2021 TERM 2 WEEK 2 Dear North Fremantle Community, We had a great start back to term after the holidays. It was great to see students and parents with refreshed faces ready for our 11 week term. I was a little emotional during our ANZAC Service watching our whole school demonstrate such respect and engagement during the service. I was particularly proud of our Student Councillors who put a lot of effort into writing and practising their parts. Special thank you to our invited guests and Mrs Wilmott for leading this very moving service. It was disappointing that the community service did not go ahead over the weekend but we were grateful that we managed to host a service at NFPS. We are all experiencing first hand how quickly situations can change with our three day snap lockdown. Our plan was to have parents on roster in the classrooms this term; this has quickly been shut back down due to the restrictions and operational guidelines outlined by the Department of Education. We are hopeful that the process of stepping down the restrictions will mean that very soon classroom teachers will be sending out invitations and rosters for classroom assistance. Thank you to everyone for your understanding, for wearing your masks and following good hand and respiratory hygiene practices. At this stage we will continue to plan for the events that are scheduled for this term. Please remember to keep connected to Connect as we will update you as soon as possible if there are any changes. If you are experiencing difficulties with Connect, please contact the office and we can assist you. EDU-DANCE Thank you to everyone for supporting our students to attend Edu-Dance. It is great to hear the music pumping and see the students all engaged in the program. Having seen the students participate in this program over a few years it is great to see the skill levels and confidence increase. We are looking forward to our concert later in the term. Dear North Fremantle Community,

We had a great start back to term after the holidays. It was great to see students and parents with refreshed faces ready for our 11 week term. I was a little emotional during our ANZAC Service watching our whole school demonstrate such respect and engagement during the service. SCHOOL EVENTS This term staff have been busy preparing two significant events to take the students in Pre Primary to Year 6 on an excursion to the Museum and later in the term to Kings Park. These will be great opportunities for the students to engage in learning beyond the walls of the classroom and learn more about our world. Thank you in anticipation of parent support to complete forms and make payments as soon as possible. If you are ever unsure if you have credit in your activity account please contact the office.

P&C Thank you to families who have given donations for our Mother’s Day stall. The P&C is still accepting donations and will be calling for volunteers to support the students as they create and select items. Stay tuned to Connect messages for information about this event. Please remember to send $3 with your Kindy child on Wednesday 5 May and PP-Year 6 child on Friday 7 May.

Reminder that there is a P&C general meeting scheduled for Tuesday 4 May which will be hosted in Room 6. We are hopeful for some new faces to join the team and help to support our school.

KINDERGARTEN 2022 Can you believe that we are writing 2022 already? We have begun accepting Kindergarten Enrolments for 2022. If you are a parent, or know of a parent, with a child who is turning 4 years of age before 30th June 2022 (born between July 1 2017 and June 30 2018), please be aware that they are eligible to attend Kindergarten in 2022. Application for Enrolment forms can be obtained from our school’s website or the School Office. When submitting your Kindergarten application, you will need to present your child’s birth certificate, any visa documentation and a copy of their AIR (Australian Immunisation Register) History Statement. You can obtain a copy by phoning AIR on 1800 653 809, emailing [email protected], or from Medicare. We also require proof of your residential address. Please enrol your child as soon as you can. Applications close on 23 July 2021 (the first Friday of Term 3).

At this stage we are still planning to run our scheduled ‘Play and Learn’ mornings during this term. These sessions provide opportunities for future students and families to make contact and experience a little bit of Kindergarten. Our first ‘Play and Learn’ date is Monday 17th May at 9.00am-10.00am. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested and ask them to call the school to register for this event. This will enable us to track numbers, make contact and support COVID restrictions that apply at this time.

Today we shine the spotlight on all of our classes as the staff share a little about the teaching and learning that will be occurring in their classrooms during this term. We hope that you enjoy reading this information and supporting your child/children.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . Classrooms

ROOM 1 Mrs Lisa Miller

Welcome back to all our families. The children have come back relaxed, refreshed and ready to go.

This term our theme is Wheels, Wings and Other Things and focuses on transport and how machines work which is part of our whole school focus. It is going to be a fun theme with lots of modes of transport to be explored, experiments to be carried out and activities to be done.

We have a dramatic play area that has started as a travel agent/airport/aeroplane and will change every few weeks to reflect a different mode of transport and we will be creating a mural on our back wall which will be a work in progress as the term continues.

This term our focus in English will be on syllables. We will learn how to identify, blend and segment words. Maths is all about recognising numerals in order to 10, comparing collections using the language more than, less than or the same as and sorting, classifying and matching objects according to different attributes such as size, shape and colour. Working on our class mural will allow us to explore different ways of creating models and doing things as part of our Arts program and through Science we will be focusing on the Environment and Sustainability.

It will be a busy term in Kindy but we are looking forward to the challenge!

ROOM 2 Mrs Renay Knowles

Room 2 have made a wonderful start to the term. Last Tuesday we participated in Edu-Dance and had the best time learning new dance moves with Miss Jenna. The Pre Primaries also attended their first Anzac assembly and participated in a wide range of activities focusing on Anzac Day. This term in English we will continue to develop our Letters and Sounds knowledge and put this in to practice with a wide range of reading and writing activities. Rosie’s Walk and The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly are just some of the stories we will be reading together to develop and enrich our comprehension and vocabulary skills.

In Maths we will continue to develop our number sense, oral counting, subitising and one-to-one counting of small groups of objects. In HASS we will explore our history and investigate stories of families and the past and during Science we will have a focus on how daily and seasonal changes in our environment affect everyday life. As well as in class learning, we are extremely excited to be catching a bus and attending the WA Museum with the Year 4/5 class in just a few weeks. Room 2 are lucky enough to have some extra helpers this term with Miss Avalon joining us from Notre Dame University for a ten week teaching practice and Mrs Nikki Blowers helping us in and out of the classroom to support our learning. The

staff and children of Room 2 are looking forward to another busy, yet fun-filled term of growth and learning!

ROOM 3 Mrs Trisha Duffy

We have had a great first week back at school and the students were so excited to learn their new dance moves in Edu-Dance.

In Literacy this term we will continue to practise blending and segmenting in order to read and spell two-syllable words and phrases. We will revise all letters and sounds and learn letter names. In writing our focus will be on retelling familiar events and describing characters in stories.

Our Mathematical focus is on developing understanding of teen numbers, addition problems, money, time and direction. In Science our theme is Chemical Sciences Bend It Stretch It! where we will explore the properties of a range of objects and materials.

In History we will continue our unit on past, present and future looking at family life in the past and today. In Digital Technology we will explore and learn about algorithms using bee bots and solving simple problems.

Page 4: 2021 TERM 2 WEEK 2

ROOM 4 Mrs Susie Grigson

It is great to see everyone back and happy. Literacy activities this term include editing short passages for basic sentence punctuation, guided reading using levelled texts to increase fluency, target vocabulary building, locate weekly phonic sounds and demonstrate grammar understandings. Students will write to inform, persuade and entertain their readers. Maths lessons include identifying and describing number patterns, comparing and measuring length, volume and mass, using near doubles and

bridging to ten to solve addition and subtraction problems, and investigating and naming two-dimensional shapes.

During Chemical Science and Technology lessons, we will explore the characteristics and properties of materials and how different materials can be combined for a particular purpose. In Geography we will investigate the connections of people in Australia to the Asian region and across the world through family, trade, travel and natural disasters. We will learn ways in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people maintain connections to their Country. Health lessons will include learning strategies to use when help is needed and behaviours that promote health and well-being.

ROOM 5 Miss Monique Weinman

Room 5 is back into the swing of things again, kicking off term 2 at full speed. In our classroom this week we have begun spelling rotations using the word lists from Homework Hound and putting these words into practise by playing Bananagrams, Pictureman, Upwords, Stamp it and Rainbow words. Our word of the week "buoyancy" was drawn from our topic language from Science. We have a real focus for understanding the meaning behind the words and what sounds could be used to try and spell them. We are trying to build student's background knowledge and vocabulary understanding in addition to teaching spelling rules and strategies.

Our reading rotations are incorporating lots of inference skills this fortnight, using our comprehension and fluency passages to think critically about the texts we read and make connections to the world, the author and themselves as a reader to help build understanding. We are playing Taboo, Pictionary and Charades to develop our vocabulary and conversation/connection skills. Writing rotations are looking at whole language, with an integration of the texts we are reading, topics we cover and using mentor texts to teach using specific examples. This fortnight we are writing letters to Albert (and we will scan and email them to his family). We are trying to learn lots about grammar, in particular nouns, verbs and adjectives to build better sentences.

In Science this fortnight we are looking at upthrust, buoyancy, gravity and wind motion in our Forces unit, with a focus on boats, ships and sailboats. We are comparing how different materials (alfoil, cardboard and paper) float and behave differently in/on water. We are gathering ideas and understanding of how we can build boats with suitable materials and hope to make them move. If students could begin collecting milk cartons/coconut water cartons / milk bottles with lids on/ skewers or long twigs we will be using these items next week to build boats. We are going to try and get our

boats to move using wind power and creating sails (or using kinetic wind propulsion).

Later on this term our Integrated Projects topic will be Camping and Farming in the Australian Outback. Our student teacher, Mr Harvey Goulding, is from Busselton and lives on a farm so we are using his life back home as inspiration for our learning. We will be learning about Australian geography and history, life on a farm, life in the outback, bush camping principles, Noongar seasons, bush tucker and sustainable use of natural resources. If you have any books, personal artefacts or camping supplies that you are happy for our class to have a look at please bring them in from Week 3.

Page 5: 2021 TERM 2 WEEK 2

ROOM 6 Mrs Carolynne Thomas Term 2 has begun with a flying start. Each morning before class begins we practice Wellbeing Techniques. One way is by teaching each other how to knit. According to the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, knitting has significant psychological and social benefits which can contribute to wellbeing and quality of life.

This term we will be focusing on History and discussing Australia’s First People and the impact of European migration. We will also be looking closely at the history of Fremantle and what has shaped our wonderful, enchanting, diverse city.

This term is all about persuasive writing and we are learning how to manipulate language to produce text to convince the audience that our opinion/viewpoint is always the best and only choice! Our Health focus is on Protective Behaviours and resilience while our Science topic will be Biological Science and studying how animals and plants adapt to survive against all odds. We are also looking forward to our whole school excursions to the Perth Museum and Kings Park to support our History learning. Doesn’t that sound extremely educational? Did you pick the persuasive language conventions used above? Rhetorical question, alliteration, the rule of three, high modality words, research, facts.

ROOM 7 Mr Heath Adams

I was going to say that it was nice to start Term 2 without a lockdown but I would have spoken too soon apparently. Fortunately, it hasn’t had an impact on our curriculum in an always too busy Term 2. Year 5 students have their NAPLAN tests to look forward to in a few weeks time, of course. And as this is a reporting term, we’ll be rushing to get work finished towards the tail end. On top of that, it is 11 weeks — and that after a short 8 week term! — which will feel like a marathon by the end, I’m sure.

In English this term, we will be concentrating on Pathos, or the use of emotive language to persuade and entertain others. We’ll read creation myths from around the world and have formal, class debates to extend our persuasive speaking skills.

In Mathematics, we have already begun to move beyond mere arithmetic and measurement, and discover patterns in our number systems as we develop our pre-algebraic understandings. We will also be developing our ability to convert between different units of measurements, so if you have opportunities to provide examples of this at home — cooking, renovating etc. — that would be great for the students.

In Science, we are just about to complete our work on Chemical Sciences and will change to Biological Sciences. Both Year 5 and Year 6 students will develop their understanding of evolution: Year 5 students primarily in native flora and fauna; Year 6 students in microbiology.

In Humanities and Social Sciences, we are studying Australian history. In particular, the Year 5 students are looking at the Swan River Colony and the Year 6 students are looking at Federation. They are currently working on a research task that may require some work at home.

In Technologies, we will be focusing on our Semester 1 theme of robots, and students are already beginning to tackle the very difficult concept of representing values in binary codes.

Please keep an eye on your child’s diaries. I ask them to take them home each Friday, updated with the expectations for the week ahead (tests, homework, notes due, excursions, events etc.), and I would appreciate it if you could assist the development of their organisational skills by checking it regularly and signing it on Thursday night.

Languages: Madame McIntosh Bonjour à tous! Hello everyone! Bon retour parmi nous! Welcome back!

This Term the Pre Primary students will be learning how to say what their name is, how old they are, respond to basic instructions, numbers 0 -10, basic colours and how to express basic feelings. Year One students will be learning how to express emotions, how to say how old they are, to say when their birthday is, numbers 0-20, saying where they live, talking about their family and acting out “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” which leads us into revising days of the week and learning some foods. Year Two students will expand on the theme of days of the week to say what they like to do on those days, they will use their knowledge of numbers 0-31 to say how old they are and talk about their birthdays, present basic weather forecasts, ask for basic foods and drinks at the café, use simple adjectives to describe people and objects and begin to use prepositions to describe their location.

Years 3 – 6 students will continue to be taught using the AIM programme which is highly immersive using gestures which incorporates the acting out of a play. Alongside the AIM programme, topics covered in Year 3/4 include, morning routines, family members, describing breakfasts, transport, telling the time to the hour and half past, developing number knowledge from 0-100, using an increasing number of adjectives and interactive experiences to encourage role play. In Year 4/5, topics include describing their house, increased use of adjectives and prepositions, describing town features, asking for and giving directions, role play opportunities at the market and use of numbers 0-100.

In Year 5/6, topics include, leisure time, likes and dislikes around hobbies, role play conversations based around towns and countries, research tasks based around francophone countries and looking at similarities and differences between them.

Art: Mrs Campbell

In Term 2 there will be a range of skills and equipment that students will be using in the art room. The Pre Primary students will be drawing and creating a background for their very own Gruffalo. They will be experimenting with printmaking to create a background forest for the Gruffalo. The Year Ones have made speckled clay eggs for their nests that they have woven out of raffia, next they will be starting their textiles project which will include sewing. The Year Two and Three students will be creating a whole class art piece involving circular weaving with wool. The middle and upper students will be learning the many techniques of applying soft pastels and how these techniques can be applied to create a portrait of a person or an animal.

Chaplain: Mrs Joan Huang

Hello NFPS! Did you know that there is a strong relationship between resilience (wellbeing) and learning engagement? Based on a survey by Resilient Youth Australia, we are doing better at helping and supporting students with their mental health. The percentage of Australian primary school students affected by mental health issues dropped from 26.2% to 24% between 2015 and 2018.

Chaplaincy services this term will have a heavy emphasis on the resilience and wellbeing program for our Year 6 girls. The program aims to help students to develop personal and social skills. Some topics that will be discussed include communication and gossip, managing emotions, dealing with conflict and cyber bullying.

Cultivating resilience skills takes time and effort. It is important to create a safe environment to help our students practise those skills and assure them that they are well supported. Attached are some information sheets with ideas on building your child’s resilience and personal and social capability skills at home.

Congratulation to our Regis Award winner, Amelie, left, pictured with Jeanette from Regis and Aussie of the Month winner, Clancy. Well done!

ANZAC Day School Service

On April 22nd we were very proud of our Year 6 Student Councillors as they thoughtfully and confidently conducted the school's ANZAC Service. Thank you to families who provided flowers from your gardens to create our floral tribute. Many thanks to all staff at NFPS and our fabulous students for their contributions to our ANZAC ceremony.

The president and vice president of the Fremantle RSL, Mr Brian Firns and Mr Les Butt, in addition to Mr Rob Fittock from the FRSL, a long-time supporter of our school, also attended and laid wreaths. A touching highlight was the playing of The Last Post and Rouse by bugler, Ms Karen Lees.

On ANZAC Day itself, Ptolemy and Tabitha had been invited to address the North Fremantle Service at the Fallen Soldiers Memorial Park. We share the disappointment of the community of this event being cancelled due to COVID.

North Fremantle Primary School – Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to Warding for their win at the swimming carnival held on Thursday April 1st at the Fremantle Leisure Centre. We would like to thank parent and guardian volunteers – the afternoon ran very smoothly with your help and support. Thank you also to Mrs Thomas and staff for their organisation and support. North Fremantle Primary School – Play and Learn

Please help spread the word – Kindy enrolments for 2022 are now open! Our Play and Learn sessions are an interactive Kindergarten experience in preparation for Kindy 2022. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested and ask them to call the school on 9432 1300 to register for this event. This will enable us to track numbers, make contact and support COVID restrictions that apply at this time.

Positive Schools Communicating effectively with your children

It is important to discuss bullying with your children on a regular basis. Regular communication with a person they trust and

respect will help them form their own opinions and beliefs about bullying. Your children will also feel more comfortable

telling you if they are being bullied.

Consider trying some of these ideas to improve the way you talk with your children about tricky issues.

Sit shoulder-to-shoulder or walk with your child as you talk

• Talking face-to-face can be quite confrontational, particularly for boys. Sitting or walking side by side will

encourage both you and your child to talk freely.

Use open-ended questions

• It is easy to ask your child if they had a good day or if they would like toast for breakfast; however these

questions only require a yes or no answer.

• Try asking questions such as “What did you do today?” or “What would you like for breakfast?” These types of

questions encourage discussion between you and your child.

Talk with your children about what to do rather than what not to do

• It is common for us to focus on negative behaviour, such as “don’t step in that puddle” or “stop swinging on your

chair”.

• Try telling your children what you would like them to do rather than what you don’t want them to do.

• You can do this by using positive statements such as “please step over the puddle” or “please put the chair legs

on the floor”.
