We are not speaking of everyone, of course, but
many such people live in the apartment
complex just behind our church building. We
spoke of the need to engage these people with
the Gospel recently at a Family Meeting. This is
not a proposal to make these families and
individuals our project. We must avoid that
approach altogether. Instead we need to
approach them as people to get to know, to
befriend, to serve and ultimately to love. If we
do this authentically, at the pace of Jesus, He
will do great things and surely the Kingdom of
God will find space to break out in many lives.
Our job is to be present and obedient to Jesus,
going at His pace and joining Him in the work
He is already doing in their lives.

Volume 11, Issue 6 As Jesus was going on down the road, he saw a tax
collector, Matthew, sitting at a tax collection
booth. “Come and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him, and
Matthew jumped up and went along with him. Later, as
Jesus and his disciples were eating dinner at Matthew’s
house, there were many notorious swindlers there as guests!
The Pharisees were indignant. “Why does your teacher
associate with men like that?” “Because people who are
well don’t need a doctor! It’s the sick people who do!” was
Jesus’ reply. Matthew 9:9-12
Of course Jesus knows there are no truly “well”
people. He was pointing to the fact that those
who are hurting the most, who suffer from lack
of privilege or under the weight of need or
loneliness or broken spirits, are the ones who are
most aware of their need. I am more convinced
than ever that these are the people who need to
see and hear the Gospel first and foremost. Not
that we would neglect sharing this Great News
with anyone willing to listen, but those most
likely to listen will be the Matthews of our world
– the people who are not in the mainstream of
middle class life. They will be the people who
most struggle to maintain healthy relationships,
pay the bills and who find joy and peace and
hope to be elusive at best.

As we head into summer we have a couple of exciting events coming up. First, the students and I would like to invite you to lunch! On June 25, we will be serving spaghetti right here at the worship center after the service. This will be a great time for food and fellowship. Donations will be accepted and all the funds raised will go directly to the students account to help offset the cost of their trip to Super summer. Together we can help offset the $215 registration fee for each student. You have to eat lunch anyway, and we would love to have you hang out while we serve you a delicious lunch.
Also, Super Summer will be July 24-28. We would love to have you join with us in prayer

LifeFest LifeFest LifeFest LifeFest Tanglewood MinistryTanglewood MinistryTanglewood MinistryTanglewood Ministry The LifeFest Team invites our church
family to join us at 2:45 p.m. on the
first and third Sundays of the month to
fellowship with the residents of the
Tanglewood nursing home. Please join
us for a time of sharing the Gospel,
singing hymns, and having genuine
fellowship with the residents. If you
have any questions, please contact Bill
Watts (273-5772), Sonja Dunstan (220-
3233) or Cyndi Hockenberger (608-

We are joining our friends from Lone Rock
Baptist Church in Arkansas on mission
again this year. The team is going back to
Bright Life Farms outside of Princeton,
Kentucky, June 11-17.
http://www.brightlifefarms.org. They will
be doing some construction and VBS for
the residents of the Farm.
Bright Life Farms, Inc. is a faith-based non-
profit group home for mentally or
developmentally challenged adults, 18 years
and older, who can do a lot of things, just
should never live alone. While Bright Life is
state licensed, it is not state supported,
which makes it a visible testimony to God’s
power to provide and gives Him the honor
for these homes.
Please pray for those going.

To all my Covenant Friends,
I would like to thank all of you who prayed
for me and Harley following my car acci-
dent. Harley (my puppy) somehow got out
of his harness and ran across four lanes of
the interstate. He was lost for 3 1/2 days. A
special thanks to all who searched and found
him. Eight pounds of white fur apparently
didn’t interest the coyotes! Two miracles in
three days!
To God be the Glory!

Topeka ShareFest 2017 was a success thanks to
all wo volunteered!
ShareFest is an event that was created with the
belief that churches and organizations can do
more together that any one group could do
separately to reach out to its community. This
year we served USD 501, The Topeka Rescue
Mission, and Boys and Girls Club of Topeka
by landscaping, painting, constructing, and
cleaning up the grounds of area schools and
buildings.
Our church assignment this year was at
McEachron Elementary, located very near the
Church at SW 29th Terr. and SW Indian Trail.
Projects included landscaping, painting,
constructing and cleaning up the grounds.
We would like to thank everyone who helped
especially Randy Gregg, event coordinator.
We are collecting tubes of toothpaste (any brand, full size) as an ongoing mission project. These will go in hygiene bags to be handed out at New Hope Food Pantry. While any size of toothpaste and type of hygiene item will be accepted, our focus is full-sized toothpaste. Other churches are focusing on one item as well, in order to cover all their needs. These may be left in the church office any time you are at the church.
New Hope averages 50-60 new families every month and is feeding over 3,500 people each month - almost 52,000 people in 2016! The toothpaste that CBC donates joins with donations of shampoo, toothbrushes, razors, feminine products and more to make up hygiene bags which are also handed out at New Hope. Thank you for your generosity!

witnesses to the ends of the earth. Serve Days
are one-day mission opportunities for groups
or individuals with desire and commitment to
serve and reach others for Christ. The
purpose is to saturate a community with the
love of Christ.
We have previously served La Harpe,
Lyndon, Atchison and Madison. This year we
will be serving in East Topeka with True
Light Baptist Church and a Hispanic church
plant in the same neighborhood.
Please register soon! We are trying to get a handle on the number of participants to plan on. Making work groups and preparing meals is difficult without early registrant numbers.
Some tasks to be done that day include: Home Repair/Construction, Yard Work, Smoke Detector Install Team, Hair Cutting Team, Kids Activities (Balloons, Bounce Houses, & Face Painting), Meal Prep, Prayer Walking/Evangelism, Child Care, Food Distribution.
Please register by going to the website http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/0tPzN43apA5v85hcjke7
Thanks for your help in making this ministry happen!
I want to invite you to be a part of
putting together a team of people
who will lead this effort to engage
people and meet needs. If you feel a
particular urgency, a compelling
interest or sense your giftedness
would be helpful in our stepping
forward into the lives of our
neighbors, please contact me by
phone or email (listed below) and we
will set up a time to meet and begin
prayerfully planning our first steps.
I am very confident God is in this
just as He has shown Himself present
and active in our ministry at McClure
Elementary and Tanglewood nursing
home. I look forward to seeing how
this unfolds with you!
Blessings,
Casey

Dr. Tom Morgan, Professor of Music
Everyone welcome! Invite family and friends.
Fun! Food! Fellowship!
Covenant Baptist Church, ~ 5440 SW 37th Street ~ 785-273-2811
Professor Tom Morgan is director of percussion studies at Washburn
University where he teaches applied percussion and directs the Washburn
University Percussion Ensemble. As a performer, Tom is very active in
the Topeka and Kansas City areas, performing and recording with
numerous groups, including the Trilogy Big Band, a 17-piece jazz
ensemble with two CDs on the Sea Breeze Jazz recording label.
In 2016, Tom had the privilege of performing with The I.H.S (In His Service) World
Orchestra, a 17-piece jazz big band made up of musicians from the United States,
Canada, Switzerland, England, Norway, Sweden and Israel. This band has performed all
over the world, including most countries of Europe, Israel, Africa, and Cuba. Last
December they traveled to Vietnam and performed in and around three major cities:
Hanoi, Da Nang, and Saigon. They performed in the only church that is allowed to meet
legally. The orchestra also played in coffee shops, outdoor venues, a Christian
Businessman’s meeting, a hospital, the home of the former Miss Vietnam, and even in
an underwear factory! They were able to share the Gospel with many who had never
heard the good news about Jesus. God worked in amazing ways during the trip and
Tom is excited to share with you pictures and stories of his trip.
Bring a dessert to share and stay after the program.
We gather to celebrate life and encourage ministry through fellowship,
entertainment and informational opportunities.

that is need for five 1.5 hour sessions.
There are promotion instructions, snack
ideas, folders filled with children’s and
preschool Bible studies, activities for crafts
and music, recreation cards, music CDs and
more.
When: This is up to you! You may pick a
week and do five days in a row or pick a
month and do one day a week for five
weeks. The time of day is up to you too.
You may pick a morning, afternoon or
evening.
Where: Host children in your yard, on your
deck or your neighborhood park. If you are
not up to hosting, talk to Sarah Feather to
see where you may join with those who are.
Why: Seven out of 10 kids will walk away
from church after they turn 18. Statistics
like this remind us that only the Gospel
satisfies our innermost longings, and only
the gospel will transform our kids' hearts
and lives.
If there is any hope in reversing the
statistics, we must lead our ministries with
Gospel-centered teaching, transformation,
and mission that will point kids to Jesus.
We must provide the one thing that will
satisfy them and keep them connected to
church—the Gospel. Taken from

Training: Training is mandatory and just
about one hour long. Please RSVP to Sarah
Feather to get the location.
How: Please contact Sarah Feather to see
where you can help.
