Rest assured that this is a normal situaon, and is in fact nature’s way of protecng the beach zone. According to TCDC’s coastal scienst, Jamie Boyle: "The current dune erosion is completely natural and the acve dune that has lost sand is doing exactly what it should What's happening to our beaches? be doing and providing a buffer for wave energy." The usual beach process is that over long periods of calm weather sand builds up on the beach and the dunes behind it. When storms occur, wave acon can erode both the beach and the dunes. This can happen over a few hours, leaving an ‘erosion scarp’, the near vertical cut into the dunes. The eroded sand is carried offshore into the surf zone, where it forms shallow bars that help absorb storm wave energy, beginning the first steps to recovery. Full beach and dune recovery, though, can take years. This is where we can assist nature a lile! Natural dune repair depends on a good cover of nave sand binding grasses, such as spinifex and pingao, which help trap moving sand. Trapping the sand allows the dunes to rebuild more rapidly, bringing our beach zones back to how we love them. In Pauanui, TCDC is encouraging everyone to get involved in the dune replanng programme taking place during September. Hikuai School will be out planting those sand binding grasses on Friday 4 September, and the community gets its chance on Saturday 12 September and Tuesday 29 September. TCDC's website has the details. Next time you head to the beach, remember, it's important to realise that dune repair, especially in places of replanting, works best in conjunction with zero foot traffic. You may have seen signs requesng that we sck to the paths already established - this allows the plants to take root and grow undisturbed so that they can eventually do their binding job. The Grady-White Tairua Boat Show drew crowds well over 5000 each weekend day of 8-9 August, including Petal and Dave Moran who are long-time bach owners in Tairua. Here they are aboard Orakei Marine's Jeannaeu Merry Fisher 795 Marlin, the new boat being used for the popular TV show"Fish of the Day." The Morans are well acquainted with all things "ocean", especially in the diving world. Previous owners of "Dive" magazine, Dave was recently made a Life Member of the NZ Underwater Association. Congratulations Dave!

248 Main Road, Tairuaon Saturday 15th August, 1.30pm.

Short & SweetHave you noticed the two village gardens on Tairua's Main Road? One is on the corner of Manaia Road, in front of Richardsons Real Estate, the other on the other side of Main Road in front of the Tairua Chi-ropratic Clinic. They have been funded as an RSA project. Recently some RSA members cleared out the old plants and applied mulch. Diane Bruce has now plant-ed seedlings. Diane is sure these seedlings will survive the cold weather and bring a welcome splash of colour in spring and early summer. Thanks to RSA and Diane for their great effort to keep our town looking attractive!Local Justices of the Peace have now set up their service desk at Tairua Library, operating on Fri-days from 11am to noon. If you need their services, but can’t make the service desk times, they are happy to see you at other times. Make contact with them by phone so that an appointment can be arranged. Contact num-bers can be found in the yellow pages section of the local phone book.Tairua Residents & Rate-payers Association is host-ing a “Meet the Candidates” for the Coromandel Parlia-mentary seat in the Tairua Community Hall on Sunday 23 August from 2pm. Con-firmed candidates attend-ing are Nathaniel Blomfield (Labour), Michael Egleton (New Conservative), Pame-la Grealey (Green Party), David Olsen (Act Party), and the Hon Scott Simpson MP (National). Other candidates have been invited but are still to confirm. Residents & Ratepayers chairperson, Jean McCann, hopes that people will attend this “per-fect opportunity to have your burning questions on current issues answered."

Congratulations to Stuart Arnold on the success of the “inaugural” Grady-White Tairua Boat Show. With only a short time available, this show was very well sup-ported by industry players, local organisations and the thousands of visitors who flocked in over the weekend to check out the latest in all things marine! Everyone spoken to hoped this would be the first of many such events.Tairua Senior B Rugby withdrew from the first round of the competition semi-finals on Saturday in def-erence to the tragedy that took the life of Tairua young man, Bayden Williams, last week. As a result, Coroman-del won the Morrissey Cup by default, leaving Tairua to contest the minor semi against Te Aroha’s Cobras this Saturday at home. The winner of this match will take on Coromandel in the finals! Tairua has comprehensively beaten Cobras before, but semi-finals rugby brings another level of commit-ment and intensity and we are sure to have a great battle to watch on Saturday. Get along to Cory Park Do-main to cheer on the team. Sideline support can lift the atmosphere - GO TAIRUA!Tairua St John is holding another Level One First Aid course in September. These courses help satisfy em-ployment suggestions that self-employed workers hold a current first aid certificate. They are very popular with everyone as they run over a Saturday, allowing those interested, to attend without compromising the working week or family responsibili-ties. Interested? Set aside Saturday 19 September, from 8.30am until 5pm. Email [email protected] to register your interest. Course cost is $100.
