Offering Prayers BREAKFAST Beyond words, beyond thoughts, wisdom transcendent: Beyond birth, beyond death, space’s quintessence. Experienced by deeply self-aware jnana, O mother of the Victors past, present, and future, I make this offering to you. Deity whose practice I perform in all my lifetimes, You who embody all enlightened action Of the victors of the past, present, and future, You are swift, you are peaceful and brave, Great Mother, flourishing a blue lotus flower, I make this offering to you. I offer this undefiled amrita To the deities, nagas, and lords of this place— Please accomplish the wishes of yogis and acharyas, And perform the enlightened activity of helping the Buddha’s teachings to flourish. LUNCH To the unsurpassable teacher, the precious Buddha, To the unsurpassable protector, the precious genuine Dharma, And to the unsurpassable guide, the precious Sangha— To the sources of refuge, the three rare and supreme jewels, I make this offering. DINNER By offering this ganachakra In the mandala of Vajrasattva, May I and all wandering beings, Be established in this same mandala. CANDLE FLAME OFFERING By offering this shining candle flame, To the ten directions’ Victors and their heirs May all beings’ dark ignorance be dispelled, May the shining light of knowledge and wisdom grow. Translated by Ari Goldfield and Rose Taylor.

Refuge and Dedication Prayers Within you, in your natural emptiness, An expanse beyond fabrication, Shine illusory scenes of existence, Both luminous and profound. You are connate bliss and emptiness As you have and always will be, Present as the nature of everything— I bow to natural mind. May the auspiciousness of body—majestic and unchanging —be present. May the auspiciousness of speech—endowed with sixty qualities—be present. May the auspiciousness of mind—immaculate and free from extremes—be present. May the auspiciousness of the Victors’ body, speech, and mind be present. In this place, may there be happiness and excellence day and night, May there be happiness and excellence at midday, May there be happiness and excellence all day and all night, May the auspiciousness of the three rare and supreme ones be present. May we live long and be free of illness, Enjoy freedom, great resources, and happiness. Next life, may we meet in the pure realm, May we always practice Dharma and benefit beings. By this merit, may I swiftly accomplish The level of the Noble Liberator Tara, And having done so, may I establish in that same state All wandering beings without exception. Om Tare Tutare Ture Soha

Milarepa’s Song of the Eighteen Kinds of Yogic Joy I bow at the feet of the genuine guru Because of merit gathered I’ve met this lord The guru with his prophecy is what has brought me here My comfortable castle this wooded mountain range This is a meadowland so beautiful in bloom The trees are dancing in the midst of all the trees

This is a place of play where the monkeys and the langurs play A place where birds speak in bird-like tongues A land of flying bees on gentle wings Where day runs into night and rainbow paintings shine Summer runs into winter a light drizzle falls Autumn runs into springtime the mist comes rolling in

In a solitary place like this I, the yogi Milarepa Am feeling very clear light well meditating on emptiness mind When I get a lot of stuff coming up I feel extremely well When the highs roll into lows feels even better still Feels so good to be a human being without the karmic deeds When confusion gets complicated I feel extremely well

Fearsome visions getting worse and worse feels even better still Kleshas, birth and death and freedom from those is a good way to feel With the bullies getting worse and worse I feel extremely well When there’s not a painful illness in sight feels even better still The suffering being bliss feels so good that feeling bad feels good Since the trulkhor comes from what I am it feels extremely good

To leap and run about is dance feels even better still To be a king of speech with a treasury of song feels good That the words are like the buzzing of bees feels extremely good That the sound it makes is merit collecting feels even better still The bliss is good in the expanse of the confidence of strength of mind What develops on its own by its own force feels extremely good

What comes out looking like a hodgepodge feels even better still This happy experience song by a yogi carefree Is for you who believe in what you’re doing here To take along with you when you go —translated by Jim Scott.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Harold Arlen (music) and Yip Harburg (lyrics)—Iz version

Somewhere over the rainbow, Way up high And the dreams that you dream of Once in a lullaby Oh, somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly And the dream that you dream of, Dreams really do come true Someday I’ll wish upon a star Wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where trouble melts like lemon drops High above the chimney tops That’s where you’ll find me Oh, somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly And the dream that you dare to, Why, oh why can’t I? Someday I’ll wish upon a star Wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where trouble melts like lemon drops High above the chimney tops That’s where you’ll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Way up high And the dream that you dare to, Why, oh why can’t I?

Across the Universe Words are flowing out Like endless rain into a paper cup They slither while they pass They slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow waves of joy Are drifting through my open mind Possessing and caressing me Jai Guru Deva, Om Nothing’s gonna change my world x4 Images of broken light Which dance before me like a million eyes They call me on and on across the universe Thoughts meander like a restless wind Inside a letter box They tumble blindly as they make their way Across the universe Jai Guru Deva, Om Nothing’s gonna change my world x4 Sounds of laughter shades of life Are ringing through my opened ears Inciting and inviting me Limitless undying love Which shines around me like a million suns And calls me on and on across the universe Jai Guru Deva, Om Nothing’s gonna change my world x4, Jai Guru Deva x4

Let It Be When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the broken-hearted people Living in the world agree There will be an answer, let it be. But though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see There will be an answer, let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the night is cloudy There is still a light that shines on me Shine until tomorrow, let it be. I wake up to the sound of music Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Rest in the Fresh, by Guru Rinpoche

This fresh and present consciousness: In essence, emptiness, Dharmakaya In nature, luminous, Sambhogakaya In manifestation, uninhibited, Nirmanakaya And buddha is nowhere else. When you hold the view, when you don’t, Please rest in the fresh. When you’re agitated, when you’re not, Please rest in the fresh. When you’re centered, when you’re not, Please rest in the fresh. When you’re meditating, when you’re not, Please rest in the fresh. When you’re distracted, when you’re not, Please rest in the fresh. So whatever happens, it can rest in the fresh, And being feels radiant, like a sparkling sea. Spontaneously blissful, Spontaneously luminous, Spontaneously inconceivable.

Verses for the Three Centers

ORIGIN POINT

Home is the place where, when you have to go there, They have to take you in.

—Robert Frost

All conceptual focus dissolves All fabrications are at peace The Buddha did not at any time Teach the Dharma to anyone

—Nagarjuna

At the point when there is neither thing nor non-thing To occupy a place before the mind At that point there is no projected image This lack of reference point is perfect peace.

Because they are not real they are not empty Because there is no thing there is no non-thing Free of speculation in pure being Just rest relaxed without a reference point

—Shantideva (Jim Scott, trans)

Beyond words, beyond thoughts, wisdom transcendent: Beyond birth, beyond death, space’s quintessence. Experienced by deeply self-aware jnana, O mother of the Victors past, present, and future, I open now to you.

—Praise by Rahula HEART

Our wheel in samsara turns and turns, While turning, our core remains unstained. Appearance is empty of real effect, Appearance is kayas’ richness manifest.

—Jamgön Kongtrül

Page 17: 2020 Retreat Booklet - wisdomsun.org

At the core of experience is Dharmakaya, Ineffable while manifesting as everything. As I open my heart to your loving blessing, Without impedance, may my experience be playful, And may I realize samsara and nirvana are inseparable.

—Kagyü Lineage Supplication

Whatever the test, love can pass it. However intense the feeling, love is stronger. However hard it is to hold, love can hold it. —Ari Goldfield

HEAD No names, no types, no thoughts of others— Direct valid cognition, Nonconceptual. —Dignaga Even confused thoughts themselves are clear light that shines so brilliantly, Experiences so bright like sun and moonlight, Without any direction, clarity shines timelessly, You cannot find it, so you can’t say what it is. —Milarepa A variety of appearances is shining outside— You teach us how to know they are illusory, And awareness meets its mother, pure reality. The movements of the mind, its magical display, Like waves in the ocean, dissolve in their own place.

—Sahle Ö

This great variety is mind’s magic display But we can’t show that mind is “this” or “that” So samsara has no ground and nirvana has no root And this is dharmakaya, you should know!

—Nyimay Tsal

From Walking, by Henry David Thoreau

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks—who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering, which word is beautifully derived “from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretense of going a la SainteTerre,” to the Holy Land, till the children exclaimed, “There goes a Sainte-Terrer,” a Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering. He who sits still in a house all the time may be the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer, in the good sense, is no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all the while sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea…. It is true, we are but faint-hearted crusaders, even the walkers, nowadays, who undertake no persevering, never-ending enterprises. Our expeditions are but tours, and come round again at evening to the old hearthside from which we set out. Half the walk is but retracing our steps. We should go forth on the shortest walk, perchance, in the spirit of undying adventure, never to return, prepared to send back our embalmed hearts only as relics to our desolate kingdoms. If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again—if you have paid your debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free man—then you are ready for a walk.

Those undertaking hardships for the dharma’s sake Build up merit far too great to tell Those who inspire others to take up this call Their kindness stretches far too far to tell For those who hear of this austere way to live Blessings gather far too high to pile These are three qualities beyond all measurement And through the blessing of these three may merely hearing set them free By merely wishing may their wish come true And may all those places where I’ve settled for a while Be sites of joy and comfort to the mind And all of my possessions, however few they be Wherever they end up may they bring joy And just as the elementary principles Of earth and water, fire, wind and space Are everywhere you go, may I be just like that as well May I be everywhere that you might go May nagas, gods, and so on, in their eight battalion ranks And lokapalas and all hordes of fiends May they not wreak their havoc even for an instant’s time Their every wish fulfilled to dharma true May every creature down to the smallest worm Fall into samsara never more For each and every one without a single one left out May I be there to lead them on their way Translated by Jim Scott.
