T h e Ta i r u a C a r e a n d Friendship Club has started its
Tuesday lunches again for the new year. For anyone new to town, the
Care and Friendship Club provides a hot lunch each Tuesday at
Tairua Community Hall, and provides an opportunity for social
contact for anyone feeling the need of company. T h i s C l u b h a
s b e e n i n existence for well over 30 years! What started as a
small group formed by a few local women to provide company, act iv
i t ies , a cuppa, and "friendship", has grown over the years to
include activities
and a delicious and varied meal provided for members. Volunteer
members of the Friendship Club form themselves into teams to
prepare and serve nourishing and delicious homemade meals each week
during the year. Their two course meals are provided for the guests
for just $8! Other Club volunteers provide a games session before
the Tuesday luncheon for those guests who would like to
participate. These activities include many of the old favourite
cards games, as well as other “parlour” games, all thoroughly
enjoyed
by those who attend. A Club spokesman, Peter Carverhill said the
Club is keen to point out that the Tuesday lunch gathering is open
to everyone. There is a misconception that the Care and Friendship
lunches are just for our older folk. Peter says anyone who would
like to enjoy a meal and company with others, lunch and a chit
chat, on a Tuesday is most welcome! The Care and Friendship Club
also serves another vital function for the town, that of providing
transport f o r m e d i c a l a n d o t h e r appointments. Over
the years the Club has fundraised for two vehicles to meet the
town’s mobility transport
needs and these vehicles are busy most days. Bookings
permitting, the Club is able to provide transport to and from the
luncheons for those who need it. T h e C l u b o p e r a t e s
through funding from grants, donations, and volunteers. It's
strength and success rely on community contribution and commitment.

Tairua Surf Lifesaving Club has had a great summer so far. Over
130 children, aged 6 to 14 years, participated in the Junior Surf
program over the Christmas and New Year period. This is a record
for the Club. On top of the great Junior Surf program, seven
members of the 14 to 16 years group recently passed their Lifeguard
award. The weekly Rippers program started last weekend and is open
to anyone aged be-tween 5-15 years old. The Rippers program covers
surf-lifesaving and learn-to-surf! The program runs from
11am-12.30pm every Sat-urday. Contact the Club for registrations,

Herit-age Society book launch and exhibition proved to be very
successful. The full colour book, “Buried But Not Forgotten: A
Record of the Tairua Historic Cemetery”, launched that weekend, is
now on sale at the Tairua Information Centre. One of the stand-out
items in the exhibition was a set of scales, standing about a metre
tall, used by the then local timber company. An impressive treasure
from Tairua's rich past.Pauanui Information Cen-tre is promoting
and selling tickets for the Lakes Resort Music Party Afternoon this
Saturday, 13 February. This fundraiser is to raise further funds
for trapping vermin in and around Lakes Resort. This is proving to
be a very successful programme with large numbers of native birds
returning to the Golf Course. Tickets are on sale from the Pauanui
Informa-tion Centre and the Lakes Resort Golf Shop at $30 per
adult, $20 per child under 15. Tickets are limited to 200 so don’t
delay!
