A novel approach to Web navigation support

•Artifacts do not serve simply to facilitate mental processes that would otherwise exist. They fundamentally shape and transform them (Vygotsky, Wertsch) :

the navigator’s subjective experience plays an important role in Webnavigation (Jul, Furnas).

Web navigation is MEDIATED by navigation software

•NESTOR approach :

help users capitalize and conceptualize their navigation experience in building navigation objects : maps, tours …

A novel approach to Web navigation support

•Any piece of information has (at least) three separate aspects :the content of the information proper the characteristics of the source, which gives context to the information.the context of use (Harper : “information that counts”)

•NESTOR approach :

help users build a personal information space highly relevantto their work context.

Combining Hypertext and graphical HCI

•Nestor provides Web navigators with multiple representations : Hypertext and Map

•Just as a hotword is contextualized in hypertext, a graphical object is contextualized into the map.

Promoting “constructive” navigation

•Nestor engage users to go beyond building maps of Web resources : they can enrich the maps in creating their own content - hypertext style.

•If Web browsing compares to reading, Nestor is more a tool for writers - or at least active readers.

•Fighting against « Web dependance » (Weir) and « plagiarism ».

Promoting collaborative Web browsing

•The key to meaningful information is a “world-known-in-common”. Technologies need to be developed that are supportive of collaboratively defined institutional matters of relevance (Harper)

•Activity - defined as action in a social context - is the framework in which information and communication are meaningful : Web browsing always takes place within a broader activity.

•Nestor incorporates a set of IRC based features that allow CSCW.

From information to knowledge with Nestor

•A three stage activity :

Individual workstep1 : gathering information into maps

step2 : incorporating personal content into the mapsstep3 : organizing information

Collaborative workstep4 : collaborating with others : joint navigation, sharing maps, tutoring.

•A “spiralling” process (Bruner)

Hands-on computers

•We have INTRANET access only (no Internet)

•You have access to a set of imported Web sites :

•Navigation is restricted to Intranet :

Individual work : Step 1 : gathering information into maps

•1-a Go to Intranet home page

•1-b Navigate through Intranet Web sites

•1-c Arrange the map layout

•1-d Customize the map icons, colors, links and labels

•1-e Save the map

•1-f Navigate directly from the map

•1-g Paste information in the bag

•1-h Paste the bag into the map

•1-i Create keywords

•1-j Check keywords while navigating

Individual work : Step 2 : incorporating personal content into the maps

•2-a Create annotations

•2-b Insert a text highlight

•2-c Edit annotation content

•2-d Create new documents

•2-e Edit document content

•2-f Create new links

Individual work : Step 3 : organizing information

•3-a Clusteringselect an areacreate the area object (pop up menu)move the entire areaadd additional objects into the area

•3-b Orderingcreate linksselect a link pathcreate the « tour » object

•3-c Semantizing

Collaborative work : Step 4 : collaborating with others

•4-a Communicatingconnect through IRCsend a message to others

•4-b Navigating togetherstart joint navigation with a selected userstop

•4-c Sharing objectssend an URL to otherssend your map to a selected user

•4-d Managing collaborative worknotify others about your current activityparticipate to a collaborative decision making
