Second Sunday of Advent December 5th, 2021

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Stand on the heights, Jerusalem; see your children rejoicing that they are remembered by God. A merciful and just God leads Israel in joy (Baruch 5:1-9). Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading — May your love increase in knowledge to discern what is valuable that you may be blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel — John proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:1-6).

A DEEP CHANGE OF HEART When John proclaimed a baptism of repentance, as today’s Gospel relates, he called people to a deep change of heart. For John the Baptist, repentance was not simply regret for past failings, but a commitment to orient life around God’s desires and purposes. What might living in alignment with God’s desires look like? Our readings offer some clues. Baruch indicates that when mercy and justice are embraced like a royal garment, we may see the fruits of repentance. Paul notes how the Holy Spirit has been active within the church in Philippi, forming them to live in a loving and united community of faith, so they may witness to the love of God. And John himself suggests that a repentant heart clears a path for God to enter, leveling the mountains and valleys of our resistance, so that God might dwell within.

The ADVENT WREATH PRAYER for the Second Sunday of Advent

Leader: On the Second Sunday of Advent, we light THE CANDLE OF PREPARATION. God kept his promise of sending us a Savior.

Preparation means to “get ready.” Help us to be ready to welcome you, o God!

(A reading from the Gospel of Luke) “As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: ‘A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.‘” (Luke 3:4-6) Leader: (Leader reads as another member of the family lights a PUPLE candle) Heavenly Father, inspire us to follow in the steps of John the Baptist and PREPARE for the coming of your Son. Help us to look honestly into our hearts and see our faults. Give us the strength we need to overcome our weaknesses and help us to stay true to your commandments. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ADVENT RETREAT DECEMBER 18th

9AM-12PM IN THE PARISH CENTER

Fr. David Andel will present the

Advent retreat for adults on: “Creating Sabbath Space in Your

Life” Gandhi said, “There is more to life than simply increasing it’s speed.” Life never slows down, it only speeds up, and it is increasingly difficult to carve out a time and place to enjoy peace and quiet and the most important things in life. No one gives us less work, not even our family; no one tells us to slow down. Except for God. God alone tells-commands us-to rest. This Advent retreat-filled with inspiring quotes– will give some background to the importance of Sabbath and offer some tips for creating space in your life.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (Holy Day of Obligation)

Wednesday, December 8th, 2021 It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people think the term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb without the intervention of a human father; but that is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived “by the power of the Holy Spirit,” in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect. The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was conceived without original sin or its stain—that’s what “immaculate” means: without stain. The Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the Catholic Church maintaining that from the moment when she was conceived the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free of original sin and was filled with the sanctifying grace normally conferred during baptism. Mass times are: 7:30am (English) 9:00am (English) 7:00pm (Bilingual)

ADVENT YOUTH RETREAT DECEMBER 16TH

6PM - 8PM IN THE PARISH CENTER

December 16th is our patron Saint feast day!

Fr. Hau Vu will present the Advent retreat for youth on St. Adelaide

and her saintly virtues ! St. Adelaide of Burgundy, patron of

abuse victims, second marriages, and widows.

St. Adelaide was a picture of grace and beauty, according to her spiritual director and biographer, St. Odilon of Cluny. She was born a princess in 1931 and was to became not only the Queen of Italy, by the Empress of Italy. More importantly, this woman of grace lived a holy life, which wasn’t an easy endeavor, given her circumstances in life.

God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low.

— Baruch 5:7
