in the staff room
I iz in ur mind and yu can't see me
What is digital literacy?
Who has a
account?
Digital literacy through engagement
Some really important concepts ...
"Digital Literacy is about mastering ideas, not keystrokes" Gilster, 1997
<literate></illiterate>
"It is really not possible to speak of illiterate and literate persons as two distinct categories" (unesco 1957)
Source http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/2011/11/22/how-to-develop-digital-literacies-in-yourself-and-others-presentation/#.UGEM26T9F60
"Digital Literacy is a condition, not a threshold" Martin, 2006
What started the project
The workplace environment
Conceptual thresholds
We all have gaps in our understanding.
For some staff these gaps are sometimes significant
Responsibility Locus
"We have a responsibility for what we do, but also for what we don't do."
There was an attitude among some that suggested they felt no responsibility for their own digital literacy
The workplace environment
Transferability
There exists a block in ability to transfer skills from one discipline to another
...or from application to application
"Digital literacy defines those capabilities which fit an individual for living, learning and working in a digital society" JISC
Horizon Report NZ 2011
Digital literacy is a key skill in every discipline and profession
Most academics are not using new and compelling technologies for learning & teaching, nor for their own research
The abundance of resources & relationships easily accessible via the Internet challenges us to revisit our roles as educators

Focus on Staff
"But you're not doing anything for students!"
• Students will not automatically be digitally literate
• Student engagement and access to learning will inevitably involve some technology
