RS series relays are compact, space-savingrelay terminal modules containing four orsix card relays with one normally opencontact each. These relay-and-terminalmodules are ideal for interfacingelectronic control devices (such as PLCs orphotoelectric sensors) with output devices.

    RS6N-DE

    RS4N-DE

Features: Compact size of 34mmwide by 69mmlong, including screw terminals

Input terminals are located in the upperpart and output terminals in the lower partof themodule to separate them from eachother, makingwiring easy

    RB105 plug-in relays and TP04 socketsmakemaintenance easy

Built-in coil surge-suppression diodes andoperation indicator LEDs simplify circuitdesign andmaintenance

    Themodule is easily-mounted on a 35mmDIN rail

The RS4Nmodule includes two standardaccessory jumper plates, which areconvenient for commonwiring ofterminals

OverviewMetal Oxide Varistors (MOV) and Diodecircuits are offered as convenient plug-inmodules. Plugging a module into therelay socket connects the circuit in parallelwith the relay coil. No additional wiring isrequired.

Modules fit within the maximum dimen-sions of the relay and socket.

Features MOVs protect by shunting potentiallydamaging electrical spikes away from therelay coil. Ideal for AC and DC applications.

Diodes protect external drive circuitry from inductive voltages generated when removing coil voltage.Ideal for DC applications. Polarity sensitive.

ApplicationMany PLC systems control one or moreinductive load devices. These inductiveloads (devices with a coil) generate tran-sient voltages when they are de-energizedwith a relay contact. When a relay contactis closed it bounces, which causes thecoil to energize and de-energize until thebouncing stops. The transient voltagewhich is generated is much larger inamplitude than the supply voltage, espe-cially with a DC supply voltage.

When switching a DC-supplied inductiveload the full supply voltage is alwayspresent when the relay contact opens (orbounces). When switching an AC-supplied inductive load, if the voltageis not zero when the relay contact opens, there is energy stored in the inductor thatis released when the voltage to theinductor is suddenly removed. This releaseof energy is what produces transient voltages.

When inductive load devices (motors, motor starters, interposing relays, sole-noids, valves, etc.) are controlled withrelay contacts, it is recommended that asurge suppression device be connecteddirectly across the coil of the field device. If the inductive device has plug-typeconnectors, the suppression device can beinstalled on the terminal block of the relayoutput.

Metal oxide varistors (MOV) and diodesare devices which provide good surgeand transient suppression of AC and DCpowered coils.

    AD-SSR210-DC shown

A solid state relay is a relay with isolatedinput and output, whose functions areachieved by means of using electroniccomponents without the use of movingparts (vs.electromechanical relays).

OperationSolid state relays (SSR) are similar toelectromechanical relays, in that both use acontrol circuit and a separate circuit forswitching the load. When voltage isapplied to the input of the SSR, the relay isenergized by a light-emitting diode. Thelight from the diode is beamed into a lightsensitive semiconductor which, in the caseof zero voltage crossover relays, signals thecontrol circuit to turn on the output of thesolid state switch at the next zero voltagecrossover.

Solid State Relay FeaturesSolid state relays have features whichelectromechanical relays do not, such as:

Long life Shock and vibration resistant No generation of RFI, EMI No contact bounce Arcless switching No acoustic noise Zero crossing IC compatibility Immunity to humidity, salt spray and dirt UL # E222847

AD-SSR Features AC & DC input AC output 10 or 25 amp loads Photo isolated zero voltage switching 4000V rms isolation input to output Internal RC (snubber) network RFI suppression Integral safety cover and heatsink DIN-rail mounting or panel-mount

AD-70S2 Features DC input AC output Up to 4 amp loads Optically isolated Quick connect terminal, or panel mountwhen inserted into DIN-rail mountablesocket

The Class 8 solid state relays offer energyefficient current switching in a slimhousing ideal for space-saving applica-tions.

Switching types include Zero Cross forresistive AC loads where the output energizes/de-energizes when controlvoltage nears zero, and Random for ACloads where the output switches instantaneously with the actual voltage.

All Class 8 solid state relays use an SCR,which is suited for AC load applications,as the switching device .
