MAKE THE MOST OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR!

Parental withdrawal from children’s education is a big problem these days as increasingly parents are worn out from working

too hard or being involved in a variety of activities.

But the message for parents is clear – become involved in as many aspects as practical in your child’s education. Their

chances of success are better when kids see school as an extension of home rather than merely an institution for learning.

Positive parent participation demonstrates to children that you value learning and their school in particular. Children copy

many of their parents’ views so your positive attitude to school and learning is catching.

Make the most of the opportunities that schools offer to assist in the classroom including, hearing kids read, taking small

groups in elective activities and assisting children when writing stories.

Parent participation is much broader than helping out in the classroom. Hearing young learners read, helping with homework

and making sure kids go off to school happy, healthy and with plenty of sleep are important aids to learning.

Here are some more ideas to help you participate in your child’s education in positive ways:

Make sure your kids start each day well. That means they should get a good night’s sleep, have a healthy breakfast and

arrive at school on time with all their learning requirements as well as a healthy lunch.

Attend school activities such as open days, concerts, parent evenings, sports events and celebrations. Read the school

newsletter and other forms of communication so you can stay in the loop with what’s happening at your child’s school.

Consult with your child’s teacher about homework expectations and practical ways that you can assist both at home and at school. Each teacher has his or her own expectations about how you can help so make sure you work within their guide-

lines.

Find out what your school is trying to achieve for your child and show your support for its aims. Support a broad, balanced curriculum that offers children a variety of educational experiences rather than a program that focuses narrowly on the traditional 3 R’s. School discipline is always more effective when it’s supported by parents so be supportive of their attempts to promote good behavior in your child. Direct any problems or constructive criticism through the correct channels such as your child’s teacher, the principal or the school’s governing body. Gossip or thoughtless criticism within the general community can easily tarnish a school’s

reputation.

Become an advocate for your child’s school and promote its positive features throughout the wider community. Encourage

your child to take pride in their school through your example.

Positive parent participation in school and learning is a proven criterion for student success. One practical way to assist your

child as a learner is to become actively involved in his or her school-life.

Jubilee Primary School

Principal’s Weekly News

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2013 school year at Jubilee Primary School. A special welcome goes to all the families who are new to our great school. I hope that your association with Jubilee Primary School is a long and fruitful one, and that all families continue to be active members of our school community.

BEING A RESPONSIBLE DIGITAL CITIZEN

Over the past 3 days our Yrs 4, 5 & 6 students have been actively working and investigating what it means to have access to ‘Anywhere, Anytime Learning’ through our 1 to 1 Apple MacAir Program. I have had the privilege of rolling up my sleaves and getting into classrooms to teach about the importance of being a Responsible Digital Citizen. I will include this link to a YouTube Clip I used in my lesson for your information and use at home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-njh8mFvVk

It outlines in a very fun and engaging manner some of the main points we explored and interacted with.

I must state, that one of my fears at the moment, as it is with any new technology and/or software, is Instagram.

I thought that Instagram was just an app that you could download on your phone or tablet, but it is so much more! It seems to me, from my limited look at it, to be a new form of social media where some basic ‘traps’ for beginners lurk! The main being that anyone with an account can post photos of themselves or anything for that matter and unless you heighten the settings on your account, then the whole world can peer in and look.

Now whilst that sounds scary, and it is, this can be easily fixed by simply privatising your account so that only people who you know/allow can see/look at your pictures and comment/message you in relation to them. I can see the great benefits of such innovations, but as a parent, I must admit it is imperative that there are structures, rules and protocols set around the safe use and supervision of the work and activities engaged in.

I said to our students yesterday, that being in primary school through the early to mid 80’s that it was incomprehensible to picture the ability to be able to access information and learning in such dynamic and engaging ways as our children now can – and it is such a gift! As educators and parents we need to keep an ever present supportive eye out for our precious ones as we all learn to embrace the global world that we are moving in to.

PARENT TEACHER EVENING Our annual Parent Teacher Information Evening will be held next week (Week 3) on Monday, February 11, 2013. Class Teachers across all year levels will be holding 3 identical sessions simultaneously on the evening, so as to cater for families with multiple children attending Jubilee. The session times for the evening will begin at: 5pm, 5.45pm and 6.30pm.

These evenings are designed as information sharing evenings regarding routines, expectations and class procedures. If you feel that you require time to discuss your child individually with their class teacher, this evening is not designed for this! Rather, make an appointment with your child’s class teacher

for a more appropriate time, where due consideration and time can be given to such a conversation.

I look forward to seeing you all there on the night!

SCHOOL FEES We as a school community are fully aware of the financial pressures that face all families and that these pressures seem to be getting greater all the time. The rising costs of goods and services, the current economic crisis, the lack of work for tradies on the Coast and the like are realities that we all have to face, as a business or as a family. We hope to again bring further stability in this area during 2013 for our Jubilee families. We have attempted to keep fees to a minimum.

Rest assured that we will continue to provide quality facilities and resources for children and staff at the school and will continue to strive to manage our financial resources in a responsible manner. I am indebted to the families of our school who pay their school fee accounts on time. School fee accounts for term one will be issued shortly and families are asked to pay these accounts by the due date on the statement.

There are still a number of families who have substantial outstanding accounts. Letters will be sent to these families this month detailing Jubilee’s practice of using a debt collecting agency to recover these outstanding fees. This practice enabled us to retrieve a large sum of outstanding fees in 2012.

Enacting a debt collection agency will not apply for:

Families who make an appointment to see me and arrange a payment plan.

Apply for or renew their concession before the end of week 4.

For any other family who does have outstanding fees, Jubilee’s debt collection agency will be commissioned. This will also increase the outstanding amount considerably. Bottom line: Please come and see me if you are having or foresee financial difficulties. We are a Christian School and will be empathetic and supportive. We are also a business that cannot and will not absorb the cost of illegitimate fee avoidance.

ASSEMBLY Starting last Friday with our Opening School Worship, our whole school assemblies at Jubilee will continue to take place on Friday afternoons from 2:15pm – 3pm. This weekly assembly will be held in the Jubilee Centre and all parents are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend. In saying this, can I please implore you NOT to park in the ‘Kiss and Go’ lane ever, but particularly during assembly time. I would greatly appreciate your assistance and common sense with this request.

JUBILEE SWIMMING CARNIVAL Our annual swimming carnival for Years 3 – 7 is being held at Southport Aquatic Centre at Marine Pde, Southport on Friday, February 22, 2013. Please refer to the notice which was sent home with students yesterday for further details.

SOMERSET LITERATURE FESTIVAL Jubilee Primary School will be participating in the 2013 Somerset Literature Festival. It is a festival held by Somerset College at Mudgeeraba and it provides

students with a unique experience in working with and listening to world renowned children’s authors. There will be an additional financial cost to this experi-ence. Over the past 5 years many of our classes have participated. This experience is not one that is included in the budget provision for 2013. A note with greater detail will be issued closer to the date.

2013 STUDENT LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

I would like to congratulate the following Year 7 students who will fulfil Leadership roles at Jubilee in 2013;

School Captains: Sage Middleton, Ethan Lawson

School Vice Captains: Chloe Browne, Adam Tighe

Sadik House Captains: Laura Alcott, Rhiannon Newman, Jackson Armstrong, Nicholas Mcleod

Smith House Captains: Maya Costello, Jade Kahika, Noah Taylor, Cooper Leitch

Hefferan House Captains: Tabitha Parsons, Gabrielle Scott, Riley Glasgow, Sam Bowen

Stenlake House Captains: Mia Hegarty, Bethany Smith, Mitchell Radford, Ray Levinge

Further details to follow shortly on when these presentations will occur at the “Leadership Assembly”.

MOBILE PHONES

I would like to take this opportunity to outline that children are not permitted to bring mobile phones to school. If a child does bring a mobile phone to school, they need to bring it to the front office where it will be kept all day. Children will be able to pick it up at the end of the day.

CAN YOU HELP???

I have a family who is in need of your assistance! Due to work commitments, this family is looking for assistance with baby-sitting (for two children: boy – 7yrs & girl 9yrs) on Sunday’s. The hours will tend to vary, but the family is at a loss.

If you feel you might be able to assist, please contact me and I can organise further conversation.

A Worrying Woman, By Orison Swett Marden

"I'm awfully worried this morning, said one woman. What is it?" "Why, I thought of something to worry about last night,

and now I can't remember it."

A famous actress once said: "Worry is the foe of all beauty." She might have added: "It is the foe to all health."

"It seems so heartless in me, if I do not worry about my children," said one mother.

Women nurse their troubles, as they do their babies. "Troubles grow larger," said Lady Holland, "by nursing."

"He grieves," says Seneca, “more than is necessary, who grieves before it is necessary."

"My children," said a dying man, "during my long life I have had a great many troubles, most of which never happened." A prominent businessman in Phila-delphia said that his father worried for twenty-five years over an anticipated misfortune, which never arrived. We try to grasp too much of life at once; since we think of it as a whole, instead of living one day at a time. Life is a mosaic, and each tiny piece must be cut and set with skill, first one piece, then another. It is not the troubles of today, but those of tomorrow and next week and next year, that whiten our heads, wrinkle our faces, and bring us to a stand still. Nervous prostration is seldom the result of present trouble or work, but of work and trouble anticipated. Mental exhaustion comes to those who look ahead, and climb mountains before reaching them. Resolutely build a wall about today, and live within the enclosure. The past may have been hard, sad, or wrong, - but it is over. Why not take a turn about? Instead of worrying over unforeseen misfortune, set out with all your soul to rejoice in the unforeseen blessings of all your com-ing days. "I find the gayest castles in the air that were ever piled," says Emerson, "far better for comfort and for use than the dungeons in the air that are daily dug and cavern out by grumbling, discontented people." What is this world but as you take it? Thackeray calls the world a looking glass that gives back the reflection of one's own face. "Frown at it, and it will look sourly upon you; laugh at it, and it is a jolly companion." THOUGHT OF THE WEEK How we perceive a situation and how we react to it is the basis of our stress. If you focus on the negative in any situation, you can expect high stress levels. However, if you try and see the good in the situation, your stress levels will greatly diminish. WELCOME BACK Greetings and Happy New Year to you all. We’ve had a very positive start to the 2013 school year -thanks for sending your children back so ready and well prepared. That positive start was completed last Friday afternoon with a very meaningful opening school worship, organised by our new APRE Jo Riddell. We’ve welcomed many new students and their families and also some returning and new staff members, including Jo, and I am sure that they will all bring some wonderful gifts to our community. NEW BEGINNINGS

Our new Preps have settled in well already and it’s great to see the gleam in their eyes and their huge smiles each day. At the other end of the spectrum, our Yr 7 students have made a positive start and are very enthusiastic about being our student leaders this year. Our Yrs 1, 2 & 3 are now established in their new classroom locations and look ready for a good year ahead. Last week our Yrs 4 & 5 students received their new Mac computers and, with our Yr 6 students leading the way as our ground-breaking group from last year, they commence their 1-1

laptop program in earnest this week.

POSITIVE PARTNERSHIPS

As Leadership Team mentors this year, Jo and I will be working closely with our teachers, students and parents with regard to teaching and learning, behavioural issues and support and pastoral care. Jo is the mentor for Yrs P-3 and I am the mentor for Yrs 4-7. As parents, your first port-of-call for all matters relating to your child’s schooling and well-being should be the class teacher and good open communication between home and school is the key to a positive partnership. That said, Jo and I will be available to support your child, your child’s teacher and you as appropriate throughout the year. We look forward to meeting or catching up with many of you at this Friday’s P&F Welcome Barbecue and this coming Monday’s Parent Information Evening. In his letter last week, Dave gave you all some important reminders about student punctuality, parking, traffic-flow and drop-off/pick-up arrangements at the school. It is vital to the safety of our students and the smooth operation of our systems that we have your support and co-operation with regard to these.

I look forward to a very productive and enjoyable school year ahead.

Cheers,

Brian Mason

APA

Welcome back to 2013. The children have returned to school with enthusiasm and energy and it has been wonderful to see their happy smiling faces. I have enjoyed meeting many of you over the last week and hope that you will continue to introduce yourself to me over the next few weeks.

Last Friday saw the opening school worship for the year. At this celebration we gathered to commemorate the beginning of a new school year, and to welcome new members to our community. The theme of this worship was… We Walk In Faith, Love and Unity.

Reverend Lyn Dunn, minister of the Anglican community spoke to us about the importance of sharing love in our community and about having faith in each other. When we show we have faith in each other and treat each other with love, we can walk together with unity. We look forward to walking together with you and your child on their faith journey, here at Jubilee.

Yours in Faith

Swimming Lessons at Bergman’s Swim Centre commenced today for our grade 3 and 4 students. Year 5,6 and 7 students will commence their program on Thursday this week. All children in Years 3-7 will complete a seven week program this Term and with the Jubilee Swimming carnival just around the corner it is a great time to develop a greater sense of water safety and confidence in the aquatic environment. Parents and children are reminded that swimming caps must be worn during lesson times. Please be ready with all your gear on the day of your lesson. Jubilee Primary Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 22/02/13 at The Southport Aquatic Centre. This carnival is for Years 3-7 students and all races will be contested in year of birth competitions. This year students born between 2000 and 2005 will compete for house points in 50 and 25m races as well as some novelty events and combination relays. We look forward to this very exciting day on the school calendar and I am most excited about all 364 students from grades 3-7 competing in as many events as possible. General information, entry forms and permission slips will have arrived home already, so please return completed forms to school by Monday 11 th February. District Swimming Trials will be held at Runaway Bay Super Sports Centre on Wednesday 13th February. Any children who can demonstrate they have attained the qualifying times (see Mr Davies for these) are invited to enter.

Running Club will commence on Friday 15th February at 7.35 am and on subsequent Wednesday’s and Friday’s except when carnivals or other school commitments take priority. Congratulations to Cooper Leitch on his selection to the Gold Coast Futsal (Indoor Soccer) rep team. Cooper was one of 8 selected in the final team and has spent much of the past few months training and competing at various venues around Queensland. Cooper has shown he has a great aptitude for goal scoring and has hit the back of the net many times over Summer. Well done Cooper and all the best as you pro-gress in this exciting sport. Congratulations to Cameron McLeod on his recent fun run result. Cameron competed in the Coomera Park Run where he finished finished 26th out of 70 runners. Cameron has only just started running and this result was against adults as well as older students. Fantastic work Cameron. Good luck in your next running challenge.

Sports Funding Possibilities: The government has announced sports funding assistance for things like sports registrations for families in certain circumstances. I have included the web site for those who may qualify or perhaps be interested. http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding/index.html Year 5, 6 and 7 School Sport (winter competitions) commence later this Term. Dates, sports offered and selection details will appear in the newsletter 26th February. Watch this space.

Lunch time sports equipment: Thank you to all students for a wonderful start to the school year. For those of you who may have forgotten; all grass sport gear on the oval (footballs, soccer balls and touch footballs) go in the white mesh bags provided and all BCA balls (basketballs, netballs and soft volleyballs) go in the black bags. Tennis Court and Hall Sports equipment needs to be returned to the plastic bins provided.

School Sports tops 2012: There are still a couple of athletic/sports tops outstanding from last year. Please check your cupboards for any items that should be back at Jubilee.

District Sports Trials 2013: During the course of the year, various representative trials are held throughout the Gold Coast North District. To attend these trials you need to be sent along by your school. In many cases this is simple as students present as obviously skilful and worthy of sending along. However, as we all know, there is much more to the selection than just skill. As I enter my third year as Physical Education and Sports Coordinator, I am becoming more aware of students and their abilities and interests across a wide variety of sports. This of course doesn’t account for new students, those whose skills and fitness have improved dramatically and those who for various reasons should really be able to attend such trials.

So that I may be totally fair to all students as well as realistic about the numbers of students I am indeed allowed to send along to various trials for 2013, I would like to approach the 2013 District Trial procedure in this manner.

Dates made available on newsletters leading up to trials

Dates of trials advertised in Hall

Letters of recommendation from coaches, indicating ability to attend District Trials

Recommendations from any staff members as to student’s ability

Communicating with Mr Davies, a desire to attend any trials as they arise This is the pathway I believe will give many deserving students an opportunity to experience District Trials and hopefully an avenue to even more opportunities. The District Trial pathway is certainly not the only measure of sporting achievement, it is merely one we have available to us in our Education System. Other forms of talent identification take place throughout the year and I am very enthusiastic about the wide range of programs that we offer at Jubilee for all children.

All the best to all sporting individuals, teams and various training groups during 2013. Yours in HPE and Sport;

Alistair Davies

WELCOME/WELCOME BACK – We have kicked off the new school year and are enjoying meeting all our new families and having our ‘old’ families back!

OSHC and P&F WELCOME NIGHT – We are really happy to be a part of this event this year; OSHC will be open from 5.00pm – 7.00pm and all visitors are welcome, enrolled at OSHC or not, to come up, have a look around, meet some of the staff and ask any questions you may have.

FEE CHANGES – 2013 has seen some fairly significant fee changes for OSHC, the most significant being that we now charge 2 weeks in advance, Casual care is charged if cancelled, and fees are also still charged in the event of illness and public holidays. All families received the letter detailing all these changes from Centacare Child Care Services Director Alana Crouch with your 2013 Enrolment pack.

Have a great week
