BASILICA BASICS Our own Basilica of St. Mary in Old Town Alexandria is now the 84th Minor Basilica designated in the United States, the second in the State of Virginia and the first locat-ed in the Diocese of Arlington. While somewhat familiar to Catholics, the term Basilica originally referred to a specific function and style of build-ing in use during the time of the Roman Empire. A Basilica was a public building used by the emperor or judges for major events of noble import or significance. The structure was usually distinguished by columns, a long center aisle and an apse within the building. It was into the apse that the emperor or judge would be seated. As Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, Basilicas were converted into churches, with the altar and tabernacle of Our Lord, Jesus Christ substantially present in the apse, the place that was once occupied by the emperor. The Basilica thus became the “Royal House” that fulfilled the architectural and canonical functions that raise it to a place of honor and privilege.
Two Types of Basilicas There are two types of Basilicas: Major Basilicas and Minor Basilicas. First among the Major Basilicas is the Lateran Basilica of St. John, which is the Pontifical Cathedral of the Holy Father as the Bishop of Rome.
Other Major Basili-cas in Rome are the Lateran Basilica of St. John, the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter, St. Mary Major, St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls, St. Lawrence
Outside-the-Walls, St. Sebastian and the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. Outside of the Eternal City, the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi and the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem are also designated Major Basilicas. Minor Basilicas, like the Basilica of St. Mary, are those churches throughout Christendom that have been given a special designation by the Holy Father. Reasons for bestow-ing this designation include the church’s architectural beauty, historical significance, liturgical renown or any combination of these attributes. A Minor Basilica shares a special relationship with the See of Rome and with the Holy Father. Various privileges and obligations of the Minor Basilica highlight this important attachment to the Holy See and the Supreme Pontiff.
THE BASILICA SCHOOL OF ST. MARY This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, January 28 to February 2, providing us with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous blessing of a Catholic education. While it is of course primarily the responsibility of parents to educate their children in the faith, our Catholic schools also play a crucial role in helping parents form those who are entrusted to their care. Events coming up here during Catholic Schools Week include a February 1 Open House at the school (see school website at www.smsva.org) and the February 3 Family Bingo Night, which helps raise funds to support scholar-ships. (Find more information on Bingo Night on page 8.)
May God abundantly bless all of the parents, teachers, students and staff of our Basilica School of St. Mary as,
together, we strive for a joyful relationship with God.
ST. JOHN BOSCO Appropriately during Catholic Schools Week, January 31 is the Feast of St. John Bosco, patron saint of school children, who dedicated his life to educating youth. He died January 31, 1888. He was canonized in 1934 and given the title, "Father and Teacher of Youth."
CONCERT SERIES Join us in the Basilica at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 1 for “The Childhood of Christ Concert” featuring our amaz-ing Schola Cantorum, conducted by Music Director David Elliott. This moving concert, composed by Hector Berlioz, tells the story of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt.
PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Friday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the temple at Jerusalem on the 40th day after His birth. When Mary and Joseph arrived in the temple, they met Simeon, a “just and devout man, waiting for the con-solation of Israel" (Luke 2:25). Simeon embraced the Christ Child, calling Him “A light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32). These words inspired thecustom of blessing candles on this day, also known as Candlemas. Candles for personal use in the home will be blessed at our 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. Masses and will be available for a small donation.
ST. BLAISE & BLESSING OF THE THROATS Saturday, February 3 is the Feast of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, who lived in Armenia the early 4th century. A heal-er who became a "physician of souls," his aid is often in-voked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the throat. In memory of St. Blaise, the traditional blessing of the throats will occur at our 8:30 a.m. Mass that day.
