This region is steeped in 250+ years of history. During the Halifax Explosion (the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons), many parts of the North End were destroyed. This brought the development of iconic neighbourhoods such as the Hydrostone, which now serves as a hip market with boutique shops and restaurants. During the 1950s, the North End served as the city’s premier shopping and theatre district. The region is also where civil rights pioneer, Viola Desmond (whose face is on the new Canadian $10 bill) lived and worked.
