From the Campus Principal; Gregory C Mowday

Welcome to the latest edition of the Tenby Schools Penang newsletter.

As we enter the term break I would like to take the opportunity to thank all members of the School’s community for their contribution to the continued progress and growth of our school. This term has seen many events and activities celebrated by the school in addition to the excellent development of our core business of teaching and learning.

The end of term was celebrated in style last evening (23rd March) by the Spring Festival. It was a wonderful evening of music and I am always amazed by the incredible range of talent in our students that are on display on such occasions. Once again, our students seized the opportunity to showcase their abilities to confidently entertain and delight a large audience. Special thanks is extended to Mr. Nick who tirelessly works to brings such celebrations to fruition.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy break with family and friends, and I look forward to the commencement of the new term on 4th April.

Withdrawal of Students Parents are reminded that in the instance of a student being withdrawn from the School it is a requirement that the School is notified One Term in advance of the withdrawal. Should the School not be provided with one term‘s notice of withdrawal it is Tenby policy not to refund the deposit. The notification of withdrawal must be done in writing (email or letter) and either submitted in person to Admissions or to a relevant school secretary, or sent by email to [email protected] It is essential that the receipt of the letter is acknowledged by the School with a chop and copy, or that the email is responded to by a member of the School Administration team. Should this not happen, parents are asked to inform their Head of School immediately.

From The Head of STPS

A blind man had been waiting a while at a busy road for someone to offer to guide him across, when he felt a tap on his shoulder. “Excuse me,” said the tapper, “I’m blind. Would you mind guiding me across the road?” The first blind man took the arm of the second blind man and they both crossed the road. After the event the first blind man, commented: “What could I do? I took him across and it was the biggest thrill of my life!”

This incident illustrates that sometimes taking a risk can help reduce our dependency on others and lead to the discovery of new capabilities and personal satisfaction. When it comes to children and risk taking, we would not want them to step out “blindly” when someone taps them on the shoulder and offer them a “dare”. It’s a balancing act that requires knowing when to let children take risks in safe environments, as against taking risks in situations where they would endanger themselves or others. Taking risks allows children to understand the concept of trial and error very much like learning to ride a bicycle. There will be many falls before the skill is successfully mastered. Success will certainly build self-confidence, boost self-esteem and provide a sense of competency. Inevitably, failure will not only make them acknowledge their boundaries, but will provide them with opportunities to cope with the negative emotions that accompany failure. Self-confident children have the inner fortitude to try new things, even if there is a possibility of failure.

Positive risk-taking behaviour can be most beneficial to our children and the more practice they have with identifying risks and acting accordingly, the better prepared they will be for interaction with the real world beyond a protective home.

School environment interaction is the best place for children to step out independently to practise risk-taking behaviour. It is a safe environment. Thus we ask for the parents’ cooperation to not linger on the school grounds once they have dropped their children. If we can control our urge to step in and provide solutions, we may witness our children engage in creative thinking. We might witness our children explore their own abilities, make appropriate choices and rejoice in their own accomplishments.

Best regards,

Cheah Sin Hock

Book Donation Tahun 5

Congratulations Students of Tahun 5 for donating books to year group Tahun 1, 2 and 3.

This is putting into practise what they have learnt in their Pendidikan Moral lesson of doing charitable deeds.

The book donation ceremony was conducted during the assembly on the 14th March 2016. During the ceremony students personally gave away their books to the class teachers of Tahun 1, 2 and 3.

Thank you to all the students who have donated books and for Mr Prakash Rao for organising the activity.

Laekeisya Rao who was the leader in this project gave a speech and conducted the ceremony.

Laekeisya Rao’s speech :

“Good morning Mr Cheah, my beloved teachers and my fellow friends. My name is Laekeisya Rao and I am from Junior 5.

I am here today to share some exciting news with you. We in Junior 5, together with Mr Prakash are doing a donation campaign as part of our moral lesson.

Over the last one week, we have all donated books, which will be given to Junior 1, Junior 2 and Junior 3. We have sorted out the books according to the level of the students and in each book there is a little paper stuck with the name of the generous Junior 5 student who donated the book.

Our aim is to help increase the mini class library in Junior 1, 2 and 3. This will encourage reading among our students in Sri Tenby.

We hope our little brothers and sisters in Junior 1, 2 and 3 will be delighted with this surprise and take this golden opportunity to enjoy the world of books.

Thank You.”

From The Head of STSS

Dear parents,

The weather is really hot and dry. In fact due to the El Nino phenomenon, the temperature in Malaysia has been 33°C- 34°C (91°F -93°F) for weeks.

The hot weather, needless to say, affects everyone. On the positive side, our students study in the cool comfort of air-conditioned classes. Other facilities including the library and sports hall are all air-conditioned. Hence, teaching and learning go on smoothly, unaffected by soaring temperatures, outdoors.

However, there are times when outdoor activities are necessary, that is, during Physical Education classes and sports and games which are part of the co-curricular activities. It is also the time of the year when students partake in sports and games organised by the MSSPP.

It is during such out of the class activities, when the heat is searing, that students need to take precautions to keep cool, literally. Getting too hot in warm weather may result in heat stress or heat cramps and fatigue.

Parents and teachers can help remind students of some simple and effective ways to stay cool in the scorching weather brought about by El Nino.

1. Stay out of the sun while it’s at its hottest Other than compulsory school activities that take place outdoors, avoid any strenuous exercise during the hottest times of the day, particularly during noon.

2. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Drink water even when not feeling thirsty as water keeps the body cool.

3. Eat light. Take food that is easier to digest and where water content is high , like salads, fruits and vegetables.

4. Slather on sunscreen to avoid sunburn which reduces the ability of the body to release heat. Wear a hat/cap and stay in the shade whenever possible. We hope those tips will help everyone to really stay cool in scorching temperature.

Best regards

Easter Chocolate Sale, fundraiser for Graduation Dinner

It has been a ‘tradition’ in STSS for fourth formers to organise the Graduation Dinner for Form Five students and to celebrate the occasion with them.

For this purpose, the Student Council representatives and the fourth formers will be selling Easter Chocolates as a fundraising activity to help cover the cost of the celebration. Money raised will go a long way to make the Graduation Dinner a memorable one for the fifth formers.

As Easter is just around the corner, Student Council Representatives will take orders for Easter Chocolate Eggs from the 16th to 18th March.

Join in the fun for a good cause! Dedicate the Easter Chocolate Eggs to loved ones, friends, teachers and family.

All orders will be delivered on 23rd March.

Class Activities

SEGAK

Physical Education (PE) is a core and compulsory subject taught in the Integrated Curriculum for Secondary School. There are formal summative assessments for PE. One of the tests is the National Physical Fitness Standard (SEGAK). All secondary school students are assessed based on a list of physical fitness tests, namely the sit and reach, the sit-up, the push-up and step-up tests. The SEGAK tests are held in the school sports hall and takes up to a week to complete.

Class Activities

BMAL Class The class started on 19th February. One of the objectives is to enhance the proficiency of Bahasa Malaysia through varied, engaging strategies.

The main focus is on grammar and writing skills. The target students are from Form 1 and selected students from Form 2. Classes are held every Friday from 3pm to 4 pm.

The teacher also submits periodic reports to parents to update them on the progress of students.

MSSPP Students are really enthusiastic about participating in the MSSPP track and field events. There are participants for shot putt, long jump and in the 100, 200, 400 metres events . Students are keen to participate and we should improve upon performance on shot putt. However, in such sports meet, students benefit in ways other than achieving medals. There are opportunities to develop leadership qualities and good sportsmanship. Students train every Monday and extra training is also held to sharpen skills.

STSS students in Tenby VS,. Uplands Football Match On the 7th of March, a 7-a-side football match between Tenby and Uplands was held at Uplands. Three STSS students were involved in the game, all from Form 4. Shaun played as a goalkeeper for the full match, while Kai Kiong and Ken Loong made substitute appearances as outfield players. The final score was 8-1 to the away side. It was really satisfying to win! Shaun, Form 4

From the Head of TISS

Dear Parents,

Our focus for the week has been about ‘Responsibility’. We started off with an excellent presentation in assembly from students explaining the different ways in which you can be responsible both inside and outside of school. This is an important attribute for us as a community to help develop in our students as many events, projects and trips are student-led. This gives students valuable experience in leadership and also helps build their responsibility skills.

We have had ‘book week’ with teachers and students dressing up as characters from books, a writing and reading challenge and a book swap for students to try a new book.

Our students are also away on Bonding days as I write this newsletter and to finish the week we have Open Days on Friday and Saturday. We hope all students enjoy their time on the Bonding days as these are vital for our school and hugely beneficial for our students. Thank you to everyone who has organised and helped put these days together.

I look forward to the parents evenings and to see if the new format can help alleviate some of the issues previously.

Warm regards,

Mr Paul Walton

SPRING CONCERT 2016

The return of our popular mid-year ‘Spring Concert’ is coming up very soon on Wednesday 23rd March 2016. Where previously the Spring Concert has only included classical music pieces, the range of music this year has been widened to showcase student’s talents in performing music from many different genres, including unplugged acoustic versions of classic pop and rock songs.

This year’s programme includes solo performances on piano, violin, and clarinet, two guitar ensembles, the Primary recorder ensemble, three acoustic rock bands, and even a sneak preview performance of our Tenby in Harmony choir performing an extract from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, in preparation for their upcoming performance at the Petronas Towers, KLCC (see below for more details). In addition to all of this, our fabulous Parents Association (TSPA) will be serving a range of delicious finger food and mocktails throughout the evening.

Tickets are on sale now for just RM3 (ticket price even includes a free drink on arrival!), and are available from the Primary, Secondary and Finance Offices.

Tenby Schools Penang’s Debate Competition 2016:

Penny for Your Thoughts In almost any event or situation, food has always been the host’s saving grace.

On the 27th of February, Tenby hosted its first inter-school debate competition, courtesy of Stefany Soh and Lau Wayne Yan with the support of the Tenby staff and students!

At 8.30 sharp, the various teams descended en masse upon our ill-prepared but enthusiastic welcoming and registration committee. One hour, two organisers, five schools, 8 teams and numerous rounds back and forth between the register and the library later, we were finally ready to begin our opening ceremony.

There were certain glitches and mishaps along the way and by the end of the first two debate rounds, Stef and I were ready to sleep for a hundred years if it weren’t for the aid of the teachers, moderators and even the judges!

Up until that point, things had been running relatively well. Then, it was time for lunch.

Tables set and cleaned like the round tables of a French café, with bags of chicken rice sitting atop their beautiful, porcelain mounts, arranged with symmetrical precision around a centrepiece of chilli packets and watermelons… It was an art! While on paper, it may seem wholly unconvincing, in truth it was an impressive gift, courtesy of the few volunteer parents who arrived to help and who did more than just prepare the food.

The day from then on took on a positive, if not entirely coherent, route. I can proudly say that this may be the only event that has ever ended on time and on such a positive note!

From The Head of TIPS

Dear Parents,

We were very proud last weekend of the 30 children who represented TIPS at the St Patrick’s Day Parade at Straits Quay. They all arrived dressed in green and pinned on the green shamrocks to mark the occasion. We later took part in the parade alongside other schools and community groups. We took to the stage as the first act and sang a wonderful rendition of Galway Girl. Thank you to all the families and friends who came and supported us during this event.

The actual date of St Patrick’s Day is 17th March –so here’s wishing everyone who may celebrate this day - A Happy St Patrick’s Day.

Regards

Ms Marian

TIPS Book Swap

During our Book Week Year 6 organized a Book Swap. Many children brought in books that they no longer needed and donated them to the swap. They received a ticket that enabled them to take a different book. This was a great success and many children now have new and exciting books to read and share.

Ms Etta and the students in Year 6 organized the event, by promoting it, collecting the books, organising the day and then supervising the actual swap with all children from Nursery to their class mates in Year 6.
