Fields OF Fire hisTOriCal & desigNer’s NOTes Your Mission:To close with the enemy by means of fire and maneuver in order to destroy or capture him, or repel his assaults by fire, close combat and counterattack. US Army Field Manual FM 7-10: The Infantry Rifle Company. History 9th US Infantry Regiment, “Manchus”The 9th US Infantry Regiment was first formed in January 1799 in Maryland and disbanded in 1800. It was reformed from March 1812 through March 1815 and served in action at York, Fort George, Sackett’s Harbor, Chrysler’s Field, Fort Erie and the Chip-pewa River. The regiment was reformed again in April 1847 for the Mexican War, during which it served at Padiema, Churubusco and Chapultepec. During the storming of Chapultepec the regimental commander, Colonel Truman Ransom, was killed. The regiment was again disbanded in 1848.
Reconstituted for the last time in 1855, the 9th was shipped out west. It appears that it was mostly integrated with the 18th Infantry and was credited during the Civil War with service at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and Atlanta. After the Civil War, the 9th headed further west, where it participated in the Little Big Horn Campaign. Service in the West continued until 1892 when the regi-ment was moved to Madison Barracks, New York. Its next action was in 1898 when the regiment shipped out to Cuba, landing at Siboney on June 24, 1898. The 9th participated in the storming of San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. The regiment then returned to Madison Barracks, but for only six months, when it was off to the Philippines to deal with the insurrection. The 9th fought on Luzon for over a year when the rebels finally surrendered in their area.
Trouble then erupted in China: the Boxer Rebellion. Two US regi-ments, the 9th and the 14th were dispatched to join the effort to pro-tect US interests there. On July 13, 1900, the 9th assaulted Tientsin. In a desperate action the regimental commander, Colonel Emerson Liscum, was mortally wounded. As he lay dying, he exhorted the men to “keep up the fire!” Colonel Liscum’s final words became the regimental motto. The 9th was the first unit to fight its way into the Forbidden City in Peking and for this the regiment was awarded the honorary title of “Manchus.” The other regiment, the 14th, was giv-en the title of “Golden Dragons” which, like “Manchus,” is still in use today. After the Boxers were defeated in 1901, the 9th returned to the Philippines and fought insurgents on the island of Samar until May 1902, after which the “Manchus” returned home.
When the US entered World War I in 1917, the 9th began its as-sociation with the 2nd Infantry Division “Indianhead.” In October 1917, the “Manchus” went into the line and earned battle streamers for Aisne, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine, Ile de France, St. Mihiel and Aisne-Mame. In 1918, the regiment was awarded the French Four-ragere for gallantry during the Meuse-Argonne offensive.Following World War I, the 9th returned to Texas and rotated among posts there until World War II. In October 1942 the 9th moved to Ft McCoy, WI, for intensive training for a year before sailing to Ireland. The “Manchus” landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day+1, June 7, 1944. The 9th participated in five campaigns with three major combat actions: The Normandy Campaign, the Storming of Brest and the Battle of the Bulge – including a Medal
of Honor for a bazooka gunner that would not quit. The “Man-chus” ended the war just outside of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. The 9th earned three Presidential Unit Citations, returning to the US in July of 1945, and rotating among Texas, New York and Washington State.
The invasion of South Korea in June of 1950 found the 9th as the lead element of the 2nd Infantry Division, pushed into the desperate defense of the Pusan Perimeter in August of 1950. The “Manchus” fought their way to the Naktong River and then suffered the brunt of the last major North Korean offensive on August 31st – Sep-tember 3rd. The battered regiment counter-attacked and over the following days recaptured the lost ground. The “Manchus” would stay on the offensive until November 25, 1950, when a massive Chinese attack decimated the regiment at the Chongchon River and during the subsequent retreat through the “Gauntlet” of Kunu-ri. In the fighting, the 1st Battalion was completely lost and the 2nd and 3rd battalions each lost over half their strength.
After being reorganized and refitted, the 9th participated in the hill battles – “Bloody Ridge,” “Heartbreak Ridge,” “Old Baldy,” and “Pork Chop Hill.” The regiment remained in Korea until 1955 and when it was designated to go to Alaska.
The Pentomic Division organization eliminated the regimental structure in use during WWII and Korea in 1957. The regiment was re-designated the First Battle Group, 9th “Manchu” Infantry, at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.
The Pentomic experiment did not last long and was replaced with the ROAD (Reorganization Objective Army Divisions) organiza-tion in early 1963. This was a concept based on the experience of Armored Divisions from WWII, of brigades comprised of inter-changeable battalions. Battalions would retain regimental designa-tions, and under the plan, five battalions of the 9th Infantry were formed. Two were in the Army Reserve (3/9 and 5/9). 1/9 and 2/9 were part of the reactivated 2nd Infantry Division, Ft. Benning, Georgia, and 4/9 was at Ft. Wainwright.
In 1966, 4/9 was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division “Tropic Lightning,” and shipped out to Vietnam. The 4/9 “Man-chus” were in Vietnam for four and a half years, operating out of Cu Chi and Tay Ninh, northwest of Saigon.
Today, 1/9, 2/9 and 4/9 are part of the 2nd Infantry Division in Ko-rea and the USA. 1/9 deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 4/9 in 2007 so the tradition of the “Manchus” lives on. For a more detailed history see www.manchu.org. Campaigns WWII, Normandy, France June 8th – August 16th, 1944The 9th Infantry Regiment was organized as follows:
Colonel Chester J. Hirschfield, CommandingColonel Hirschfield earned two Distinguished Service Cross awards commanding the Manchus during the Normandy campaign to go with the first award he earned in WWI.

1st Battalion, Lt. Col. H. K. Wesson, commanding (KIA Oct 15th 1944)
• Rifle companies: A (Able), B (Baker), C (Charlie)• Heavy weapons company: D (Dog) (8xHMGs, 4x81mm mortars)
2nd Battalion, Lt. Col. Walter M. Higgins, commanding• Rifle companies: E (Easy), F (Fox), G (George)• Heavy weapons company: H (How)
3rd Battalion, Lt. Col. P. V. Tuttle, commanding• Rifle companies: I (Item), K (King), L (Love)• Heavy weapons company: M (Mike)
The 2nd Infantry Division was organized as follows: The 2nd Infantry Division consisted of the 9th, 23rd, and 38th Infantry Regiments. The Division had the 12th (155mm), 15th (105mm), 37th (105mm), and 38th (105mm) Field Artillery Bat-talions with the 15th (Lt. Col. Cassibry, commanding) in direct sup-port of the 9th. The division also had a combat engineer and recon company. The US V Corps had many field artillery battalions avail-able as well. Armored support came from the 741st Tank Battalion (Lt. Col. Robert W. Skaggs, commanding) and the 612th Tank Destroyer Battalion (Lt. Col. Joseph M. Deeley, commanding). Each battalion had three companies of 17 vehicles (M4 Shermans for the tank battalions and M10 Tank Destroyers for the 612th). Air defense was provided by the 462nd AAA Battalion (Lt. Col. Nor-man R. Stultz, commanding). The 462nd was equipped with three batteries of quad .50 cals.
The 2nd Infantry Division participated in five campaigns, spent 337 days in action, and covered 1,750 miles from Omaha Beach to Pilsen. It suffered 15,066 battle casualties, including 2,999 killed (of which 879 were Manchus), and 10,924 wounded. 2nd Infantry Division Normandy Campaign Timeline:
• June 7th: Began landing • July 11th – 12th: Hill 192 Offensive• July 13th – 25th: St. Germain d’Elle-Le Croix Rouge-Le
Soulaire Defensive• July 26th – August 7th: Vire Offensive• August 8th – August 16th: Tinchebray Offensive
That was a total of 70 days in the line, in contact with the enemy. The division was given four days rest and recovery before being committed to the Brest Offensive.
The Trevieres Strongpoint was the first action for the “Manchus” in Normandy. The position was held by elements of the 352nd Infantry Division’s Anti-Tank Battalion with three batteries of PAK40 75mm guns, and the 517th Battalion of the LXXXIV (84) Corps’ 30th Schnelle Brigade (Mobile Brigade). This was a light infantry battalion moving, it appears, by bicycle. The other two bat-talions went off to face the British. There may have been elements of II/915th Infantry, 352nd Infantry Division as well as some of the Divisional Pioneer (Combat Engineer) Battalion. Artillery sup-port was provided by II/1352 Artillery (10,5cm). These units were made up of East Front veterans and replacements and were good quality troops. German Army squads were built around the MG42 machinegun, the infamous “Spandau,” which gave the Germans a substantial firepower advantage at the small unit level. They were also liberally supplied with ammunition. In terms of contrast, your US company in Normandy had 2 machineguns versus a German company with 14 machineguns. The US troops had to make up for the shortfall with artillery and tank support.
The flooded Aure valley made tank support difficult and the “Man-chus” were committed to action before everything had arrived. The initial attack was not successful. The Aure had to be forded on foot and casualties and supplies hand carried back and forth over the river. The “Manchus” did secure a foothold in the town. A better supported attack on the second day carried the position and the 2nd Infantry Division then pushed through the Foret de Cerisy. There was concern that the forested area would be a natural defensive position, but the Germans were organizing a new defensive line just

to the south of the forest. US planners did not realize the defensive strength of the bocage in that area.
As Trevieres fell, the first elements of the 3rd Fallschirmjäger Divi-sion began to arrive. There was not enough motor transport avail-able to move the division so one battalion from each regiment (5th, 8th, and 9th) went ahead with the FLAK battalion (three batteries of 88mm), the anti-tank battalion (three batteries of 75mm AT guns) and the sole I/3rd artillery (105mm) battalion. Each regiment and battalion had a Schwere Kompanie (heavy weapons company) that also added more machineguns, mortars (both 81mm and 120mm), and infantry guns (both 75mm and 105mm).
The German Fallschirmjägers (paratroopers) were well organized for this type of fighting. The company was more powerful and more independent than their army counterparts. Platoons each had an of-ficer as a leader, while army companies had NCOs as platoon lead-ers. Each squad was build around two MG42s, but as the MG42s were in short supply many squads may have had just one. If at full complement of machineguns the company would have had 18. The 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division reported that it had only 70% of the MG42s, but had six basic loads of ammunition available at the start of the campaign. The Company had its own 81mm mortar section which helped fill a critical shortfall in fire support available. The machinegun nest, mortar, and panzerfaust combination proved to be a difficult challenge for the “Manchus.” The Fallschirmjägers had trained in “guerilla” tactics and excelled at small unit defense, but the critical shortage of motor transport and artillery hurt their ability to react to US moves.
As the “Manchus” pushed forward inch by inch, the German paratroopers received little else in support. The 15th Regiment of the 5th Fallschirmjäger Division was committed from the reserve to slow the US advance. The paratroopers hotly contested the ground, but US tank-infantry teams supported by hundreds of artillery pieces slowly pushed them back. In this phase of the battle the Time-on-Target artillery technique coupled with close cooperation with tanks (both learned in the difficult fighting of the previous weeks), turned the tide.

Organization of the 9th Infantry Regiment, Korean War
Korea, Naktong River August 8th - September 28th, 1950The Manchus arrived in Korea via Pusan on July 23, 1950 becom-ing the first unit to reach Korea directly from the United States. The regiment, less its third battalion, was attached to the hard hit 24th Infantry Division on August 8th and battled the 16th Regiment, 4th NKPA Division (Reinforced) for Hill 165, known as the “Clover-leaf,” for the next ten days. The fighting cost 161 Manchus killed in action. The entire division was committed to relieve the 24th Infan-try Division at the Naktong River Line on August 24, 1950. The 9th RCT (Regimental Combat Team – a reinforced regiment), Colonel John G. Hill commanding, was responsible for the southern sector or left flank of the Division. That was more than 14km of frontage, with platoons on 500m fronts and companies on 4km fronts (very thin), along the entire Naktong Bulge.
After the devastating attack by the North Korean 9th Division on the night of August 31st, the battered division was organized into two Task Forces. One, under the command of the Division Artillery Commander, Brigadier General Loyal M. Haynes, was responsible for the northern sector of the Division Zone. It consisted of the remaining elements of the 38th and 23rd Infantry (-3rd Bn), Co C of the 72d Tank Battalion, and supporting artillery. The second task force was commanded by Brigadier General Joseph S. Bradley, assistant division commander, and consisted of elements of the 9th Infantry (-3rd Bn), 72nd Tank Battalion ( - ), 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, and supporting artillery. Task Force Bradley was respon-sible for the southern sector of the Division Zone.
After the situation was stabilized and 4,500 Korean replacements poured into the division, the 9th RCT with Colonel Charles C. Sloane in command continued the attack to retake the lost ground. The RCT consisted of the 9th Infantry (- 3rd Bn), Co B, 72nd Tank Bn (M26 Pershings), Battery D 82nd AAA Bn (quad .50s), and 15th FA Bn. The 9th Infantry Regiment was organized as follows:Colonel John G. Hill, Commanding, relieved by Colonel Charles C. Sloane

The 4th and 9th North Korean Rifle Divisions and elements of the 14th and 16th Mechanized Divisions comprised the strike force
across the Naktong River. The North Koreans were equipped along Soviet lines; a division of three regiments, a regiment of three bat-talions, a battalion of three companies, a company of three platoons, and a platoon of three squads. Each squad was equipped with a DP light machinegun, a sub machinegun or two, Shpagins PPSh41 or PPsh43 (US troops called these “Burp Guns”), and Moissin-Nagant M1891 rifles or M1944 carbines. Machinegun platoons had the SPM and SG43 wheeled Soviet heavy machineguns. The Mecha-nized units used trucks and each had tank units with T-34/85s. There were several tank battles during the Naktong fighting. The North Koreans were not adept at armor tactics and the terrain lim-ited use. Manchus knocked out two T-34/85s during the Cloverleaf fighting with 3.5” bazookas. The Marines just south of the Clover-leaf had a couple of tank versus tank engagements. There were also SU-76M assault guns, used as mobile artillery. The infantry also used 82mm and 120mm Mortars. They had some artillery (76.2mm field guns), but lacked long range heavy guns. The North Korean troops were tough, skilled veterans from fighting the Japanese.
Their biggest factor was mass. The Soviet style North Korean units were very vulnerable to US Air Strikes which were taking a dra-matic toll. It did not seem that way to the frontline units, but the ra-pidity of the North Korean collapse after the failure at the Naktong

Helicopter Assaults One of the primary methods of moving infantry into battle during the Vietnam War was via Helicopter. This had some advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it gave US forces unprecedented mobility and flexibility. They were not road bound in a country with few decent roads. On the negative side, though the helicopters provided “tactical” surprise, they did not provide actual surprise – they certainly gave a position away. This was made worse by the dependence on helicopters for resupply. Another problem with helicopters was that they could not carry much heavy equipment. The heavy weapons companies of Korea with all the HMGs and recoilless rifles were gone; when the US troops got off the helicop-ters they were very light, so they were very dependent on artillery and air support. The VC and NVA still had heavy weapons platoons and companies, so US troops were often outgunned in the critical opening stages of a firefight.
Viet Cong – 2nd “Go Mon” BattalionTwo Districts, Go Vap and Hoc Mon, were condensed to Go Mon. This famous VC unit was probably several different units of the 316th Regiment called the Quyet Thang (Determined to Win) Regi-ment. Commanded by Major Tu Nhut, the Quyet Thang’s three bat-talions of about 120 troops each were based in permanent fortified tunnel complexes built into the banks of the Saigon River. Battal-ions and companies had names instead of numbers internally. The 2nd Battalion was known as the “Otters.” The Otters had three com-panies of about 30 each (including 5 to 6 women in each company). Most of the officers were North Vietnamese cadre that had started moving into the area in 1965 to aid in training and recruiting. Under the command of Nguyen Ngoc Nham, 1st Company was part of a two battalion (roughly 200 men) ambush of Charlie Company (92 men) on March 2 , 1968 that left 49 “Manchus” dead. The 2nd Go Mon VC Battalion was equipped with a variety of weapons, mostly light mortars and machineguns, many captured from the ARVN, others standard PAVN issue such as SKS carbines, AK47 assault rifles, RPD light machineguns, and the ever popular RPG2, also known by US troops as B40 rocket grenades. Captured M79 40mm grenade launchers were also popular. North Vietnamese Army (PAVN)North Vietnamese troops were well equipped with SKS carbines, AK47s , RPD light machineguns, and RPG2/B40 at the squad and platoon level. They also used 60mm, 82mm, and 120mm mortars extensively, with the 82mm being the most popular. PAVN regi-ments also had recoilless rifle companies with 57mm, 75mm, and 82mm recoilless rifles and anti-aircraft companies of 12.7mm heavy machineguns. All this equipment spelled trouble as the equiva-lent US unit was clearly outgunned. The US troops had plenty of artillery and air power, both helicopter gunships and fixed wing air strikes to make up for it. PAVN tactics called for cover and conceal-ment to minimize the effectiveness of US supporting arms while
River is a good indication of their effectiveness. Unfortunately for the North Koreans, the US Rifle Company had a significant increase in firepower from WWII; more machineguns, more bazookas, and recoilless rifles all helped the US units, though spread thin, to inflict severe punishment.

maximizing their local fire superiority. In offensive operations, however, PAVN attacks were rigidly planned and executed and in the experience of the “Manchus” were always failures with heavy losses.

Designer’s Notes
I want to start by thanking all those that helped this design become a reality. My wife, Stacy, the first developer, Dave Gee, the final de-veloper, Dick Vohlers, and the play test team. Without their efforts this game would not have been possible.
When I designed this game I was looking for a completely different take on this scale. I will not claim it was all original. I had a great deal of inspiration from games like Up Front and Down In Flames. My intent is to give the player some insight into being an infantry unit leader. Playing is meant to generate a narrative that sounds like actual combat after-action reports.
I chose a solitaire format for two reasons. A large number of wargames are played solitaire, but few are built specifically for it. Actual combat is rarely balanced, but two player games need to be for both players to have a challenging experience. In combat, lead-ers strive to ensure that combat is not balanced; on offense, force is massed on a narrow frontage to achieve superior numbers. The play of the cards is meant to be similar to solitaire as well.
The Volume of Fire (VOF) concept of diminishing returns is based on the concept of an empty battlefield and area fire. In modern combat, small units deploy in loose, skirmisher formations and use cover and concealment as much as possible. This leads to an empty battlefield with fleeting targets. The byproduct is most fire is direct-ed at an area, versus a specific target. Leadership is not required for troops to open fire, but it is necessary to control, shift, or cease fires.
The LOS rules have two basic functions. One is to have simple ap-plication and the fixed lines, the sides and corners, is meant to force the players into linear deployment, which is how combat units tend to move and fight. This allows more realistic deployment without formation rules forcing the player to deploy a certain way.
Tracking ammunition was a tough decision, but it is a critical aspect of modern warfare. The heavy weapons are powerful, but limited on ammo. The ammunition has to be carried and history indicates they are the first to run out. Leaders are acutely aware of their am-munition state.
Tactical Hints
Now for a few pointers on tactics without recreating a field manual. Take some time planning how you will tackle a mission before you start. Choose the avenues of approach, where you want to setup a base of fire or an observation post. Arrange your troops to take advantage of the terrain. Maintain a reserve, but be careful in using it. Do not reinforce failure; use your reserve to push another way if one platoon gets stuck.
Executing a flank attack against an enemy position has the follow-ing steps.
1. Make and maintain contact with the enemy position2. Establish a base of fire with machineguns3. Gain fire superiority by at least pinning down the enemy4. Shift your base of fire5. Move on the enemy position and reduce it with a grenade
attack6. Displace your base of fire to or near the captured position
to bolster the firepower and repel any enemy counterattack
This process can take as little as three turns, but will most likely take four to five to pull off completely.
Leaders affect the battle in three ways once the mission is un-derway: controlling the reserve, providing supporting fires, and personal presence. Supporting fires should be your most common course of action; you should not commit the reserve but once in any given mission. Personal involvement in the fighting can be tempt-ing, but it is a last resort. It tends to leave the rest of the company to its own devices while you focus on the one contact. This can really bog down the company.
