Introducing Our Adjudicators

Dr. Katherine Dowling - Piano Praised by the New York Times for her “crystalline perfor-mances, gestural expressiveness, and careful attention to color”, and by the Boston Globe for her “effortless incisive-ness”, award-winning Canadian pianist Dr. Katherine Dowling performs across North America and Europe. Equally compelling as a Solo, collaborative, and ensemble player, she holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University. Dr. Dowling is familiar to audiences as a multi-year fellow of the Tangle-wood Music Center, a New Fromm Fellow, a Britten-Pears Young Artist, an Internation-al Musicians’ Seminar at Prussia Cove artist, and through extensive involvement and numerous positions at The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Orlando Festival, and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. As a member of the chamber ensemble Gruppo Montebello, Dr. Dowling appears on several critically-acclaimed recordings on the Et-cetera label; recent performances have also been broadcast on the CBC (Canada), BBC (United Kingdom), and National Radio 4 (Holland). In addition to her performing activi-ties, Dr. Dowling teaches piano and chamber music at the University of Regina. She was invited to the jury for the National Finals of the 59th Canadian Music Competition, has enjoyed adjudicating at both the regional and provincial levels (throughout Alber-ta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba), and teaches masterclasses and workshops through-out Canada every season.

James McCarthy - Band

Jim McCarthy is an established freelance musician with accolades in a wide range of skills – performing–composition – arranging– studio production - music educa-tion and instrument design and building. He graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1996 with a Masters degree in Music Performance –Percussion. Jim currently maintains annual tours in Australia performing with Musica Viva In Schools as well as running various masterclasses and clinics. He also arranges music for school bands and produces sequences and recordings for The Fun Music Company. Additionally Jim runs a web based business that focuses on designing and building custom percussion instru-ments, as well as a subscription website that produces video tutorials for marimba technique and monthly critiques of percussion performances on youtube. Jim current-ly performs with “The Rhythm Works” for Musica Viva and has done so every year since 1996 – as well as other occasional contracts. His performance skills focus on per-cussion instruments, so much of his earlier compositions featured these. Most notable are Justification (percussion duo), Synergetic Oxymoron (concerto for percussion and chamber ensemble), the Water Suite (percussion duo and small ensemble), Project

Arcadia (marimba & percussion trio) and his Concerto for marimba and wind orches-tra. Many of these compositions feature Jim’s gigantic Contra-Bass marimbas which he has a passion for building. As a specialist in rudimental snare drum and drumming technique, Jim has become highly sought after to give clinics and master-classes throughout Australia. His book Stick Technique is recognized globally as a definitive work on the subject. He also has a strong interest in developing beginner musicians and in 2001 completed a textbook and video tutorial series for first time drummers - Begin Drumming. Jim’s current focus in education is in the production of resources and learning materials for keyboard percussionists. .

Melissa Morgan - Vocal Raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Melissa Morgan holds a Master of Music Performance in Choral Conducting from the University of Western Ontario, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Regina. She is also an Associate of the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT) in piano, voice, and flute. In the fall of 2012, Melissa took a two-year sabbatical from her position at Lu-ther College High School to begin doctoral studies in Choral Conducting at the University of Toronto. During her time in Toronto, Melissa was Assis-tant Conductor of the MacMillan Singers (2012-2013) and the Conductor of the Univer-sity of Toronto Women’s Chorus (2013-2014). Melissa is the recipient of the Elmer Iseler National Graduate Fellowship in choral conducting (2012-present). Melissa com-bines performance and scholarship with her teaching. She has published in the Ameri-can Choral Directors Association, Choral Journal and presented a poster session and lecture recital at the Choral Canada Podium Conference (2014 & 2016). Melissa is the Pfeifer Memorial Chair of Music at Luther College High School where she is responsible for the Luther College Senior Choir, the auditioned choir AVE and the IB music pro-gram. Her choirs have performed at the Association of Canadian Choral Communities Podium Conference (2010 & 2016) and as showcase choirs at the Rocky Mountain Mu-sic Festival in Banff (2011 & 2015). In January 2016, Melissa was honoured to be the guest conductor of the Winnipeg School Division Honour Choir. On November 11, 2016 Melissa completed the requirements for the doctoral program in Choral Conducting, under the supervision of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt. In June 2017, she convocated from the University of Toronto with a Doctorate of Musical Arts.

Music History In Weyburn - Mary Johnson Mary (Chalmers) Johnston (1947-2016) was an accomplished musician and studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She received her A.R.C.T. in music in 1967. Her fifty plus year career as an impressive music teacher began when she was 15 years old. She taught piano for many years and then in 2001 began teaching singing as well. Mary was also involved in many singing groups such as The Junior United Church Choir, the United Church Choir, and Octavius Choir and then eventually became the United Church Choir director. Her musical skills were deliv-ered with precision and accuracy and she devoted her life to the United Church either through her talents or support. Mary and her husband Dale were blessed with 48 years of mar-

riage and she was a dedicated mother to her 3 boys. She had many talents other than music. She had a green thumb, enjoyed gardening, and was a wonderful baker. She did things carefully and took the time to do it the right way. She fought her cancer valiantly on and off for over 30 years. “Mary was a lady, composed, prompt, and always prepared. As a musician she pos-sessed perfect pitch and while she was a perfectionist in her own performances, she was patient with the choir or student who had less skill. She taught by her Golden Rule-- prac-tice, practice and more practice. Her entire life was devoted to music, as a child then teacher, opening up the joy music gives to the performer and the listener. Mary faced illness with courage and left life too early, but she left behind her musical footprints where ever she walked.” Tribute by Jean Fahlman
