Need for 3D Sketching

• 3D sketching is the quickest and easiest way to create parts which use a 3D

sweep path or a 3D guide curve where the path lies in multiple planes.

New 3D Sketching Tab on Ribbon

• A new tab has been added to the Synchronous Part and

Sheet Metal to support 3D Sketching.

• A new 3D Sketch command has been added to Ordered Part,

Sheet Metal, and Assembly that puts you in a new

3D Sketch mode.

3D Sketching Commands

• The 3D Sketch elements that can be created are:

• Lines

• Tangent Arcs

• Arcs by 3 points

• Circles by center point

• Rectangles by center point

• Fillets

• 3D Sketch elements can be trimmed using the Trim Command that is specific

for 3D Sketch elements.

3D Sketching Triad

• When creating 3D sketch elements, the alignment lines are displayed for all 3

axes and are color coordinated to match the coordinate system axes.

• Can be toggled on and off from the 3D Sketch command ribbon

• Aids you in creating 3D Sketch lines along a specific

axis of the selected coordinate system.

3D Sketching

• The command bar for the 3D Sketch line is similar to the 2D line command.

• The „Relative to‟ option is used to select a Coordinate System that will be

used to align 3D Sketch elements to.

• The Coordinate System in use is highlighted.

• The OrientXpres Tool is similar to the one used in Keypoint curve.

3D Sketching Intellisketch

• 3D Sketch elements can be locked to planes or faces, locked to keypoints,

locked to axes, or randomly drawn in 3D space.

• 3D Intellisketch is used to control what keypoints can be located when

creating 3D Sketch elements.

3D Sketching: Locking Axis

• Pressing the “Z” key forces a 3D Sketch Line to lock to a specified axis of the

active coordinate system.

• Pressing “Z” toggles between the 3 Axes

• An indicator near the cursor informs you which axis is locked.

• The OrientXpres triad will display only the locked axis.

• Only the alignment line associated with the locked axis is displayed.

• Pressing the “X” key forces a 3D Sketch Line, Rectangle, Circle or Arc to lock

3D Sketching Relationships

• 3D Sketches can be related to other geometry or to other

3D Sketch elements using the 3D Sketch relationships.

• Similar to 2D Sketch relationships

• You are given the option whether to display relationship handles on the

sketch geometry just like 2D sketches.

• The On Plane relationship is unique to 3D Sketches where you can force 3D

Sketch elements to be coplanar with a planar face or reference plane.

3D Sketching Project Keypoint Option

• In 3D Sketch commands, you can select a keypoint at its place or project it on

a sketch plane, using the Project Keypoint option.

When Project Keypoint is OFF,

the keypoint is located at its position.

As the keypoint is in a different plane

than the sketch plane, a 3D box is

shown as an indicator.

When Project Keypoint is ON, the keypoint is

projected on the sketch plane. As the

keypoint is on sketching plane, a 2D box is

shown as an indicator.

3D Sketching: 3D Include Command

• The 3D Include command can be used to copy 2D sketch elements,

3D sketch elements, and part edges into the active 3D sketch.

• The included elements are associative to the parent elements

and maintain their 3D position.

3D Sketching: Pathfinder Display

• The 3D sketch element style can be derived from Face Styles

or set in the element‟s command bar.

• 3D Sketches appear in their own collectors in the

PathFinder within the Synchronous Part, Sheet Metal

and in the Assembly.

3D Sketching: Pathfinder Display

• In Synchronous, all 3D Sketch elements are added to the active 3D Sketch.

• If a new sketch is required the

„New 3D Sketch„ command will create a

new 3D Sketch and make it active.

• A 3D Sketch can be made active by using the

„Activate‟ command in context menu.

• In Ordered, creating and editing the 3D Sketch

is similar to 2D Sketch.

3D Sketching: Edit

• Editing of 3D Sketch elements is similar to 2D Sketch elements.

• On selecting, elements can be edited by

• Using the Modify command bar(single element)

• Dragging the edit handles(single element)

• Using the Move command by using the

steering wheel (single or multiple elements)

• Relationships applied to the elements are

honored during editing.

3D Sketching: Dimensioning

• Existing Dimensioning commands will also dimension 3D Sketch elements.

• Smart Dimension

• True dimension is placed for a 3D Line by default.

• Projected dimensions can be placed similar to 2D sketches.

• Radius and Diameter can be placed for a 3D Arc or a 3D Circle.

• Distance Between

• True dimension is

placed on distance

between line by default.

• Projected dimensions can

also be placed similar to

2D sketches.

• Angle Between

• Angle dimension can be placed if the

two lines are coplanar.

3D Sketching: Usage

• Almost all commands that require a Sketch/Profile can use 3D Sketches.

• Following are some of the examples.

• Part - Extrude, Sweep, Extruded Surface, BlueSurf, Bounded etc.

• Sheet metal – Tab, Contour Flange, Dimple etc.

• Assembly - Assembly relationship commands, Drag and

Move components, Assembly feature commands etc.

• Routing – Tube, Piping Route, Frame etc.
