Miniature force link for measuring the three orthogonal com-ponents of a dynamic or quasistatic force acting in any direc-tion.

• Large measuring range•High rigidity•Very high sensitivity •Calibrated force link• Simple installation•Multipole connector

DescriptionThe force link consists of a piezoelectric 3-component force sensor which is mounted under preload between two mount-ing flanges. This results in a very stiff structure for high natural frequency. Compression and tensile forces can be measured. Ground insulated design for eliminating ground loop prob-lems. The 3-component force sensor has three quartz ele-ments, each is sensitive in X, Y or Z-direction. By applying a force, the quartz elements are creating a charge output. This charge is proportional to the applied force. The charge is trans-ferred to the corresponding pin of the V3 connector (protected design), where the cable can be connected.

The unique manufacturing process and high quality materials results in excellent electrical insulation, allowing also quasi-static measurements.

The force link is supplied calibrated. After correct installation, it is immediately ready for use without re-calibration.

ApplicationThe force links can meas ure the 3 ortho g o nal force com po-nents eas i ly, di rect ly and pre cise ly. Suitable for very low forces, thanks to its very high sensitivity.

Application examples•Crash forces•De ter mi na tion of co ef fi cients of fric tion• Forces at wind tunnel balances•Vibration forces

InstallationThe contact surfaces that transfer the forces to the measuring element must be flat, rigid and clean.

If four force links are used for the construction of a measure-ment platform, the following must be observed:•Measuring elements must be ground to the same height• Same material for base and top plate• Base and top plate of sufficient rigidity•Max. temperature 80 °C

The measuring element can be fastened either from outside with four M4 screws each, or from the center with four M3 screws each.

The screws must be tightened sufficiently to ensure that no gap can appear between the contact surfaces, even when the greatest force is applied.

Measuring Signal ProcessingFor the measuring system a charge amplifier is needed. This converts the measuring signal (charge) into a voltage. The value that is output is exactly proportional to the force.Type 5070A... multichannel charge amplifier was built specifi-cally for the multicomponent force measuring system.

Force ApplicationIf a single quartz force link is used, the resulting force vector should pass through the center of the sensor where possible. Eccentric force application creates a moment loading on the sensor. This is only permissible up to the specified values. The maximum force ranges must be reduced correspondingly.A dynamometer of sufficiently rigid structure with four quartz force links prevents too great moment loading on the single sensor element.

ParallelingWhen building a dynamometer, the four quartz force links are mechanically paralleled. The measuring signals (electric char-ge) of the four sensors can also be paralleled (summated). The summated signal corresponds to the algebraic total of the individual forces.Type 5417 summing box facilitates the simple and reliable interconnection of measuring signals.

Fig. 3: Summing box Type 5417

There is also Type 5080A... charge amplifier. This provides an extended measuring range and a higher degree of accuracy, particularly when measuring low forces.
