Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences Thank you to all the parents and guardians who were able to attend these
conferences at the end of last week. Staff always appreciate the opportunity to
speak with the parents and students together about how studies are progressing. It
is important too; for parents, as they can now put a name to a face when their
young person is talking about school and their teachers.
If you were unable to attend the conferences, please give your child’s teachers a call
and discuss any concerns or questions you have. It is very important to keep the
communication happening between teacher and parent.
ANZAC Commemorations On Friday, 24th April our school leaders will conduct the ANZAC Ceremony at
school and at the same time two school leaders along with Mr Honeywell will
represent Newcomb Secondary College at a ceremony in Johnstone Park with
other Geelong schools.
On Saturday (ANZAC Day) our Senior College Band will be supporting the
ANZAC Commemoration ceremony in Ocean Grove.

Parent Portal Have you had a look at the Xuno Parent Portal
yet? Our online information portal lets you see
details about student attendance, classes, reports and
message centre. Teachers and students are using this
portal to communicate and send and receive work
for classes. All families should have received a letter
with log on passwords and instructions to connect. If
you have this letter please read it and have a go. If
you do not have a letter please let Mr Stephen Bath
know and another copy will be arranged. All
students should know how to log on and are
encouraged to show their parent/guardian how
Xuno works. To connect go to our college website
at www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au and select Logon at
the bottom of the home page.
Student Computers We are very pleased with the increased number of
students coming to school with their own computer device to help improve their learning. We still have
opportunities for families to buy a new computer
through our JB portal. For more details please go to
our website at http://www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au/
Computers/2014-student-computers
If you already own a computer we can arrange to
have this set up for use at school – bring it in and see
our IT support staff.
Being able to use a computer in any class or at home
links in really well with Xuno as a learning portal and
greatly improves student organisation and work
productivity.

Doing the Melbourne “Capital City Trail” … Doing the Melbourne “Capital City Trail” … Doing the Melbourne “Capital City Trail” … On 2 Wheels! On 2 Wheels! On 2 Wheels!
On Thursday, 25th March the majority of the On 2 Wheels class headed to Melbourne with myself, Mr
Curnick and Pak Karl to experience a tour of the city as they would never have seen it before.
We completed a 30km loop of the city, starting at the Melbourne Zoo, heading north east along the top of
Parkville through suburbs such as Carlton, Brunswick and Clifton Hill. We joined the Merri Creek then
the Yarra river paths and wound our way through Collingwood, through the Collingwood Children’s farm.
We continued to follow the Yarra out toward Hawthorne and Toorak, before it turned us west again
(into a head wind) and followed the South Eastern freeway to Olympic Park. We crossed the river and
rode into Southbank for a late lunch. From there, we rode past the Polly Woodside, Jeffs’ shed, and
Harbour Town shopping centre at the Docklands on our way north following the small creek under the
Bolte Bridge tollway until it reached the ‘Cheese Stick’ at the start of the Calder highway at the base of
Royal Park and our bus at the Zoo.
Some of the many highlights included the beautiful river trails with cool flowing water beside us, lunch at
Southbank (and watching all sorts of people go by) and the many impressive views of the city sky line from
different points of the ride. Well done to those who rode. A great day out – a great experience.

73 Provide Easter fun for Newcomb Park Preps
On the last Thursday of term one, 73 Drama, again provided Easter cheer to the Newcomb Park Preps with
their concert of shows for the young students. (See last newsletter term one). The young students enjoyed
the show and to quote one of their teachers they “performed very well”. The preps really got into the
dancing at the end and from their attentiveness and answering questions really ‘got into the shows’.

GEELONG TERTIARY FUTURES PROGRAM This Friday all Year 9 Grow students will be participating in their first practical day of the Geelong Tertiary Futures
Program. Our students will be experiencing a range of tasters including Cooking, Hair & Beauty, Electrical,
Automotive, Fitness and Engineering. The students will be spread over both East Geelong and City Campuses
therefore each individual student must consult their individual timetable to be sure they attend the correct campus.
A bus will be provided for any student attending the City Campus which will leave Newcomb Secondary College
approximately 8.50am and return approximately 3pm. All students attending the East Geelong campus are required to
make their own transport arrangements.
The day will start with all students assembling in the campus cafeteria where they will be collected by their teacher. All
students must also be aware if any safety equipment or clothing is needed for their chosen course they must have it
organised accordingly.
If any families or students have concerns or queries please contact Mrs Boyanton.

IN MY CLASSES
Year 7 - Paper Plane Activity
During the last week of Term 1 Year 7 students participated in a paper plane making activity. The main
focus of the lesson was reading for instructional purposes. Students could choose from four plane
designs and then put their reading skills to work to follow the ‘fold and fly’ instructions. At the end of
each lesson students tested their planes and held a competition to see which plane flew the furthest.
The activity was very successful with everyone competently following the instructions, asking numerous
questions and then enjoying the practical aspect of seeing how well their planes flew. As a follow up
students will have the opportunity to watch the movie, Paper Planes.

Group 82 Complete Unfinished Business
Thursday, 27th March 2015 Group 82 finished off their work on the Geelong History assignment in the
city.
After catching the local public transport into town using their Myki’s and having lunch in Macca’s, we
went on the walking tour of the wool quarter of Geelong. Thanks to Ms McArthur for the assignment
and Mentor Marlene for her help on this trip. Group 82 was really well behaved and even though the
weather was cold they ‘soldiered on’.
An educationally, enjoyable trip was had by all.
