ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAMMEElement Purpose Time/Format Sessions
1MorningPlenarySessions
All deletes discuss theenvironment in which weoperate and developprinciples and strategies tobuild alterative andcommunity media in SouthAfrica.
Every morning from 9h00 to10h30 we gather in the plenaryhall. Sessions begin with inputfrom an ‘expert’ panel, then wediscuss the days topic in smallbuzz groups before feeding backto a plenary discussion.
The following plenary sessions are planned:• The Role of media in our communities• The challenges facing our communities• Exploring the causes and solutions to our
communities challenges• The challenges facing the media in South Africa• Presenting the outcomes of the Mindblast & BGM• Reflecting on the outcomes & closing thoughts
2ReportingCommunityIssues
Community media and civilsociety activists unpackhow specific issueimpacting on theircommunities are currentlycommunicated, developalternative approaches tocommunicating theseissues, and exploreconcrete media productionpartnerships.
Daily from 11h00 to 13h30 webreak into +-10 workshops ofabout 30 people. Each workshopwill examine the current state ofreporting (dominant themes,angles, sources) beforedeveloping an alternativeapproach to the issue that betterserves the interests of ourcommunities.
Workshops are planned on the following community issues:• Climate Change• Economics & Trade• Education• Gender inequality• Health• Job creation & unions• Land and Food Security• Racism & Xenophobia• Sport (& FIFA 2010)• Party Politics• Popular Organizations (CBOs, Unions, Churches,
Movements)• Water & Sanitation

Mindblast participantsexhibit their organization’swork, relax, and developinformal networks anddeepen partnerships.
During tea and meal breaks (andin the heat of the day from 14h30to 15h30) Mindblast participantswill enjoy unstructured time tomeet informally, exhibit projectsvisit each others exhibitions, andexplore partnerships.
The following activities are planned for this time:• Project Exhibitions• Alternative Media Film Festival• Informal networking & deepening partnerships

4NCRF Bi-annualGeneralMeeting
The NCRF BGM is thehighest decision makingbody of the NationalCommunity Radio Forum.NCRF Members willdeliberate on the state ofthe community radio sectorand the Forum - and mapthe way forward for theNCRF as well as electing anew NCRF Board.
From 14gh30 to 19h00 each daymembers of the NationalCommunity Radio Forum (NCRF)will participate the closed sessionsof the NCRF Bi-annual GeneralMeeting (BGM).
The BGM will comprise the following sessions:• Keynote addresses• Presentation & Adoption of organizational and
financial reports• Presentation & Adoption of Constitutional
amendments• Presentation & Adoption of BGM Resolutions• Election of NCRF Board
5PracticalSkillssessions
Participants will expresstheir creativity and enhancetheir media productionskills with practical trainingin media production.
From 16h00 to 19h00 participantsnot attending the NCRF BGM willbreak into +-10 workshops ofabout 15 people each. In theworkshop we will get mediaproduction skills and have anopportunity to produce media.
The following Practical Skill sessions are planned:• Cell-phone video production• Communication strategy & planning• Drama & script development• Digital story telling• Ethics of community journalism• Investigative Journalism• Layout & Design• Message Development• Photography• Poster making• Silk screening• Wall murals & public art
6EveningCelebrations
Participants relax after theday, enjoy culturalperformances and developinformal networks anddeepen partnerships
At 19h30 all participants gather fora dinner. During and after themeal various artiest from theNorthern Cape and beyond willentertain us.
Evening Celebrations will include:• Dance, music, and poetry performances form the
Northern Cape and other provinces;
