From May to August, the base already achieved a 10 percent re- duction in solid waste diversion according to a recent audit. In order to reduce the amount of recyclables found in dump- sters, the 50th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental ele- ment has begun installing new signs on both refuse and recy- cling containers to specify what materials may be placed in each container. “Having the proper signage and adequate containers in- creases personnel awareness and gives them a willing attitude to make a difference,” said Douglas Chase, 50 CES environmental engineer here. Chase applauded the effort he has seen during the past two years. “In two years, Schriever went from a basement level 13 percent to a whopping 50 percent, which is an incredible improvement in that timeframe,” he said. The impressive numbers, however, have the potential to increase. “Civil engineering is hopeful that within the next two years, Schriever will utilize a municipal waste collection services that al- lows customers to comingle both recyclables and refuse in a single container eliminating material separation,” said Andy Jenson, 50 CES environmental element chief. In the meantime, 50 CES continues to look for ways to improve the recycling program and increase the percentage of recycled material on the base. “Recycling reduces the con- sumption of our natural resourc- es and the amount of energy required to make new products from scratch, as well as keeping these valuable resources from filling up our landfills,” said Chase. Lt. Col. Stephen Finn, 50 CES commander, said recycling pro- gram can’t be successful with- out full participation from the base. “I am extremely proud of the steps Team Schriever has taken to improve recycling numbers across the base. As a federal facil- ity, recycling as much solid waste as possible is essential for the en- vironment,” said Finn. “With the kind of motivation already being displayed, Schriever is on track to surpass the Air Force’s goal by 2015.” Base Briefs 5K Turkey Trot Run/Walk e Annual 5K Turkey Trot Run/ Walk will be held 9 a.m. Friday. Commentary by Lt. Col. Scott Angerman22nd Space Operations Squadron

The inspection is almost upon us or haven’t you heard? There’s a lot of activity going on across the 50th Space Wing and Team Schriever members have been work-ing long hours, as we push ourselves in our final preparations for the Compliance Unit Inspection. It’s understandable for tensions and stress levels to rise. Extra hours, atten-tion to detail, compliance focus, 101 comple-tion and readiness checks are all needed to ensure peak performance when the inspec-tors arrive.

Our outstanding wing deserves our best effort. But, in the midst of the run and gun and all the pressure to perform, remember to step outside inspection preparation mode and take time to thank those around you. Thank them for three good reasons:

1. Saying thank you is the right thing to do. We all need help in our lives and everyone likes to be recognized for their contributions. No one succeeds alone. I don’t know about you, but I feel very appreciative of those around me who I live, work with and depend on. A huge thank you goes to my family and the

heroes at 22nd Space Operations Squadron! A simple thank you sincerely offered and accepted is not just acts of politeness, but personal connections critical to successful relationships. Say thank you often.

2. Giving thanks is good for you. There is research out there that says an attitude of gratitude can result in greater personal sat-isfaction and happiness in your life. Studies have reported that gratitude is associated with improved emotional and physical well being. One might even say resiliency. In one study, participants who consciously focused on being grateful during a period of time:• Feltbetterabouttheirlives• Weremoreoptimistic• Weremoreenergetic• Weremoreenthusiastic• Weremoredetermined• Weremoreinterested• Weremorejoyful• Exercisedmore• Hadfewerillnesses• Gotmoresleep• Weremorelikelytohavehelpedsomeone

elseAppreciation promotes an outward fo-

cus to the world around us and can foster a positive perspective. As Melody Beattie, the author of the book “Gratitude” puts it,

With the holiday and winter season just around the corner, Team Schriever members are reminded of the various safety issues that usually come during this time of the year.

The holiday and winter safety theme for this year is “Safe-n-Sound, All Year Round” and the campaign runs from Friday through Jan. 2. It is designed to remind personnel to take time to include sound risk management in all their plans, whether traveling, celebrating or participating in winter activities.

“While the Air Force was fortunate to have no fatalities during fiscal 2010 and 2011 between Christmas and New Year, last year there were six,” said Tech. Sgt. Sarah Law, 50th Space Wing ground safety manager. “Four were between Thanksgiving and Christmas and two between Christmas and New Year. Five of those six were traffic-related. Since we all rush to get home for the holidays, this is the time for extra vigilance on the roads and extra attention to trip planning and preparation.”

This season, the campaign will focus on seven topics in-cluding travel planning, winter road conditions, holiday decorating, party season, other seasonal fire hazards, indoor and outdoor winter sports and don’t overdo, which includes drinking and activities.

According to the holiday safety message sent by the Air Force’s senior leadership, “All Airmen, uniformed and civil-

ian, have a responsibility to ensure a safe holiday for them-selves, their fellow Airmen, their wingmen and their families by being alert to safety risks on and off duty. We urge you to use common sense and keep your focus on risk management as we strive to enjoy a mishap-free season.”

“Of course, the goal this year is for zero fatalities,” Law said. “Another goal is to take what we learn this winter and apply it all the time; hence this year’s theme, ‘Safe-n-Sound, All Year Round.’”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are various ways to ensure safety during the holiday season:

1. Wash hands often to keep from spreading germs and getting sick. Wash hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds.

2. Bundle up to stay dry and warm. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: layers of light, warm clothing, mittens, hats, scarves and waterproof boots.

3. Manage stress. Don’t over-commit yourself and prevent holiday anxiety and pressure. Get enough sleep.

4. Don’t drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Whenever anyone drives drunk, they put everyone on the road in danger.

5. Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke. There is no safe amount of tobacco or secondhand smoke. Breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be dangerous.

6. Fasten seat belts while driving or riding in a motor

vehicle. Always buckle your child in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat or seat belt according to his or her height, weight and age. Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short the trip.

7. Get exams and screenings. Ask what exams you need and when to get them. Update your personal and family history.

8. Get your vaccinations, which help prevent diseases and save lives.

9. Monitor the children. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, drinks, household items and other objects out of kids’ reach. Dress warmly for outdoor activities. Develop and reinforce rules about acceptable and safe behaviors includ-ing electronic media.

10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so be careful to never leave fireplaces, space heaters, stoves or candles unattended. Have an emer-gency plan and practice it regularly. Keep safety in mind when decorating your home.

11. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures and refrigerate promptly.

12. Eat healthy and get moving. Eat fruits and vegetables. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat and sugar. Be active for at least two and a half hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least one hour a day.

Thanks“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to or-der, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

3. It’s the season. No, not inspection season. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. The upcoming Thanksgiving holi-day is an appropriate time to think about those people and things that make our lives meaningful and rewarding. Also, we should recognize those to whom we owe a debt of gratitude: our forefathers, families, friends and our nation’s men and women deployed overseas.

Going into the Thanksgiving Day week-end, let’s all have a safety focus and take care of our wingmen and our families.

Make sure your people have a place to share a meal and some football. If travel-ling by car during the holiday weekend, please make sure you are well rested, and you and your passengers are buckled up. Remember, Thanksgiving is one of the worst holiday weekends for drunk driv-ers. Be extra aware of any drivers who may be driving erratically and of course, have a plan when celebrating.

Finally, at this time of the year I’m espe-cially thankful we live in a free society – in a nation free to pursue our hopes/dreams,

free to express ourselves, free to worship, and free to practice democratic ideals in safety and security. As a grateful American, I’m thankful Schriever space professionals are on duty 24/7 protecting and enabling our values and way of life. It takes team contributions across this base to support and generate the space effects our country has come to rely on. Your demonstrated skill, dedication, motivation, service and sacrifice are impressive to experience and humbling to be a part of. Thank you for all you do.

The holidays are a time for enjoying family, friends and fellowship. Unfortunately, it’s also a time when holiday fare leads people to lose sight of their fitness goals.

“Air Force members are impacted more so than their family members, so it makes sense for them to maintain a healthy outlook during this time of heavy indulgence,” said Kim Houk, Schriever Health and Wellness Center exercise physiologist. “Keep in mind that it’s easier to maintain a healthy standard than gaining weight and forcing yourself to drop it later.”

Houk and Staff Sgt. Vanessa Arthur, HAWC diet therapist, recommend Air Force members prepare a personal health and nutrition plan prior to the holiday season.

“We’re not saying people shouldn’t enjoy themselves or refrain from taking part in holiday celebrations,” Arthur said. “However, limiting serving size is a good idea. Treat your plate as a sampler platter, as opposed to piling up food. It’s also a good idea to eat throughout the day instead of

going hungry in preparation for that big meal.”Heavy sauces, sugary treats and decadent cheeses always

find their way into the holiday picture. Avoiding these foods may be difficult, but Arthur advises members and families to counter them with vegetables and high-fiber foods like whole grains and bran.

Maintaining an exercise regimen during the holidays is also important and should help Airmen transition back into normal life after the holidays.

Houk recommends Airmen not skip cardio exercise for more than two days and to train for strength at least one day a week. All easily said, but such a plan could prove difficult for members who will travel during the holiday time frame.

“Even then, doing a little research can pay dividends,” she said. “Involve your friends and family in your workout. They may not be motivated, but you have the most to suf-fer through, but abandoning your fitness goals. Besides, if you’re traveling out of town, they may be members of a local gym and can get you in as a guest or could help you

find a good local gym.”Sustaining that workout plan is important, but Arthur

also cautions everyone to practice proper food safety, es-pecially at all-day affairs.

“Wash your fruits and vegetables, keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot,” she said. “Food often sits out for hours during family gatherings, so it’s a good idea to maintain awareness. Also, when preparing food, make sure you use separate knives for meats and vegetables, keep cooked meats away from raw meats and never store cooked meat below raw meat (possible drippings).”

Again, succumbing to temptation doesn’t have to break the health bank. Sauces and trimmings can be mitigated by preparing them from scratch. Houk and Arthur advise members and families to do some research to find lower calorie recipes. Many can be found at the following links.http://bit.ly/W5WiET and http://bit.ly/RCROkL

Challenges are defined as tasks or situations that test someone’s ability. As a choice and a challenge, I made the decision to wear the Air Force uniform. I wanted the challenges and skills that came hand in hand with the responsi-bility of wearing the uniform; I wanted the education benefits as well as the op-portunity to meet new people.

There are more challenges Airmen handle than meets the eye. An Airman is challenged to hold the same standards as a civilian, but also holds additional standards as a member of the military. Everyday there are the challenges of carrying on, not only the history, but traditions of the Air Force as well. There is a certain amount of discipline one must instill in their routine. There is that challenge to maintain a certain physical standard. I wanted a high expectation to live my life by.

I choose to wear the uniform to take

advantage of the opportunity to learn a career and go to school simultaneously. After I graduated high school, I attend-ed a community college to save money. Eventually, I decided to take a new course of action. I decided to wear the uniform as a reminder and motivator to continue learning and to further my education.

In addition, I wanted to challenge myself to meet as many new people as possible. I like to better myself with the help of both my co-workers and learn-ing from my mistakes. I like to broaden my perspective and keep an open mind to different opinions and mindsets. I enjoy the challenge of being a wingman and the feeling of overcoming obstacles with a team.

As a competitive person, I’ve learned how to tackle my goals. Wearing the Air Force uniform means taking on that challenge of being an Air Force repre-sentative in both the military and civil-ian eye. I wear the uniform for the tools I need to not be that expendable Airman, and ultimately, to serve my country.

Nearly identical to AEHF-1, it has eight times the capacity of a Milstar vehicle and is de-signed to perform its mission for 14 years.

Following a four-month journey, AEHF-2 reached geosynchronous orbit Aug. 27. Since then, more than 100 4 SOPS members

have been exhaustively testing the satellite alongside SMC personnel.

The on-orbit operation started with a test of AEHF-2 as a single entity. Crews then cross linked the vehicle with AEHF-1 in an effort to study its advanced capabilities. Finally, opera-tors linked AEHF-2 with other satellites in the Milstar constellation as a means for gauging its effectiveness as part of the unit.

“With a pair of AEHF satellites on orbit, we can now offer higher data rates for users

via cross links between the satellites,” said Lt. Col. Alistair Funge, 4 SOPS director of operations. “Our crews and engineering sup-port staff also picked up valuable hands-on experience with AEHF-2 during the test-ing phase. They used the Advance Satellite Mission Control Subsystem and Space-Ground Links System to monitor the con-stellation and perform testing operations.”

As part of the brief ceremony, Ross in-formed the squadron that it officially held

responsibility for AEHF-2.“I want to thank 4 SOPS and SMC mem-

bers for their extraordinary teamwork and effort that made this not only a smooth transition but a successful test and check out of our newest next-generation asset,” Ross said.

Four satellites are currently planned to complete the AEHF constellation. The third vehicle is tentatively scheduled for launch in 2013.
