MICHELIN AND SIMULATORS

Michelin Motorsport’s cutting-edge work in the fields of simulators, virtual design and digital modelling and performance analysis allows it to carry out virtual tests of the same quality as real-life tests.

Thanks to simulators, motorsport can assist the Michelin Group ahead of the industrialisation phase, help to resolve manufacturing-related problematics and save time during tyre development.

MICHELIN AND THE (REAL) LE MANS 24 HOURS

Michelin won the very first Le Mans 24 Hours which was held in 1923.

Michelin is currently on a record-breaking unbeaten run of 22 Le Mans wins since 1998.

Michelin has won Le Mans with 10 different car manufacturers and 46 different drivers.

Michelin helped to establish the record for the longest distance covered in the course of the Le Mans 24 Hours (5,410.71km).

The fastest ever lap at Le Mans in terms of average speed was posted on Michelin tyres (251.88kph).

In 2018, ex-Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button completed 750km at Le Mans on the same set of Michelin tyres. That’s equivalent to more than two F1 grands prix!

Through the intermediary of Symbio, the joint venture it has formed with the automotive equipment manufacturer Faurecia, Groupe Michelin has become a preferential partner of the MissionH24 project which seeks to accelerate the development of zero-emissions mobility thanks to the use of fuel cell technology in endurance racing.

The Michelin-equipped, fuel-cell-powered MissionH24 prototype will play an active role as the inaugural Le Mans 24 Hours Virtual’s official Lead and Safety Car. This trailblazing electric car will effectively lead the way for the 50 teams on the grid, made up of professional racing drivers and eSports specialists.

Behind the virtual wheel will be the project’s development driver Olivier Lombard and sim racer Aurélien Mallet. The LMPH2G prototype will also serve as Safety Car during the race.

brand’s promotions strategy.

In 2019, eSports attracted 458.8

million viewers, including 200

million who described themselves as

frequent players.

Michelin has considerable

expertise in the fields of simulator

technology and virtual tyres. By

sharing this knowhow, Michelin is

able to help computer programmers

produce the algorithms required to

replicate the characteristics of real

tyres in digital form.

MICHELIN and ENDURANCE racing

Endurance racing is embedded in Michelin’s DNA and serves as a high-tech lab that allows it to improve the long-lasting performance qualities of its tyres.

Michelin has long used endurance racing to evaluate and incubate landmark tyre innovations, including radial slicks in the 1970s.

A set of Michelin endurance racing tyres is today capable of completing up to five stints around Le Mans’ 13.626km circuit.

Michelin’s endurance racing tyres are engineered to combine versatility with lasting performance, even in extreme, challenging conditions (heat, abrasive track surfaces, etc.).

The lasting performance characteristics of the Michelin Pilot Sport Endurance range has seen the number of tyres used during the Le Mans 24 Hours come down by 25 percent over the past 15 years.

Michelin’s tyres are continuously pushing out the envelope. Audi driver Benoît Tréluyer saved 30 seconds by keeping the same set of Michelin tyres on his prototype for a fifth stint during the closing stages of the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours. He went on to win the race by a margin of 13 seconds!

In compliance with the regulations, the tyres supplied for the four-wheel drive hybrid Toyotas and two-wheel drive non-hybrid LM P1s at Le Mans are the same as 2018.
