NEW PARISH RECTORY

It is my responsibility to report to you that as of tomorrow, Monday, I and Monsignor Depman will be installed in the new rectory, located at 316 Welcome Ave in the Heather Grove development. The house is literally behind the parish property. It was purchased for $327,857 including closing costs. The house was thoroughly checked out by a professional inspector and deemed by him to be in good shape and worthy of our investment, after the seller addressed a few issues. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia approved the purchase. It has been a long process to come to this point, and believe me, I am relieved that it is done. Although now it is time to unpack. Ugh!

Our new rectory is ready for immediate occupancy but we need to make some changes for it to

serve as a long-term residence for two priests. The major selling point of 316 Welcome Ave was the location. The second was the potential to turn the basement into the living quarters for Msgr. Depman. For almost twenty-eight years monsignor has lived in the attic of the old rectory without any complaints. We now have an opportunity to provide this hard-working servant of God with a living space that is more suitable and worthy of him. He has been a great friend of the parish, always available for Mass and emergency calls when needed. He was a great help in particular to Msgr. Graf when he was sick. Moreover, by founding St. Mary’s Mission and then St. Rocco Parish to serve Latino Catholics in our area, he has alleviated that responsibility from our parish. (As a territorial parish we are obligated to provide Mass and pastoral care to all the Roman Catholics in our boundaries.) We would be overwhelmed without his ministry. So you can understand that I did not want to have to ask Msgr. Depman to find another place to live. We are blessed to have him with us.

The work to turn the basement into comfortable living quarters will cost over $65,000. Rugs for

other parts of the house and moving costs will come to another $10,000. It’s funny how we have to spend money to save it, but fortunately these are only one-and-done expenses. In the next few years we will save a lot of money by having moved the rectory from Evergreen Street to Welcome Ave; less taxes since the new property is a lot smaller, less insurance because we will be covering only one building rather than three, less utilities and less upkeep costs. Even more important are the enormous liabilities that would have hit us in the next few years: the shoring up of the bell tower, fixing the roof of the chapel enough to keep it from collapsing, repairing windows and the brick walls of the rectory, etc. You can imagine the relief that the Finance Council and I are feeling!

The proceeds from the sale of the Evergreen Street properties will cover most of our costs. We

have already received pledges of $23,000 in support of the rectory project but are still short of our need. If we receive the needed resources the renovation of the basement will include putting in a door for immediate access to the outside (a safety issue), expanding the bathroom to include a shower, replacing a nasty rug, and putting in a heater/air-conditioning unit in the sitting room and bedroom. It may take some time to get this done, but don’t worry, Msgr. Depman will not in the meantime be out in the cold – he will use a guest room on the second floor. If you feel moved to contribute to this project that will benefit such an excellent priest, and have the secondary effect of increasing the value of the home, please see me or Gene Fogarty, president of the Parish Development Council. Or you might simply write a check to ABVM Parish with an explanatory note.

Gene and I are happy to answer any questions you might have about the new rectory and even

take you for a tour. Finally, let me close with a thank you to St. Joseph, Patron of homebuyers. He heard our prayers! Peace to all.

4th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jesus had a way of amazing the crowds. There was something very different about not only what he taught but how he taught it. He brought an authority to what he said that gave it a credibility that was not experienced elsewhere. His words were not only prophetic but rang true to the experience of the people, especially those who were poor, marginalized, victimized, lost, or forgotten. Do Jesus’ words ring true to you? The Gospel message transcends time and space and has a profound relevancy in every generation. Jesus is still trying to point us toward our truth and have us see and accept who we are in God. Are you ready to hear this? We are asked to bring credibility to this same Gospel message by how we live our lives.

Rest in Peace

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and all the

souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Eve Morrison

Please remember to pray for those in need of hope and healing.

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first twelve weeks of the 2018 Appeal more than two hundred fifty families have pledged more than $82,500 of which $60,500 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the parish and help us fund a few necessary projects. These include upgrade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, improve-ment of the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and improved use of electronic media in support of parish commu-nications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past four months has increased. The collection in-come through December for the fiscal year is almost $30,000 below our budgeted amount. Our beloved church with the associated facili-ties is 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and op-erating costs need to be ad-dressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

We are pleased to announce that our church has been selected to host homeless families in the Family Promise Program (up to 14 persons in all) for the week of February 11-18, 2017. Volunteer sign-ups are availa-ble in the church vestibule. To learn more about how to participate, please contact Sharon Hannan at [email protected] or call 484-678-2142.

Service Project

Reflections from our 2017 Confirmandi

“I am excited for a new journey ahead of me and I can’t wait to see what I learn next. I will love God no matter what is going on in my life. I wanted to do all these service projects because they were a lot of fun and I felt like I made a huge impact. I discovered that I like serving people. It makes me feel good to give help to people that need it.”

“ I love working with the little kids and would love to contin-ue the experience for years to come. I wanted to interact more with the children. I discovered the gifts of persistence and patience about myself by working with people. I can be more like my saint by paying more attention to God and lis-tening.”

The weekend of February 3-4, 2018, Father William Joensen will be visiting our parish on behalf of Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). Fr. William Joensen is a priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque (IA) ordained in 1989 and is a member of the philoso-phy faculty and dean of campus spiritual life at Loras College. As dean, he promotes the Catholic identity and mission of the College and collaborates with FOCUS missionaries in ministering to students and staff. He also provides sacramental ministry at area parishes and institutions, has served on medical ethics and hospice boards, and is an occasional contributor to the Magnificat series of publications.

FOCUS is a national organization serving college students on more than 137 campuses across the United States and three campuses in Europe. Over 660 FOCUS missionaries on these cam-puses invite students into a relationship with Christ and His Church, while equipping them for a lifetime of Catholic evangelization. Fr. Bill is excited to be with you soon and share with you the hope of the New Evangelization! To learn more, please visit www.focus.org

Visiting Priest

THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU VISIT YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR 2018

Available Option: Individual 70½ years old or older may make a charitable contribution from their annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

Advantages Individuals and eligible spouses can make an IRA charitable rollover and not have that transfer count towards your taxable income in the year you make the contribution. Charitable rollover amounts could count toward your RMD. By avoiding the recognition of taxable income, you may have less of your So-cial Security income subject to income tax.

Rules for Using an IRA Charitable Rollover Individuals must be 70½ years old or older. The rollover must be completed before December 31 of the year in which the contribution was to count against taxable income. Rollovers could only be made from traditional IRAs. Funds have to come DIRECTLY from the plan administrator to the parish.

These are generic advantages and rules. Talk with your financial advisor or plan administrator for advantages and rules applicable to your specific situation. If you wish to discuss this opportunity with a member of the Parish Development Council e-mail [email protected], President of the Development Council.

Are you new to the Parish

and would like to register?

We would love to have you!!

You can register every weekend after the 4:30 pm Vigil Mass and after the 10 am Mass. See a Parish Representative at the Registration Desk in the Adoration Chapel.

Mass Cards:

Due to the devotion of our parishioners, we no longer have Masses available for specific dates in the calendar year 2018. However, you are welcome to stop by the parish office for a Mass card. Your request and the usual donation of $10 will be passed on to St. Rocco Parish in Avondale, which still has a lot of openings for Mass intentions for this year and in 2018. If you want a specific date for the Mass to be said, however, you must contact St. Rocco Parish office directly at (610-268-3365). We will open our calendar to reserve Mass intentions for 2019 on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. To be fair to everyone, no reservations for Masses will be taken before then. Thank you for your understanding.
