UMW NEWS

UMW APRIL CALENDAR Tues., Apr. 4—9:30 General Mtg.-Easter program by Pastor Theresa Host: Deborah Circle Sat., Apr. 8—A Day Apart @ Northshore UMC

Mon., Apr. 10 — Kirkwood Birthday Party, Host: Joy Circle Tues., Apr. 18—Circle Mtg. Day Tues., Apr. 25—Study: Climate Justice (gather at 9:00am; study 9:30-1:30 in Room 219, bring a sack lunch; drinks and dessert provided). Thurs., Apr. 27— Executive Mtg.

SPOTLIGHT ON MARTHA CIRCLE

United Methodist Women's purpose is to" know God, experience freedom in Christ, develop supportive fellowship, and expand concepts of mission." Only a small part of this involves attending meetings. Martha Circle members go beyond showing up. They act. All the Martha Circle members are involved in our faith community at First UMC. Some share their musical talents playing for nursing home service, funerals, and special worship times like Lenten Lunch. Still others volunteer time and expense to prepare meals for the Care Team, volunteer in Family Promise, Stephen Ministry, and Shield the badge. They donate supplies for Back Pack Ministry and SOS Food Bank as do so many generous members of our congregation. Outside the local church, they support Friends of the Library and serve as volunteers in many civic organizations. Some members deliver Meals on Wheels. Donate time and effort to the SOS Food Bank. Server on the Election Board. Belong to organizations like the Art League, whose members lead craft time for seniors at Rio Terra and Eden Hill. Garden Club members teach their skills in workshop that add beauty to the community. Individually and in civic organizations Martha Circle members honor Christ by serving others. Blessings, Jo Mortimer, Circle Chairperson

UMW IN MISSION: STUDYING CLIMATE

JUSTICE

From the Social Principals of the United Methodist Church: All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation. We should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect. (Social Principles, ¶ 160) Please join UMW on April 25th as our Hill Country UMW President Diane Wood leads us in a study on Climate Justice. The changes in temperatures, from the unusual cold in the American Northeast to the blazing temperatures in the Southwest, to the droughts, fires and floods across the country and around the world, affect some more than others. As we continue to explore this important issue, we want everyone to be aware of the ways policy and law has created a multiplicity of environmental pressures on some “sacrificed” communities. In this study participants gain an understanding of the lens that United Methodist Women uses to look at climate justice, along with the environmental justice steps that some communities most affected by injustices are taking to address the concern. All are welcome to attend!

ADULT MINISTRIES

Join us for Games – Several Times a Month! Room 118

•MahJong – American style. Every Thursday 2:00

•Varied Table Games – Skip Bo, Mexican Train, Scrabble, and others. Every Tuesday 2:00

•Bridge – Second Wednesday 2:00 All are invited!

Do you wonder where your time goes every day or every week? Sometimes I wake up and am surprised to realize it’s already Friday – AGAIN! My days and lots of evenings are generally filled (and fulfilled) by the ministry I’m honored to be a part of here at FUMC. It is one of my greatest joys to get to work with our amazing church staff as well as hundreds of members of our congregation!

Sometimes I go home exhausted from a long day, and it feels great to just “sit” and “be still” for a while. Sometimes I go home exhilarated by a planning meeting or a great event, and it’s difficult to calm down from the excitement of seeing God at work in this community. For me, those are both good feelings!

There are also evenings – or even full days – when I do nothing. I don’t reach out to anyone, I don’t read a worthwhile book, I don’t take care of business in our home, I don’t speak to God, I don’t even enjoy the beautiful birds in my back yard. I realize that I have watched television, or fretted about things out of my control, or spent hours playing meaningless games on my iPad. The evening is gone, and it will never come back.

Do you spend too many of your days like that? Wouldn’t it feel better if you looked back at the day or the week and could celebrate that you were a part of something good? Come join in ministry at your church: there are

•children and youth groups who need meals prepared

•grounds to be cleaned and tidied

•Family Promise weeks that need meals, groceries, and hosts

•VBS kids who need volunteers

•Sunday School classes that need teachers and helpers

•Choirs that need singers

•Prayer shawls that need to be knitted

•Folks in nursing homes that need to be visited

•Hurting people who need prayers

The list is pretty long, and it is just a sampling of the many opportunities to be a working part of the Body of Christ here at FUMC. Everyone can be in ministry in one way or another. I encourage each of you to ask God how He would have you serve. Why? Because it’s so much more of a blessing to find rest at the end of a day that you have walked with Christ than to find yourself rest-less at the end of a day that missed participating in God’s Kingdom.
