Kelvin isturninguptheheatinEuropeKELVIN Jones is doing aDavid Hasselhoff in Ger-many — as a springboardto powering to the top ofthe UK charts.
Instead of making moveshere, the youngster from Stev-enage launched his career inmainland Europe.
Kelvin, 21, explained: “My friendsask all the time ‘You seem to be bigin Germany, why aren’t you bighere?’
“But I just started over there. Thereason why is a deep insider secret— basically, Radio 1 is the answer.
‘Build a back story’“Here you have to play to
them. If they don’t like you, there’s nowhere else to go.
“In Germany, they’ve gotover 200 equally importantstations — not just one nat-ional station.
“So if you fail at one, youcan go the next one and soon. You build a back storythen when you go to Radio1, you can say ‘You shouldplay my song as all thesepeople like it’.
“Germany is now the sec-ond biggest market after theUS, you could easily live offhaving a career there. The
UK is only big in terms of influ-ence as it’s cooler than Germany.
“There’s so much music here thatno one really appreciates it thatmuch. But when you turn up to asmall town in Germany, they lookat you like you’re a god and thecrowds really listen.”
We’ll soon get a taste of Kelvin’sstuff — his debut album Stop TheMoment is out on March 25.
It’s packed full of love songs andhe’s making no apologies.
Kelvin said: “I’m not Bob Dylan.“I can’t write songs about politics
or changing the world.“More than half my songs are
about girls that broke my heart.“I always felt that was a bit stu-
pid. And then I spoke to a friend ofmine who’s about 50 and he said,
‘That’s what matters’. On yourdeathbed, you’re not wondering whothe president is — you are thinkingabut the people you love. So Ithought, ‘F*** it, I’m going to writeabout the things I care about’ andright now, that’s what I care about.
“Some singer/songwriters writeabout love a lot and it’s become thisstigmatised thing.
“At this point in life, I don’t feelqualified to write about much else.”
Kelvin is out on tour with JamesMorrison — they’re at Glasgow’s 02Academy tonight.
‘Didn’t make sense’And he’ll get to showcase his
development from his early days, after quitting a degree in mechani-
cal engineering. He said: “My prob-lem is that the first 100 songs Iwrote were s*** so it didn’t makesense to keep them. What’s interest-ing is I guess I’ve been in themusic industry for a year. I wrote70 per cent of the songs on thealbum on my own. They sign youand say ‘Go write some songs’.”
Kelvin did not get into musicuntil well into his teens because hewas fixated with football, but heinsists he’s in the zone now.
He added: “When I was 16 sud-denly I heard John Mayer and BBKing and I picked up the guitar.
“Nothing beats just standing infront of people and playing music.
“There’s no better marketing.“We’re going to do a bunch of
playing this year.“I’ll hit up as many festi-
vals as I can and do a head-line tour at the end of theyear. That’s the only way.
“I‘ve spoken to other peo-ple who’ve been in thisindustry longer than me andthey’ve said, ‘You need peo-ple around you to help but ifyou’re not pushing it your-self, don’t expect it to justgo’.
“I’m so, so focused. I don’tknow where I’m going, but Iknow where I want to go.”lFor more, go to facebook.com/kelvinjones
THE LAPELLESWHO: Gary Watson (vocals/guitar),Leon Green (guitar), Jack Anderson(bass/vocals), Christopher Ballantyne(synth), Jamie Holmes (drums)WHERE: East KilbrideFOR FANS OF: Arctic Monkeys, TheVaccines, The CribsJIM SAYS: The Lapelles first caught myattention around a year ago when I sawthem at Stereo in Glasgow.
They were a last-minute addition to theScottish Heroes night, organised byalumni of the Behind The Noise musicand business education programme forsecondary school students.
Their version of Orange Juice’s Rip ItUp was a highlight of the night. Their
own material was what really excited methough — indie rock with a bit of spice, and amazing stage presence.
Since then, things have developedquickly for the young band, all are just 19except for 21-year-old singer Gary.
They’ve had national airplay on RadioX, and last week their song Seventeenfeatured on the line-up announcementvideo for this year’s T In The Park. Fin-gers crossed they will secure a slot!
Picked up by London-based manage-ment company Wildlife Entertainment
(Arctic Monkeys, Travis, Royal Blood),things are set to step up a gear.
Gary said: “We’ve been able to get alot more creative and experimental whenwriting and I think our newest songsshow that.”
The guys are back in the studio soon. Ican’t wait to hear the results. If they areas good as the recent tracks, they’ll beonto a winner. The Lapelles’ singleSnakehips/Seventeen is out now.
Catch them at King Tut’s in Glasgowon March 26 with The Trend, Feet Of Clayand IBG. They’ll also be back at Tut’s onApril 27 supporting VANT.MORE: facebook.com/TheLapelles1lJim presents a weekly showcase of New Musicon Amazing Radio Sundays 2-4pm.amazingradio.com jimgellatly.com

THE sinister, masked clergyjetted back to London toclose their European tour intruly grandiose fashion. And the Grammy award-

seated crowd gave theirthanks to Spirit, He Is andthe incongruous satanicsing-along Year Zero. But it was the humorous,

THE AMAZONS: Stay WithMe. This band of scruffballs from Reading launchstraight into the action onthis noisy and visceralnew single. Indie rock atits very best. HHHHFLO RIDA FT. JASONDERULO: Hello Friday. Two of pop’s naffest starsteam up on this run-of-the-mill celebration of theweekend. Snore. HHHAILEE STEINFELD FT.DNCE: Rock Bottom. Aftercontroversial debut LoveMyself, this sounds likesomething off her mateT Swizz’s album 1989.
HHHZARA LARSSON FT. TINIETEMPAH: Lush Life. Aslight reworking ofSwedish Larsson’soriginal track, this timefeaturing Tinie.Unfortunately it workedbetter without him. HHHICONA POP: SomeoneWho Can Dance. Failing toequal the pop brilliance ofI Love It, this track suffersfrom cheap-soundingproduction and weirdlysubdued vocals. HHHCORINNE BAILEY RAE:Been To The Moon. Thisheads up Rae’s upcomingalbum –her first in sixyears. Her voice is aslovely as ever and hermellow, soulful sound hasnewfound edge. HHHHCHARLI XCX: VroomVroom EP. The firstrelease on Charlie’s labelVroom Vroom Recordingsis a tirade of warped, hyperactive pop, produced by PCMusicaffiliate SOPHIE. HHHHGWEN STEFANI: Make MeLike You. Stefani hasattempted to cash in onher 90s pop starcredentials on this track, which emulates the likesof Moloko and JenniferPaige. Alas, it’s totallyunmemorable. HHHBRINGME THE HORIZON:Follow You. The Sheffieldband are remarkablyrestrained on thislovestruck single fromtheir fifth album That’sThe Spirit. HHHHTHE CORRS: I DoWhat ILike. A numbing blur ofplatitudes and wishy-washy instrumentation –this is the very definitionof background music. HH
