5 Crazy Ideas To Help Save The Environment

    Urinating in the shower

As disgusting as some people may find thethought of urinating in the shower its actuallyjust the same as urinating in the toilet apartfrom the fact that when you flush the toiletafter a pee you use anything between 3 and 12litres of fresh, clean, water (depending on thetype of toilet you have and how modern it is).

Even the most modern toilets will use at least

3 litres of water on each flush. Thats a lot ofclean, fresh, water to get rid of a few millilitresof urine and it adds up over the year.

If there are three people in your household and each person had a peewhile taking their daily shower youd save at least 3,285 litres of watereach year.

    Dishwasher Cooking

As crazy as this may sound at first itsnot really that crazy when you stopand think about it. Your dishwasher ispretty much the same as an ovenapart from it has a few extra featureslike soap and water but essentially itsthe same as an oven due to it being

insulated inside and having a heating element.

Now obviously there is some limitations as to what you can cook in adishwasher but any food that can be poached can be cooked in adishwasher. Salmon would be an obvious choice and would need wrappingin tin foil to ensure that the soapy water didnt reach the actual fish. With the heat build-up inside the dishwasher during the wash cycle itwould cook the salmon while washing the pots. This would not only saveenergy but will also save you some time as well.

Just make sure that youve wrapped the food with foil so that itswaterproof and be careful not to puncture the foil when placing it in thedishwasher. Its best to place the food (in the foil package) in the top rackof the dishwasher away from the dirty pots and run the dishwasher on ahot setting (usually above 160 degrees F). Make sure that the dry cycle

has completed before opening the door.

As with any cooking method, make sure that the food is thoroughlycooked before eating. Undercooked food can be unsafe.

    Resomation

Resomation is an environmentally friendlyway to dispose of corpses and is used byfuneral parlours.

Resomation is a patent pending, environmentally beneficial alternative tocremation and burial and is both dignifiedand respectful. It has been developed inresponse to a growing desire for greater

    choice and increasing environmentalawareness.

Environmental research carried out by the independent consultancySustain a leading carbon reduction company has shown that thesubstitution of Resomation for cremation as part of a funeral will reducethat funerals emissions of greenhouse gases by approximately 35%.

The energy needed for the Resomation process in the form of electricityand gas is less than one-seventh of the energy required for a cremation.

In the UK up to 16% of all mercury is estimated to be emitted fromcrematoria because of the fillings in teeth, Resomation produces noairborne mercury emissions.

    The Resomation Process

In Resomation the coffin is placed into a Resomator, and instead of fire, uses a water and alkali based method - also known as alkaline hydrolysis- to break the body down chemically.

The process is normally 2-3 hours long, the same length of time as anaverage cremation and once complete, a sterile liquid and bone ashremain. The sterile liquid is returned to the water cycle and just likecremation the bone ash remains are placed in an urn and returned toloved ones.

    Cloud Whitening

Cloud reflectivity modification is a proposedprocess of altering clouds to make themmore or less reflective, in order to changetheir effect on climate.

There are two hypothesised forms: cirrus

stripping and marine cloud brightening.High, cold cirrus clouds tend to allowsunlight through, yet reflect infra-red from

the Earth's surface. Therefore, thinning or removing these clouds reducestheir reflectivity to infra-red and results in a net cooling effect on theEarth's climate.

Conversely, low cloud tends to be warm and highly reflective to sunlight, especially when the cloud is white due to the presence of smaller droplets(because of the Twomey effect). Therefore, modifying these clouds to

make them more reflective cools the climate. This proposed technique isknown as 'marine cloud brightening' or 'cloud whitening' on low cloud.

By modifying the reflectivity of clouds, the albedo of the Earth would bealtered. The intention is that this technique, in combination withgreenhouse gas emissions reduction (and possibly other geoengineeringtechniques) will be sufficient to control global warming. The effect isexpected to be fully reversible, as the cloud condensation nuclei particlesprecipitate naturally.

However, like any planetary-scale project dealing with the complexclimate system, there is a non-trivial risk of unintended consequences.

    White Deserts

The idea of making large areas of desertwhite by adding reflective plastic sheets

covering 67,000 square miles (170,000km2) of desert every year between2010 and 2070 to reflect the Sunsenergy.

This technique can give globallyaveraged 1.74W/m2 of negativeforcing, which is insufficient to offsetthe 3.7W/m2 of positive forcing from a

doubling of CO2, but is still a very significant contribution and is sufficient

to offset the current level of warming (approx. 1.7W/m2).

However, the effect would be strongly regional, and would not be ideal forcontrolling Arctic shrinkage, which is one of the most significant problemsresulting from global warming.

Furthermore, the total area required during 2010-70 is larger than allnon-polar deserts combined. Unless there is a breakthrough in thematerial used to reflect the suns heat then this method isnt viable.
