Dear Families: Last Sunday, this Sunday and the following, we will be proclaiming Chapter 13 of the Gospel of St. Matthew. Jesus spoke to his followers of many things in the form of parables e.g.: the Sower, the Wheat and the Tare; the Mustard Seed; and the Treasure Hidden in the Field. Through these stories, Jesus not only wanted to expose the mystery of the Kingdom of God, He also wanted to explain, to His disciples, the reason why the Kingdom of God had not yet fully manifested. This Sunday’s message emphasizes the growth of the Kingdom. The parable of the wheat and the tare presents a reality: there is much good in all of us and in society, but not all is perfect; there are always weeds. The Lord is patient with us. He continues to expect that one day we will understand and live by His gospel of love. The mustard seed and the leaven fermenting the dough explain the messianic impatience. The parable of the mustard seed stresses that the diminutive size of the seed does not limit the ultimate size of the plant. The parable of the leavening holds forth the notion that it takes only a tiny portion of leavening agent to cause the dough to rise. We can interpret this small seed and small amount of yeast as representing the capacity of love to transform people and the world.

Throughout our lives, we will experience these two conflicting forces: good vs. evil (the wheat and the tare); construction vs. destruction; love vs. hate. This dichotomy is pervasive, in our human existence. In this context, Jesus came to give us the hope of overcoming evil with good, hatred with love, and death with life. The parables of the leaven and the mustard seed invite us to hope. May we always grow in goodness. May God bless you. Fr. Celestino, Pastor

Queridas Familias: El domingo pasado, el presente y el próximo proclamaremos el capítulo 13 del evangelio de San Mateo. Jesús, rodeado de gente que quiere escucharle, les habló en parábolas de muchas cosas: la parábola del Sembrador, la del Trigo y la Cizaña, la del Grano de Mostaza, la del Tesoro Escondido en al Campo…A través de ellas, Jesús nos quiere exponer el misterio del Reino y explicar a los discípulos la razón por la que el Reino de Dios no ha aparecido todavía con toda su fuerza. El acento de este domingo se pone en el crecimiento del Reino. La parábola del trigo y la cizaña nos presenta una realidad: hay mucho de bueno en cada uno y en toda la sociedad, pero no todo es perfecto, siempre tenemos algo de cizaña. El Señor tiene paciencia con nosotros y no cesa de esperar que un día comprendamos y vivamos su evangelio de amor. El grano de mostaza y la levadura que fermenta la masa responden a la impaciencia mesiánica, y tienen el sentido de subrayar que la pequeñez no será impedimento para que crezca el árbol y la masa. Podemos interpretar esta pequeña semilla y esta poca levadura como el amor que es capaz de transformar las personas y el mundo. A lo largo de nuestra vida nos acompañarán estas fuerzas: el bien y el mal (el trigo y la cizaña); la construcción y la destrucción; el amor y el odio. Estas cosas son parte de nuestra existencia humana, pero, como ciudadanos del cielo, Jesús nos ha venido a dar la esperanza de la superación del mal a base del bien, del odio con el amor, de la muerte con la vida…Las parábolas de la levadura y la mostaza nos invitan a la esperanza. Revelation is the first “ongoing” study in The Great Adventure Bible Study Program. In this intriguing look at one of the most talked-about books

in Scripture, Jeff Cavins explores Revelation to demonstrate how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven, especially through the celebration of the Mass. With Fr. Robert returning from his vacation, we are going to continue right back where we left off on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., in Rooms A-1 & A-2. We look forward to seeing all those who were with us before and welcome newcomers.

2018 Synod of Bishops Preparatory Survey The Holy Father has called for a Synod of Bishops to be held in October of 2018. The theme of the Synod is "Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discern-ment." In anticipation of this historic gathering the Synod Office has developed an anonymous online survey for people between the focused age group of 16-29. The survey is an exciting opportunity for young people to cooperate directly with the Synod process, so they are encouraged to participate. National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty - The faithful are invited to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane in signing a national pledge to end the use of the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network's National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty was announced in Washington, D.C. As Chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Bishop Dewane was one of the first signatories who have committed to advocate, educate and pray for the end to the use of the death penalty. Pray for Kidnapped Priest - Father Tom was kidnapped in Yemen in March 2016. Father Uzhunnalil, an Indian national, was abducted March 4, 2016, when four gunman a Missionaries of Charity-run retirement home in Aden, Yemen, killing 16 people, including four Missionary Sisters of Charity. Since his kidnapping, photos and videos have appeared showing him in captivity, however, the authenticity is unclear. The most recent video was released in April 2017 in which Father Uzhunnalil asked for prayers and said he was in deteriorating health. Officials do believe Father Uzhunnialil is still alive. Please continue to pray for the safety and release of Father Uzhunnialil.

The dates highlight the anniversary of the Papal Encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. Natural Family is an umbrella term for certain methods used to achieve and avoid pregnancies.
