5. The Renaissance

Renaissance is the result of the application ofHumanistic ideas in the field of art.

It arose in Florence (Italy) in the 15th century(Quattrocento) and spread in Rome and Europe inthe 16th (Cinquecento).

Characteristics:

- The artistic model was inspired by classical antiquity:- materials and forms used in Greece and Rome.

- Greek and Roman mythology.

- Beauty of human body

- Art was inspired by nature and sought to representreality. Mathematical methods were used tocalculate proportions and linear perspective.

- Improved frescoes and invented the oil painting.

- Anthropocentrism: buildings were made on a humanscale and humans were the protagonists ofsculptures and paintings: portraits.

• Masaccio painted the Holly Trinity using the linear perspective.

• Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) produced high quality worksthanks to the sfumato technique which consisted on softening theoutlines of the figures.

• Michelangelo (1475-1564) showed special interest in nakedbodies, movement, variety of poses and volume. His main workswere the frescoes at the Sixtine Chapel in the Vatican: the ceilingand the altar of the Last Judgement.

The Flemish school

In the Netherlands, the mostsignificant art was paintingthanks to a powerful andwealthy bourgeoisie whocommisioned many artworksto decorate their houses.

Flemish painters were the first who used the oilpainting technique. It consisted on the dissolution ofpigments (colours) in linseed oil. They also usedcanvas as support.

Flemish painters achieved brilliant effects of colouring,great luminosity and a high degree of detail. The mainrepresentatives were:

– The van Eyck brothers initiated this school with the Ghent Altarpieceand Jan´s The Arnolfini Portrait.

– Rogier van der Weyden introduced the expression of feelings into theDescent from the Cross.

– Bosch caricatured the society of his day through fantastic scenes andcreatures in The Garden of Early Delights.

Some kings and nobles commisioned Italian artists orbought Italian works of arts.

Moreover, some European artists went to Italy to studythe new style and introduced it to their countries.

- The most important artistic figure in Germany was Albrecht Dürer, great

engraver and painter: his most remarkable works were his self-portraitsand Adam and Eve inspired by the classical sculptures and the Renaissanceideal of beauty.
