The six kilometre Rim Walk is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Depart early for Kings Canyon, stopping for breakfast at Kings Creek Station. Climb a 100 metre cliff and walk 6kms along the rim of the canyon for impressive views of grottos, chasms and cliffs. Deep between the sandstone cliffs is the Garden of Eden, a waterhole surrounded by exotic plants. For something more relaxing, set off on a two-kilometre stroll along the boulder-strewn creek bed that leads to impressive views of the canyon rim. To see the Canyon from above, take a helicopter flight (creek bed walkers only and own expense), or bring your swimmers for a dip in the pool.

Watch the spectacular sunrise over Kata Tjuta, with Uluru in the distance, from the western Dune Viewing Area. Then walk 6kms on uneven ground to the Valley of the Winds, heading first to the Karu lookout. Learn fascinating stories of the geology, history and culture of Kata Tjuta, which is deeply sacred to the local Anangu people. Next stop is the Karingana lookout, which takes you down into a timeless haven within the domes through trickling creek beds (a good level of fitness is required). Shorter walks are also available for those not wanting to walk to the second lookout.

Uluru Sunset

EARLYEVENING   Y11 Y11B

Sit back and relax as you travel into the amazing Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Along the way your Driver Guide will explain the geological and cultural history of the area. You may even see some native wildlife. As the sun sets over the western horizon you’ll arrive at the Kata Tjuta Dune Viewing Area. Marvel at the unique flora and admire the view of the central valley of the domes of Kata Tjuta as you take in a magnificent outback sunset while sipping sparkling wine and enjoying nibbles. Each passing minute brings something new as the domes continue to change colour with the setting sun.

Watch the first rays of the sun set Uluru and the Red Centre alight. After sunrise accompany your guide on the 10.5 kms walk around the entire base of Uluru. Start at Kuniya Piti, an Uluru sacred site and hear the Tjukurpa story (beliefs and law of the Anangu, the local Aboriginal people) of the Mala Men. Next up is the Mala Walk , which includes a visit into Kantju Gorge. Continue along the Lungkata Walk and then stop at the Mutitjulu Waterhole. Your guide will point out the natural features of the landscape, Aboriginal rock paintings and relay more traditional stories relating to this special place. Return to Kuniya Piti where you’ll board your coach and receive a certificate of your achievement! A good level of fitness is required for this day tour.

Visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. It houses an amazing collection of original paintings and punu (woodwork) that provides an insight into the unique culture of the Anangu (the local Aboriginal people). Travel around the base of Uluru. Learn about flora, fauna, and visit an array of sacred sites. At Mutitjulu Waterhole, you’ll explore a number of caves and view Aboriginal rock paintings as your guide interprets their meaning and significance. Later, travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area and relax with sparkling wine and enjoy nibbles as the setting sun changes the colour of the world's largest monolith.

Travelling towards Kakadu National Park, the Marrakai Plains will provide a beautiful backdrop for your onward journey. On arrival, visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre, where you’ll be introduced to the way of life of the Bininj people, traditional owners of this land. Join your local guide for a cruise on Yellow Water Billabong, home to hundreds of saltwater crocodiles and up to 60 species of colourful birdlife. Stop to enjoy lunch at Cooinda. Travel to the Nourlangie rock art site and take a walk with your Driver Guide around its base to see many different forms of Aboriginal rock art.

Your first stop is Batchelor, the gateway to Litchfield National Park. View the double waterfalls of Florence Falls from a high vantage point before making your way down to take a dip in the plunge pool below. There’s time for an interpretive walk through the scenic bush and monsoon vine forest. Continue to spectacular Tolmer Falls, home to several colonies of rare ghost and orange horseshoe bats. Enjoy lunch at Litchfield Café. Wangi Falls is the most accessible of rock pools and is the perfect place for you to take a final dip today. Visit Howard Springs Nature Park, a great place to see wildlife including turtles, barramundi and freshwater fish. Then stop for a photo at the Termite Mounds, standing upright like magnetic compasses.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit a modern-day Aboriginal community. It will provide you with an insight into the Tiwi people’s rich culture and lifestyle. The tour will reveal scenes seldom seen by many outsiders and will leave you with lifetime memories. Many cities are blessed with island destinations close by, but only Darwin has the Tiwi Islands.

• Take a 2½-hour cruise aboard the Tiwi Mantawi to Bathurst Island. You’ll be met by your local guide and taken on a journey through the progressive, modern day Aboriginal community of Wurrumiyanga

• Visit the Tiwi Museum with its interesting displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi ‘dreamtime’ stories, the Early Mission Precinct and its unique Tiwi-style Catholic Church

• Spend time with some Tiwi ladies while they work on their weaving and painting. Your guides and the ladies also demonstrate their totem dances and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors and explain the meanings behind them

• You’ll get the chance to sample local billy tea and damper with your lunch

• Visit the successful Arts & Crafts Centres and see where the artists work. You also can purchase Tiwi arts and crafts and screen-printed fabric at Island prices

• Learn some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukamani (burial ceremony)

• You’ll be transferred to the ferry landing to re-board your vessel, departing Bathurst Island for Darwin at 3.15pm

Cruise on the Adelaide River, home to over 1,600 crocodiles. View these prehistoric creatures up-close as your wildlife guide entices them to leap out of the water for a taste of buffalo meat. Learn about crocodile biology, territorial habits and their value to the eco system. You’ll also see an amazing array of native birdlife. Visit Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre and enjoy superb views across the floodplains. Interactive displays offer an insight into the ecological processes that occur in the wetlands. Visit Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, where the scenery is impressive, and as the wetlands recede, the dam becomes a birdwatcher’s delight. Because of its monsoon and eucalypt forest, melaleuca woodland and open water, the Reserve attracts a diverse range of reptiles, mammals and marsupials.

See the Botanic Gardens, the Chinese Temple, Stokes Hill Wharf area, the Mooring Basin and Darwin Aviation Museum. Tour the historic sites including the East Point Military Precinct. Join a city sights tour for the perfect introduction to Darwin, with expert commentary by a local guide. See the lush Botanic Gardens and the Chinese Temple, which was re-built after it was demolished by Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Tour the historic sites of the city including the East Point Military Precinct. See the Stokes Hill Wharf area, the Mooring Basin and Darwin Aviation Museum. There is also time available to explore the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, whose collections encompass Aboriginal art, visual arts, and Northern Territory history and natural sciences.

Head to the amazing Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge via the Adelaide River War Cemetery, where you’ll have time to stroll around the memorial. Afterwards, stop for morning tea (own expense). Next stop is beautiful Nitmiluk (previously known as Katherine Gorge National Park). At Leliyn (Edith Falls), take a swim in the waterhole beneath the falls, among the paperbark and pandanus trees (seasonal). Throughout the park you’ll see Aboriginal rock art that expresses in images this very deep spiritual culture. Enjoy lunch in the shaded outdoor setting of the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre, then take some time to browse through the Display Centre and Heritage Museum. The highlight of your day will be the Katherine Gorge cruise, that will put you at the heart of the spectacular deep sided gorge among freshwater crocodiles, wonderful bird life and some of the most amazing scenery that the Northern Territory has to offer.
