anthony, Isaac, Nick, Lachlan and James. Thanks go to those parents who willingly transported other students to the game and cheered from the sidelines.
Ms Kay OliphantCoach
Year 4/5 Red BasketballCBC 42 defeated WPPS Warriors 14 (30 Oct)
The team played an excellent game against, with all due respect, an opposition that was lower in quality compared to the previous week, but did battle it out the entire contest. Offensively, we had some excellent ball movement and swift passing, resulting in some great assists and easy baskets close to the hoop. Defensively, we found a great balance between pressuring the ball carrier and defending the basket, making it difficult for our opponents to score freely. It was a even contribution with all playing well.
Best Players: Adam, Joel, Oscar

CRICKET
First XI CricketCBC 5/236 defeated Trinity 9/152
Best Batting: Jack Bastin 63, Zane Caldwell 68 n.o., Corey Saurewald 40, Wil Mariuz 20
Best Bowling: Sam McGrath 2/14, Oliver Alyanak 2/21, Frederick Oliver 2/40, Zane Caldwell 1/21
This was our best performance for the year enhanced by a fine opening stand of 58 from Wil Mariuz and Jack Bastin. We scored freely and after 20 overs were 1 for 119. A rock solid 4th wicket partnership of 104 by Zane Caldwell and Corey Sauerwald was outstanding. The batting was a pleasure to watch with free flowing shots to all parts of the ground. Three huge sixes were hit -- two by Jack Bastin and one by Zane Caldwell. The bowling still needs plenty of work with 29 unsatisfactory wides bowled. Fortunately, both Zane Caldwell and Oliver Alyanak bowled extremely well to contain the scoring and pick up three valuable wickets.
This week we are away at Pulteney.
Mr Michael ButtfieldCoach
Year 8 CricketAdelaide High 6/151 defeated CBC 6/92 Adelaide High won by 59 runs
We took to the field with a full team today – hallelujah! Unfortunately, completeness did not promote another victory. Occasionally, one must concede that the other side is simply better: such was the case with Adelaide High.
We gave our visitors first use of the wicket on a fiercely cold and windy morning. Our opening bowlers, D’Arcy Rabbitt (1/20 off 4) and Brayden Allerby (1/25 off 6), deserve credit for controlling the ball fairly well in the swirling conditions. Actually, there was surprisingly little swing.

21 Ways of Looking at a CandleYear 10 English Students – A Collective Meditation on a Candle
The flame burns neatlyInside the dusty waxAs if fire was digesting dirtThen it was just the sameAs any other candleOrange flameBlackening wickPooling wax
Showing the harrowing death of a life to come Bright as so many futures Tears down her face
The flame depletes the waxSlowly yet imminently As humanity does to the world
The constant burning of the flameRaging Wax meltingThe heat of the blazeSlowly releasing the presence of GodAnd fire burns on
Light shines bright whiteKids peep with admiration
The boy in the corner came in to the lightAnd sat downNo words were spokenBut everyone knew what they were saying
A candle flameGlows softlyIn the dark roomGiving offThe elegant lightOf GodA point of connectionOf beliefs to realityUndisturbed of distractionsThe waxSlowly melts awayLike the sinsOf our past
A small flameLights up the whole roomJust as one manCan influenceA world
A presence is with us A fire on a campShowing us somethingThat hasn’t been done before
Light living inside the dark
The blossoming light of the small fireCaught in the trap of dry waxDesperately trying to set itself free
Comforted and warmed We gather around the flame
Hearth at the centreA flame of tranquillity
Wrapped in a blanketNext to the flame
A mixtureSad and joyful
Ignition of comfort and pain
Dancing softly on the wick
In the shadows of darknessThe light flickers
Cheering with light a candle
Rethinking thoughts in quietness
The air that it breathesThe heat from the light
Blow out the candleLet it go they sayWatch the smoke dance up in the airAnd the flames leave With a simple dance
Adelaide’s first few batsmen were of high quality and they punished anything that was a trifle short or over-pitched; several of our ten bowlers supplied a few such offerings.
Allerby drew first blood in his 3rd over, with the sore on 21: a good-length ball, just outside off-stump, took off and found the edge of the bat. Harry Chillingworth, standing up to the stumps, held a splendid catch, high to his right. We reaped no further success until the score had reached 100 in the 17th over, by which time Adelaide were away.
Matthew Cerone (1/3 off 2) and William Reid (0/3 off 2) were both economical. Alwin Siby also took a wicket, as did Montazer Syed; Hunter Dwyer 2/16 off 2), much improved this week, was the only one to claim 2 wickets.
Adelaide High sailed on merrily to reach 151 for the loss of 6 wickets, a rate of a run a ball. They were a good team, but CBC’s fielding was heroic. Every catch was taken – all of our 6 wickets fell to that mode of dismissal. Apart from Chillingworth’s ‘screamer’, Reid judged a very awkward ball, right on the boundary, while looking directly into the sun. He also held a sharp slip catch, and Syed, Cerone and Siby each accepted chances that were eminently droppable. The ground fielding was nigh faultless, with Mackenzie Forbes excelling.
Realistically, we were unlikely to reach such a target, and we soon fell behind the required rate. Chillingworth departed early and then Reid was slightly unfortunate when, in an attempt to accelerate, he attempted what looked like a viable short single, only to be beaten by an alert fieldsman who hit directly the only stump visible.
As part of our inclusivity policy, we packed the top six of the order with the four players who had not batted last week. This meant that a few of our stronger players did not visit the crease (they will do so, of course, next week); this will have reduced our scoring potential somewhat, but I do not think that victory was attainable today, whatsoever the order. Three of the promoted batsmen, Syed, Dwyer and Ayush Gadhvi, each survived for several overs and reached double figures. Certainly, they retain technical blemishes, but they tackled the task bravely, contributed to their team, and the experience will have given them confidence. In the modern game, bowlers must also be able to bat.
Rabbitt, our strongest batsman, arrived at the crease with a few overs remaining and immediately launched an assault, striking 6 handsome boundaries (well, maybe one or two were not handsome!). He scored a rapid 28*. We finished on 6 for 92, 59 runs adrift.
In the afternoon, it was a pleasure to watch the prominent Year 8 players from a couple of years ago, scoring runs and taking wickets for the 1st XI in an exciting victory over Trinity College. The current Year 8s should aspire to emulate their predecessors in the years ahead.
My thanks to Mr Forbes for scoring today.

TENNIS
Drive TennisCBC 6 sets defeated Scotch College 3 sets (Rnd 12, 4 Nov)
This was perhaps our most comprehensive win of the year. All players performed to their best and we were far too strong for our opponents. As a team we are looking sharper, hungrier and calmer in the heat of battle.
Highlights: Four of our singles players recorded 6-0 wins
• Pierce Hynes 6-0: Bamboozled his opponent with smart clay court tennis. Hitting very confidently and with added precision and pace.
• Morgan Edey 6-0: Overpowered, hit out and found the lines. Backhand and forehand working beautifully.
• Matt Pinyon 6-0: Played a very solid game from the back, making few errors.
• Joe Farina 6-0: This was a master class in shot selection and change of pace. Great effort.
• Nick Davies 6-2: Nick continues to compete at this level and is now finding his confidence.
Two other great doubles wins from Hynes/Edey 6-4 and Farina/Davies 6-2 rounded off a great morning’s tennis. Special thanks to Simon Bates for his coaching advice and support for the team.
Mr Paul HorganCoach
Middle A2 TennisCBC 7 sets (47 games) defeated Scotch College 2 sets (27 games)
Convincing victories in the doubles placed the team in a strong position leading into the singles.
Brodie Winter/Patrick Hogan (6-1) and Kris Pantelios/Gianluca Feltrin (6-2) played superbly and completely shut down their opponents. On the other hand, Ricky Nyugen and Donatus Pannunzio (6-4) fought back from 0-3, before they found their rhythm and powered home with some stunning shots.
The momentum continued in the singles with Winter (6-1), Nguyen (6-1), Feltrin (6-2) and Pannunzio (6-4) securing the rubber and handing the team an excellent win. Hogan was unlucky against his opponent going down (4-6) whilst Pantelios (1-6) couldn’t find his usual touch. Nevertheless, both players were gallant in defeat. Overall, it was a solid team performance.

VOLLEYBALL
Open VolleyballCBC Open B 3 sets defeated St Peter’s College Nil
CBC Open C 3 sets defeated St Peter’s College Nil
Just when we thought flu season was over, the ‘lurgi’ hit again and both volleyball coaches were absent from the games on Friday. However, never fear, Mr Lucas is here…and thanks to the support of ‘stand in’ coaches – the games were able to go ahead. And what a job they did! Both teams really played and made light work of the St Peter’s teams. Both games were close in the first set, but then CBC pulled away and both teams had convincing wins! Well done, boys!
Ms Debra WithersCoach
Middle C VolleyballBlackfriars Priory 2 sets defeated CBC Nil
In a 5.15pm late game at Blackfriars Gym the Middle C team played two very competitive sets against an accurate and dogged opponent. Our team consisted of Nico Vidal, Matt Zarna who served extremely well, Owen Anderson and Mitchell Killmier who both featured in strong team play, Hudson Lewis, Eric Phan, Louie Lockwood and Samuel Sentschuk who all gave a tremendous effort in setting up the play in the face of strong serving by Blackfriars.
There were some fantastic points contested by the two teams with all players showing great skill and determination in scurrying to make shots.
In the end Blackfriars were too consistent for us and won both of the games that time permitted.
This week we are at home to St Paul’s in a late game at 5pm in the CBC Gym.

WATER POLO
Open B Water PoloRostrevor 7 defeated CBC 3
The current senior team was due to play Rostrevor College as they concluded their 2017 season. With a number of players unable to attend due to exam study commitments, the pressure was on to field a team. With seconds to go before the starting time for the first quarter, Laurence arrived with a couple of fill-in players, James Ridgewell and Lewis Cockram. We had a team. Marcello could start to relax.
Rostrevor got the upper hand scoring 2 goals in the first quarter. CBC met the challenges, with Haydn doing a superb job in goals. Many strong attacks were stopped and the ball returned to the CBC forwards. Liam, Lachlan and Marcello worked well together feeding the ball up the left side of the pool, then across to centre for an attempt at scoring. Marcello produced the first goal for CBC before the quarter finished.
Both teams sent the ball back and forward, with good blocks and strong attempts to add to the score. CBC and Rostrevor held each other at a goal apiece for the second quarter.
Lewis and James were regular interchanges, learning about the stamina in playing water polo. Unfortunately, with some key players missing, Rostrevor moved ahead with 2 goals in both the third and fourth quarters.
Marcello addressed their lead with a goal in the fourth quarter, to leave the final score at CBC 3 and Rostrevor 7.
The game was hard but well fought out from both teams. A few questionable umpiring decisions against Laurence didn’t help the continuity of various game plays. The sportsmanship from the CBC players and the pride in knowing they played very well was worth watching, and a quality finish to the season.
Mr Peter DonnellyCoach
Middle Water PoloBlackfriars Priory 26 defeated CBC 2
Goal Scorers: Andre Riccardi, Liam Potter
This was an extremely tough match for our team with the majority of our players new to water polo. We were up against a seasoned Blacks team who dominated from the outset. Our boys fought hard throughout the game and rallied to score our only goals of the match in the last quarter.
Max Tyler was our most consistent player repelling many attacks whilst consistently moving the ball forward. Callum Moran made excellent position in attack but we found it very difficult to deliver any decent passes to him. Damien Rakocevic was tenacious in the first half constantly winning the contested possession and when he moved to goal keeper in the second half he displayed excellent skills in the position. Liam and Andre both scored their maiden water polo goals. They fought hard throughout the match and will learn from this tough encounter. Jonathon Clements found the going difficult after quarter time, but he continued to give his all and was at the point of exhaustion by the end of the match.
The boys will learn from this game and with the return of a couple of players who had to play in the Senior team we can look forward to a more positive result next week. It was a credit to all of the players how they never gave up the cause.
