Have a Spooktactular October!

Welcome back to another school year! We have had a wonderful start to the year in

gym. It has been great to see all of the eager faces and to meet many new students.

We are looking forward to a very active year in physical education. Our recess leader

program has already begun We appreciate all of the grade 6 volunteers who will give up

some of their time to run recess games for our students this year.

To start the year we have been building relationships through low organized games and

fitness activities. We have been focusing on safety through fun games that have really

got our students moving.

We have many extra-curricular activities being offered this year. Our grade 5/6

soccer teams are currently practicing and will be participating in the south district

divisional soccer tournament on Wednesday, October 5. Our intramural program will

begin in October for students in grades 4-6. Grade four students will begin with

invasion games which will start near the beginning of October. Our grade 5-6 students

will continue their program later in the October upon completion of the soccer season.

The Lord Roberts Terry Fox Run was held on Friday, September 30. This was the 20th

year that our school has participated in this event. Thank you so much to all community

members who supported this important event again this year.

We are looking forward to so many events and activities which will be ongoing

throughout the year. Please look to the newsletter for activity updates. If you have

any questions about your child’s program please don’t hesitated to contact me at the

school.

Have a wonderful year!

Math Corner! What tips can I use to help my child?

Be positive about math! Let your child know that everyone can learn math. Let your child know that you think math is important and fun. Point out the ways in which different family members use math in their

jobs. Be positive about your own math abilities. Try to avoid saying “I was

never good at math” or “I never like math”. Encourage your child to be persistent if a problem seems difficult. Praise your child when he or she makes an effort and share in the

excitement when he or she solves a problem or understands something for the first time.

Make math a priority of your child’s day. Point out to your child the many ways in which math is used in everyday

activities. Encourage your child to tell or show you how he or she uses math in

everyday life. Include your child in everyday activities that involve math - making

purchases, measuring ingredients, counting out plates and utensils for dinner.

Play games and do puzzles with your child that involve math. They may focus on direction or time, logic and reasoning, sorting or estimating.

Do math problems with your child for fun. When doing math with your child, use household objects such as

measuring cups and containers of various shapes and sizes, as well as math tools such as a ruler and calculator.

LEARNING

IN

ACTION!

A Reminder To All

Visitors! For safety reasons, please

immediately CHECK IN at the school office if you are visiting

Lord Roberts School or picking up a student before regular

dismissal times!

The ABCs of Back-to-School Safety As families begin another school year, please remember to review safety rules with your children for walking, biking,

skateboarding and bussing to school:

• Encourage them to travel with friends whenever possible;

• Develop an ‘action plan’ in the event of a scary situation;

• Point out Block Parent homes and other safe places along their route;

• Keep a list of your child’s friends, addresses and phone numbers.

Parents and grandparents may recall the familiar Block Parent window sign, which depicts an adult lending a helping hand to a

child. Since 1975, the Block Parent goal has been to ensure ‘safe homes with safe strangers’. To that end, every adult in a Block

Parent home is background-checked by the police every two years, at no cost to the volunteers.

Today’s Block Parent program has the participation of over 3,000 families in over 180 elementary schools throughout the city of

Winnipeg. We are singles, parents, grandparents, empty-nesters, home daycare operators, retirees – any homeowner interested in

the safety of their community. Our volunteers dedicate their time as the eyes and ears of our neighbourhoods.

If you are interested in becoming a Block Parent, or in having a presentation at your school, please call 204-284-7562. Further

Block Parent and general safety information is available by visiting our website: www.winnipegblockparents.mb.ca
