Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. In the Gospel (Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18)), Jesus singles out three practices of the religious life for his disciples, namely: almsgiving, prayer, and fasting. But why does Jesus ask us to do this? Is it because we seek to glorify ourselves and draw other people’s attention to ourselves so that they may think highly of us? Or to give glory to God?

Jesus, however, warns his disciples of self-seeking glory. Rather than be preoccupied with looking good and seeking praise from others, He asks us to grow in our loving devotion to God.

We, therefore, pray, give alms and sacrifice because we follow Christ who loves us even to giving up his life for us. Every time we engage in these Lenten practices, we renew our discipleship in Christ and make ourselves ready to sacrifice, even our lives, for the good of our brothers and sisters.

May God through the gift of the Holy Spirit enable us to devote ourselves to prayer, almsgiving and sacrifice this season of Lent.

God Bless, Father Rolyn Francisco

Charity & Development Appeal 2016

“Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ig-norant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead.” –Pope Francis

This weekend starts the annual Charity and Development Appeal. The CDA plays an important role in supporting and nurturing the faith of all those in our Diocese. The CDA is love and faith in action. A gift of $120 or $12 per month can help feed a

family of 4 for a week and provide an expectant mother a first look at her baby through an ultrasound. The impact of your gift can reach more people through CDA. Help support the more than 70 programs and organizations across the Diocese. With your gift to the CDA, you heed the Pope’s call to be an instrument of God’s mercy. More information can be found at www.dphx.org/cda.

Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to give your heart. Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just as you are before your God. Come.

One day every tongue will confess you are God, one day every knee will bow. Still the greatest treasure remains for those who will gladly choose you now.

The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016

Ps 95 (94): 6-7 O come, let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for he is the Lord our God.

Come, follow Me. Come, follow Me. Leave all behind and follow Me.

They left their nets on the shore one day. They left the tables where the taxes are paid.

They left their homes and their families, To follow a man from Galilee. He said:

If you follow Me you'll be fishers of men. If you follow Me, you must be born again. Light to the world and salt of the earth;

Bearing the Good News, proclaiming My word. So:

Now I must go up to Jerusalem, To suffer and die for the sins of men.

Will you come with Me for the sacrifice; Stand by My side as I pay the price?

Traditional/John Bell

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer pray’r in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the pris’ners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, And admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around, Through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

My life flows on in endless song, above earth's lamentation. I hear a real though far off hymn that hails a new creation.

No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that Rock I'm clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing; It sounds and echoes in my soul; how can I keep from singing? What though the tempest 'round me roar. I hear the truth it liveth. What though the darkness 'round me close. Songs in the night it giveth. When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, and hear their death knells ringing; When friends rejoice both far and near, how can I keep from singing? The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing. All things are mine since I am His; how can I keep from singing?

Hungry, I come to You, for I know You satisfy. I am empty, but I know Your love does not run dry.

So I wait for You. So I wait for You.

I’m falling on my knees, offering all of me. Jesus, You’re all this heart is living for.

Broken, I run to You, for Your arms are open wide; I am weary, but I know Your touch restores my life.

Cf. Ps 107 (106): 8-9 Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men, for he satisfies the thirsty soul, and the hungry he fills with good things.

Father, I give myself to You, Do with me as You will. For whatever You do, I thank You. I am ready for all. Let only Your will be done in me, as is done in Your creation. I ask nothing else. Father, I surrender, I place myself in Your hands, Because You are my Father. And because I love You. Into Your hands, I commend my spirit.
