Dear Parents, Staff and Friends,

Monday, May 20, 2013 is Jubilee Day.

This date commemorates the four founding Pastors of Jubilee Primary School:

Reverend Gerard Hefferan – Parish Priest, St Mary’s Catholic Community, Oxenford Parish;

Pastor Brian Sadik – Apostolic Church (Australia) – Gaven

Reverend Gary Smith – Priest in Charge, Gold Coast North Anglican Church

Reverend Evan Stenlake – Minister, Uniting Church in Australia, Coomera-Helensvale Linked Congregations

signing the Local Covenant. This document bound the churches who had signed it, to working together Ecumenically through Faith, Learning and Unity.

Part 1 of the document is a declaration of Intent.

Part 2 is a pledge.

Part 3 are three statements that articulate what these churches agree to.

This document can be found in the foyer of the Jubilee Administration Office and you are encouraged to have a read next time you are in! It is an impressive document and it challenges our churches to enter into a highly visible and active participation in the Religious Life of our great school.

There is one slight hitch currently. The current Covenant Churches are either not the same as the ones on the Local Covenant and the Ministers have changed.

At our upcoming Jubilee Day celebrations on Monday, May 20, 2013 (of which details will be forthcoming from Mrs Joanne Riddell – APRE) part of the celebration will include a Commitment and Signing Ceremony where our five current Local Covenant Churches will publically commit to the Local Covenant and sign an agreement that documents this commitment. This new document will signify that our current Local Covenant Churches will work together as articulated in the original Local Covenant. It will hold the original Local Covenant as the central strategic document that drives how our Local Covenant Churches work together Ecumenically. It will be a very visible ‘touchstone’ for our Jubilee School Community – A Living Vision of Local Churches.

Jubilee Day will also include a number of fun and religious activities. These will serve to celebrate that very humble little group of Ministers and their work, that has now turned into a very well known school and institution on the Northern end of the Gold Coast. I am sure that Gerry, Evan, Gary and particularly Brian (deceased) re so proud of what their Vision has now become!

I ask that you date claim Monday, March 20, 2013 in your calendars, as this will be a very significant day and celebration in our 2013 school year.

STAFFING NEWS

This Term, we welcome back Mrs Lenai Brittian, who took some well earned Long Service Leave in Term 1. I would like to thank Miss Alisa Remeikis for her efforts in teaching 2U during Lenai’s absence.

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY

The Jubilee ANZAC Day Ceremony will be held next Wednesday 24.04.13 from 9am at the Jubilee War Memorial just off the bottom oval. All parents and friends of the Jubilee School Community are warmly invited to join us in this most important and significant event in the school calendar.

WAIT ‘TIL YOUR (FIFO) FATHER GETS HOME

I know a number of you here at Jubilee are grappling with this family dynamic and from the stories I hear you are all doing a great job. This article has found it’s way into my section because I have NO idea of how advise any of you as to how you cope with this dynamic. I saw this in Michael’s newsletter inserts and I thought it may prove beneficial to some of you.

More and more families are adjusting to life in which one parent has a ‘Fly-In, Fly-Out’ job. The money is good, but the hard part is keeping everyone grounded, writes Karen Fontaine:

Principal’s Weekly News

Page 3: 34 Manra Way, Pacific Pines 4211 Jubilation 1.pdf · 34 Manra Way, Pacific Pines 4211 PO Box 486, ... the stores discount all the chocolate eggs and ... Jubilee Day will also include

Parenting can be challenging when both parents are present and accounted for week in, week out. However, for an increasing number of Australian families, one parent keeps the home fires burning while the other flies out for weeks away from home followed by the decompression chamber that is reentry into domestic life.

“Like many countries, Australia has always had itinerant workers such as shearers, truck drivers and oil riggers, but the mining boom means that more everyday mums and dads who don't necessarily come from itinerant working families are working away,” says Angie Willcocks, an Adelaide-based psychologist who counsels FIFO families.

Of course, the pitfalls of a FIFO work roster, common in the resources and construction sectors, are manifold.

For starters, it’s a schizophrenic-style existence for everyone. One month, it’s mum plus the kids and their routine. The next month, Dad’s back on home turf and often it might take him days to successfully reenter the family dynamic. It might take the kids even longer.

Resentments can simmer, tempers can flare, tiredness takes its inevitable toll and parental pining (Dad for the kids, Mum for Dad, the kids for Dad) is par for the course.

At Edith Cowan University, Jacinth Watson, a PhD student from the Child Health Promotion Research Centre, is investigating the effect that a parent’s FIFO employment has on the health and wellbeing of their adolescent children.

Jacinth said the FIFO work roster was a relatively recent phenomenon and it remained to be seen how regular and lengthy absences of a parent affected their adolescent’s capacity to be resilient.

“We want to know if adolescents who live in FIFO families adapt to the absence of the parent and

become more self reliant, develop higher levels of self esteem and have increased capacity to be

resilient,” she said. “Or is the absence of the parent a disruptive effect on the adolescent, making it more

difficult for them to cope with other challenges in their life?”

Results of Jacinth’s study have found:

73.5 per cent of adolescents are sad when the FIFO parent returns to work;

43.1 per cent felt nervous or anxious when the FIFO parent returns to work;

45.6 per cent worry about the FIFO parent’s safety at work;

86.8 per cent communicate with their FIFO parent (when the parent is at work). The telephone is the most frequent

means of communication for the FIFO parent and adolescent, with email (84.3 per cent) SMS (34.5 per cent) and Facebook (25.8 per cent) also used.

For Perth-based Nicole Ashby, whose husband Joe works four weeks on an offshore oil rig followed by four weeks “being a happy house-husband”, FIFO life is hard but manageable for their children Tana, seven, Chase, five, and Angelina, three.

“Kids find it easier to adapt to the situation when things such as their routine don’t change too much when the FIFO parent comes home,” says Nicole, who set up www.fifofamilies.com.au because of what she identified as a real need in the community.

As Nicole points out, “there is an opportunity cost for everything and for every family” – even for those where one or both parents works long hours in the city.

And although Jacinth notes that companies are providing increased support to families – including counseling, social support and ‘health days’ – she hopes her study and similar works will spawn more family- friendly rosters.

“More equal time rosters are best,” she says. “Four weeks on, one off rosters and three weeks on, one

off are not particularly good.”

Angie Willcocks, resident psychologist for Mining Family Matters (www.miningfm.com.au),

offers tips for making FIFO work with kids:

Page 4: 34 Manra Way, Pacific Pines 4211 Jubilation 1.pdf · 34 Manra Way, Pacific Pines 4211 PO Box 486, ... the stores discount all the chocolate eggs and ... Jubilee Day will also include

1. Set shared goals. “First and foremost, it's really important to be clear why you are going to work FIFO and setting

clear goals around this. It's not enough to say ‘to get ahead financially’ – they need to make specific goals and stick to these. Individuals and couples who really struggle are those who have no idea why they're working away and

who feel stuck in the working-away lifestyle. Those who do well know why they're doing it and work together for shared goals. This helps work together when things are tough such as when you’re both tired.”

2. Be positive and proactive. “Recognise your strengths and weaknesses and work on what you can. Work on problems together as a couple by identifying problems as being about working away rather than blaming each other – for

example, say to each other ‘we haven't been spending enough time together as a family because of FIFO – so how can we work on this?’"

3. Don't dwell on the negatives. “Face the problems head on and don't dwell on the downsides.”

4. Be interested in your partner's life. “Whether or not you're the at-home or away partner, make sure you're keen to

know what goes on. Organise a site visit if possible, or get pictures of what the donga is like. Also, create shared interests so you have something other than the 'groundhog day' to talk about. For example, read the same books or

watch the same movies or work on a project you can discuss while apart.”

5. Stay united when it comes to issues about the kids.

6. “Be clear about rules and expectations and discipline styles for the kids. Lots of parents have differing expectations

for their kids but this can become a really major problem when one person works away – this has to be worked on for the sake of the kids.”

Welcome back,

Greetings from Lake Ainsworth ! We had a brilliant first day on camp, which started from the outset with everybody being at school on time and ready to go. After a smooth trip down we settled into our cabins and had an orientation tour of the camp facilities, which are awesome. After a great lunch (chicken wraps) we set of for our first activity - Marine Studies - in near perfect weather. This involved a 25 minute beach walk followed by a great session of snorkelling over rocks at Lennox Head. The water was crystal clear and a good temperature, so we all had a ball! After the walk back we showered and had some play time on the courts before dinner. Our evening activities involved a series of partner games, such as Finger Fencing, Toe Tag and a team game that pitted the girls against the boys. Our day ended with supper and some video time before retiring to our cabins for a good night's sleep. Having a great time - bring on Day 2 !

Have a great Week 1 everyone !

Cheers, Brian Mason, APA

Jo’s APRE Weekly News

Welcome back to Term 2, I hope you all enjoyed the opportunity to refresh and recharge with your children, I know I certainly did. No school lunched for 2 weeks is the best Easter gift ever.

As a school community we will gather together on Thursday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. This will be in the Jubilee Centre and will be hosted by the Gold Coast North Anglican Church.

One of the greatest privileges about being an ecumenical school is the way in which we can celebrate our Christian Faith. Throughout this term each of our the Churches associated with our school will host different events to celebrate the Religious Life of the School. As always parents and carers will be invited to these events.

Easter Celebration – Thursday 18th

April

On Thursday at 9am Revs John Dougherty and I will lead a Communion service in the Jubilee Centre for all the students in grade 1-7. This will be a celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. Anyone who normally receives Holy Communion in his or her own church (whatever denomination) are welcome to receive Communion or receive a blessing.

Learning Enhancement News

Hello! My name is Amber Vague and I am the new Learning Enhancement Teacher at Jubilee Primary School. In this role, I will be working with students in Years 1, 2 and 3 to improve reading skills.

As a parent, you can do many things at home to help develop your child’s reading skills. Reading aloud to children is extremely beneficial and can help develop their love of reading. Reading should be fun, exciting and enjoyable for you and your child. Be sure to use books that are age appropriate that your child can enjoy and understand. One important aspect of reading aloud is discussing what is read with your child. This helps them to learn to read and understand the words on the page.

Here are some suggestions for giving and getting the most out of read-aloud sessions with your child.

Read to your child every day.

Try to find a regular time and a quiet, comfortable place for reading together.

Turn off other distractions, such as the television.

Read slowly enough so that your child has time to take in the story and look at the pictures.

Children may enjoy holding the book or turning the pages. Invite your child to point to words on the page or help you read the words. Explain unfamiliar words.

Read with expression. Try creating different voices for different characters.

Encourage your children to ask questions about the characters, pictures, and words.

Talk about the story with your child. Did he or she like it? Why?

Your child may want you to read the same story over and over again. After several retellings, ask your child to tell you the story.

Older children enjoy reading aloud, too. They can read their favourite parts, or you can take turns reading chapter books.

I look forward to working with students and parents to ignite a lifelong love of reading!

Amber Vague Learning Enhancement Teacher
