Position Description 2016-2017Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature and the Written Word

The Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) works to advance student efforts to create a culture of sustainability at OSU through programming that fosters environmental, social, and economic justice. SSI believes educational institutions have a responsibility to model innovative tools, systems, and ways of thinking as living laboratories for sustainability, and provide students the experiences to become leaders in their communities creating sustainable change.

The Sustainability Fellowship Program pairs passionate student leaders with campus departments and community organizations working to solve local and global sustainability challenges through research, education, and community engagement. Sustainability Fellowships contribute to projects that support sustainability goals while developing leadership competencies and transferable professional skills through supervision, mentorship, networking, and professional development. Participation in the program will enable you to develop the skills to be a sustainability leader including:

Spring Creek Project is recruiting a Sustainability Fellow to serve as Spring Creek Project Student Fellow.

About the Spring Creek Project: The challenge of the Spring Creek Project is to bring together the practical wisdom of the environmental sciences, the clarity of philosophical analysis, and the creative, expressive power of the written word, to find new ways to understand and re-imagine our relation to the natural world. Position Summary:  The Spring Creek Project Student Fellow will work closely with staff to plan and promote events and gain experience creating outreach campaigns, hosting visiting lecturers, and building Spring Creek collaborations with students and student groups. The Student Fellow will be responsible for

Helping develop and host events that encourage students to think deeply about the environmental, social, and economical aspects of climate change, including hosting writer and activist Naomi Klein on campus

Coordinating writing submissions for the project “Microbiomes: To See the Unseen,” an exhibit inspired by microbiology research and research methods at OSU, which will culminate in an exhibit at the Corvallis Arts Center

Helping develop workshops and events that encourage students to explore the campus as an ecosystem, including a keynote lecture by visiting writer, birder, and naturalist J. Drew Lanham

The successful candidate will demonstrate an aptitude to be effective in all responsibilities of the position.

Fellowship Responsibilities:

Working with staff to develop and plan events focused on climate change resistance, carbon neutrality, and creative alternatives

Managing project timelines and goals Building project collaborations and partnerships Coordinating program speakers Promoting events on campus and in the community Working with staff to update the Spring Creek Project website Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Have an understanding and appreciation of the Spring Creek Project mission

Ability to think creatively and critically Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines Ability to work independently and collaboratively Must be a currently enrolled student at Oregon State University in at least

6 academic credits Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and

during entire period of employment Must maintain at least a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (undergraduates) or 3.0

(graduates)

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with Drupal, or a similar web platform, is appreciated but not required

Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for holistic (environmental, social, and economic) sustainability

Prior involvement in leadership activities, student organizations, event planning and/or outreach activities

Maintain at least a cumulative and term GPA of 2.5 (undergraduates)

Terms: This is a 15-hour per week position. Please note that students are allowed

to work 19 hours per week on campus, so applicants cannot work more than 4 hours per week at another campus job.

Fellows are required to participate in monthly professional development with SSI as members of the Sustainability Fellows Cohort. These professional development activities will be paid hours with a 10 hour requirement per term.

Position dates: September 21, 2016 – June 9, 2017 Required to attend bi-weekly supervisory meetings Pay rate is $10.05 per hour Office location: 101 Hovland Hall Fellows will be expected to complete a reflective E-Portfolio and present

on their learning on campus at the end of the year.

Training Commitment: Training will be provided on the job.
