Dear Parents,
Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and friends of Pinewood Primary School who have expressed their personal thanks and appreciation to both myself and the Pinewood staff
in regard to our successful whole school production of Disney’s, ‘Lion King Jr’, this week. It is great to receive such positive feedback. I will enjoy passing it on to the students at assembly next week.
Congratulations again to our students on providing us all with a wonderful production spectacle over two evenings. You all did an outstanding job and we (teachers and parents) are ALL very proud of your efforts.
It was also very satisfying to see the girls and boys from different year levels develop more self -confidence and stage presence as the rehearsals progressed.
The students acting a main role in the performance had demanding and often challenging characters to play. I congratulate you especially on the amazing level of commitment demonstrated in learning your part of the play and then for performing it so splendidly on each of the evenings. Main cast: (Please see the Lion King Jr. program for full names) Rafiki– Lithasha P Mufasa– Isabella K Sarabi– Jasmine J Zazu– Lucia I Scar– Madeleine D Sarafina–Rachel H, Young Simba–Adi P Simba–Yathvin Y Young Nala– Elly M Nala– Piper F Timon– Lucas A Pumbaa– Shantel C Banzai– James K Shenzi– Kelly F Ed– Nicolas D

The production, was a wonderful example of a whole school effort. As Pinewood’s principal, I wish to thank each staff member for your commitment towards achieving a successful school production and your personal dedication of time and energy to attending both rehearsals and the production evenings.
There was not one member of our staff, both teaching and non-teaching who had not been involved at some level. Very few, if any, organisations can state that every employee is involved in the production of one event like we can at Pinewood PS.

Many thanks to our staff ‘Lion King Jr.’ production team. Your particular contributions to the performance ensured a successful production for the children;
Mrs Jessica Murphy, Mrs Jenny Thomas, Mr Paul Dobney, Miss Sandra McGregor, Miss Cathryn Slusher (trainee teacher), Miss Jessica Sexton, Miss Moui Ung, Miss Yalenka Clement, Miss Delani Cruse, Mrs Faye Park, Mrs Natalie Kelly, Mr Troy Hartigan, Miss Rebecca Jach, Ms Francine Combes, Mrs Nicole Blowfield, and Mrs Helen Dent.
Finally, I would like to thank our wonderful School Council and parent community who have helped to make this production possible. Your children performed magnificently in Disney’s, ‘Lion King Jr.’ school production, however, without your support the students would not have had such an opportunity to do so.
Please view the back of the newsletter for some ‘behind the scenes’ photos from our production evenings.
WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school.
It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.
Approximately 15 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous.
The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindhi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu.
The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September.
The survey results will be communicated to parents through the annual report. Last year we used the survey results to inform and direct various elements of our future school planning and improvement. For further information, visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyparent.aspx ARRIVING AT SCHOOL
It is very important that our students arrive at school ready to start the day at 9.00am. Late arrivals are becoming more numerous with many students arriving between 9.05 and 9.30am. The education and wellbeing of students arriving late is being compromised and these students are disadvantaged in their learning.
Please do not assume that important learning only begins after 9.30am. Children need to feel a sense of belonging within their class and need a few minutes to prepare for learning, settle in with their friends and classmates and prepare for the day. The first 15 minutes in the classroom each morning are crucial for setting the scene for the day. Karen Jenkin Principal

PARENTS CLUB NEWS
CHESS PROGRAM
Places are still available for the Chess Club.
The program will commence on Tuesday, 1st August and run for 7 weeks. The cost of the program is $35.
Chess teachers come into the school from Chessplant to teach the children, along with Mr Grant from 2G.
Chess is one of the most powerful educational tools available to develop a child’s mind. There is documented scientific evidence that chess study, over a period of 12 months, significantly increases children’s measureable intelligence and ability to quickly adapt to changing technologies. More in-formation can be obtained from www.auschess.org.au/articles/chessmind.htm
Parents,
This week we have been exploring more maze
puzzles and added some Sudoku to the mornings
which proved quite popular with some of the
older children. They enjoyed the challenge that the
Sudoku puzzle provided and learnt a bit more
about problem solving as a result. Many of the
children have been showing off string tricks that
they have been practising at home as well as
school. The tricks were really impressive and they
kept wanting to trap staff's hands in their webs!
Pancake mornings as always proved popular with
many of the children very excited to come to these
mornings.

Notes for parents:
We have switched over to a new email address so
for those of you that email us you can use the
following: [email protected]
IMPORTANT!: We have been noticing many
parents are not signing in or out their children
correctly which causes us some worry when our
numbers do not match those signed into the roll.
This can lead us to becoming concerned we have a
missing child and then contacting the police as well
as ringing the emergency contacts for the relevant
children. Please ensure you are signing in your
children in the morning and have signed them out
in the evening. Thanks!
