The property was built in 1896, for a wealthy Victorian industrialist. It sits in an elevated position, with large bay windows facing south, looking out over landscaped gardens and with far reaching views. It has also been home to a merchant seaman, a prominent Egyptologist, and was a nursing home during the war and a convent for a long period after the War; before being divided into three wings in the 1970’s.

The prominent Italianate tower, with its tall mullioned windows, creates an impressive façade, as you approach the property from the driveway. A stone arch frames the oak front door and once inside the property, the Dining Hall welcomes you with a flagstone floor, oak panelling and a baronial stone fireplace. The high ceilings are characteristic

of the period and the grandeur of the property. This is most noticeable in the stately Drawing Room, which is generously proportioned, with oak panelling, adorned with carved detailing and an enormous fireplace with a stone surround and an ornamental, carved oak mantelpiece. There is a large window seat on the west elevation and a large bay window to the south, overlooking the gardens and a pair of doors leading out to a covered terrace. Adjoining the Drawing Room there is a Study, which is fitted with bookshelves and also has a door out onto the terrace. The Kitchen is approached from the Dining Hall, past a walk in pantry and a utility room. It is fitted with a range of pine units, with tiled worktops and an oil fired Aga. The breakfast table sits beneath a large picture window that overlooks a small terraced garden.

The elegant staircase is another stunning feature of the property, with a decorative wrought iron balustrade that climbs and turns over three floors, illuminated from above by an imposing glass roof light. The first floor is currently configured as a sitting room with a large bay window from which to sit and admire the view, and an adjoining kitchen, which allows this floor to be self-contained. There are two bedrooms, one of which is an elegantly proportioned room with high ceilings and an adjoining shower room. The second floor houses three more bedrooms; one being another elegantly proportioned room with high ceilings and an adjoining dressing room. The two other bedrooms look out over the garden, and a family bathroom serves all three bedrooms. From the bathroom steps lead up to the roof terrace which sits atop the tower and affords panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

with charm and character at every turn, this is a very

special house indeed

The south facing landscaped gardens were a striking feature in the design of the property. Thankfully, many of the original features still remain; including the Grotto, sweeping flights of stone steps, kitchen garden and woodland walks. A barstone pathway leads down from the terrace to a large expanse of lawn, which stretches away from the house and culminates in a stone parapet from which to admire the view. Stone steps lead down to the kitchen gardens. In turn, the formal gardens lead to a wooded copse with pathways that wind along and down the side of the hill, eventually to a Grotto, which sits hidden in the hillside with stone steps leading down either side and an ornamental pond in the centre. The garden gives way to woodland and is surrounded by countryside. It is possible to walk in any direction from the house, but most significant is an unimpeded route to the White Horse pub and restaurant!

Hascombe is surrounded by mile upon mile of countryside

Location

Hascombe is a typical Surrey village. It contains a cluster of cottages and country estates, St Peter’s church, the village green and The White Horse pub, all nestling between wooded hillsides. It is situated approximately midway between Godalming and Cranleigh and is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The name of the village is considered to come from Hægscombe meaning valley of the witch or “hag” in Old English. Winkworth Arboretum, with its collection of rare trees and shrubs, is nearby and there are walks through the surrounding hills and along the greensand way. The nearest town is Godalming, which offers a wide choice of shops, cafes and restaurants; as well as supermarkets and other chain stores. There is a mainline station with a service to Waterloo and access to the A3 for central London and the M25.
