Valedictorian TRAVIS WALTERS

I want to start by saying congratulations to everyone that has persevered and accomplished something special this year, take this moment, you have earned it. I wish I could be standing in front of you all for this speech, to be able to celebrate our accomplishments in this moment together. The last few months have been stressful, challenging, and scary. We have and still are facing a global pandemic unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes. Even in the face of that ever-present dark cloud we still stand here today better than we were, because of a unifying desire, the desire to be our best selves. You all chose to face adversity, to grow your minds and accept the challenge of seeking a better life and that deserves praise and admiration.

I started down this road that we are all walking because I wanted to see if I could find my limits here. After these two years I have discovered that the answer to that question still lies far off in the distance, I know that is also

the case for so many of you here as well. I have met so many incredible individuals, full of potential, energy, and heart. It has been nothing short of amazing to spend the last two years with you all.

I want to end by saying thank you. To you all for being part of this experience, for the perspectives you have brought and for the great things that are to come by your actions. I also want to give a special thanks to a few people that made my experience special. First is Sandra Efu, you are a fantastic instructor and inspiring role model. You constantly support me and push me to get involved and be my best self. Also, I want to thank Scarlett Chapman. Your overwhelming drive to succeed is something that leaves me in awe and makes me want to work harder and give more. I am unbelievably proud of you and I am honored that I get to experience this journey with you.

Thank you and congratulations.

Greetings from CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

On behalf of the Keyano College Board of Governors, I want to con-gratulate you on your achievement!

The past year started out like so many before it, for many of you, that meant the rekindling of old relationships, fostering new ones, and challenging yourself academically to reach your goals. However, our world has changed quickly. With the impacts of a Global Pandemic and the most recent flooding in our city, your academic year did not end like so many before it. But our community, and in particular our staff and student body have always demonstrated a resiliency in the face of adversity. The experiences you have today will become a part of who you are and how you face challenges in the future.

Our goal at Keyano College has always been to provide educational opportunities that are responsive to the need of our students, and to

empower them to face uncertainties that are currently shaping the future of our world.

You have met that goal today!

Your demonstrated commitment and drive will become the foundation of your future. I wish you the best as you embark on your next adventure. I am confident that not only have you grown academically during your time at Keyano College, but that you have also developed as a person and a as a proud member of our community.

Thank you for all your hard work, and on behalf of the Keyano College Board of Governors, we wish you well.

The future is yours! Reach out, grab it and hold on tight!

Greetings from INTERIM PRESIDENT & CEO

I would like to begin by acknow-ledging that we are on Treaty 8 Territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Dene, and Dane-zaa (Beaver), and Métis. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.

On behalf of Keyano College Administration, it is my extreme pleasure to bring greetings to the Convocation Class 2020. We acknowledge that this is not the Convocation Ceremony you imagined, but we wanted to provide an alternate way to celebrate your success and very important accomplishments. Thank you to College Administration, Student Support Services and a special thank you to our exceptional Faculty Staff for their instruction, mentorship and guidance on your journey here at Keyano College. We are all honoured to be a part of your success.

Greetings from VICE PRESIDENT ACADEMIC

Keyano Graduates

Each year during convocation, I reflect back on the year to see what made it special. There is no shortage of uniqueness about the year 2019-2020. Many challenges were thrown your way during this academic year. Trades programs were postponed, clinical and work placements were disrupted, and we thrusted ourselves forward into the new way of teaching and learning. In this process we met each other’s pets online as we learned in our PJs.

Through the support of our staff and faculty, and your families, you pivoted and persevered despite the challenges that nature brought your way. You are today, on a virtual stage, and at a virtual convocation. One thing that is not virtual is your success. It is very real; it is a true representation that nothing can keep you down. As Keyano College graduates, you came out on the other side of this with a certificate, a diploma, or a degree. Many of you even served the front lines, truly putting your education

to the test, and putting others who needed you first, before your own needs. What an accomplishment!

The year was full of great on campus energy, through new events like “Keyano’s Got Talent” and a continued successful run in our athletics department. Your involvement in college-based advocacy through the Student Association of Keyano College and your involvement on sports teams just shows how rounded you have become, and how ready you are to enter as productive members of the community and workplace.

If you could do this in the most challenging of times then what can you accomplish in the future and in your career. We are proud that you have graduated and are now Keyano alumni.

Greetings from PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION & CHAIR OF THE STUDENT GOVERNING BOARD

Hey, what’s up Huskies, it's your outgoing President of the Student Association of Keyano College for the 2019/2020 academic year. It’s been a very strenuous and unique time to graduate, maybe even enough that we can look back one day and reminisce and tell our future children and grandchildren that we were the product of a Pandemic. Yet with all the crisis’s that have happened we are still well and able, so congratulations

to all those who managed to secure their certificate, diploma or degree. I am graduate this year myself with a bachelor’s in business administration, and I am so very proud, and you should be as well. I would like to thank you for allowing me to be your President this year, I feel like I was able to bring some life, culture and laughter into the walls of Keyano College. I know that I did an outstanding job this year, and I guarantee that the new SAKC

executives will do even better. To finish it all off good luck in the future with whatever you’re doing and thank you again for an amazing year. God Bless and see you again soon Huskies. It was a pleasure being your voice and thank you for voting for me. Once again, I am Tyshaine Page, your out-going President.

Greetings from MAYOR DON SCOTT

It is my pleasure to congratulate the Keyano College Graduating Class of 2020!

While convocation is always an exciting time, this year, it takes on special meaning. You have the distinction of graduating at a unique time in history—not just for the people of our community, but for all of humanity. Our daily lives have changed dramatically in recent months as we’ve learned to adapt to life during a global pandemic and, locally, to come back after a one-in-100-year flood.

These are clearly unprecedented times and they are presenting us with an unexpected chance to do things differently—to do things better. As the Class of 2020, you will be at the forefront of these changes. You will bring your know-how, flexibility, and can-do attitude to help lead our society to better days ahead.

As you move forward in the next stages in your lives and careers, you will be well-served by your time at Keyano College. Now, more than ever, your experiences and knowledge, your perseverance and hard work, will prepare you to succeed in these dynamic times. Your resilience and ability to adapt to evolving

circumstances will help you make the most of the challenges and fresh opportunities that lie before you.

I want to thank you for choosing Wood Buffalo as the backdrop for your studies and I hope you will continue to see the incredible resources, opportunities and quality of life that are available in this region. I encourage you to consider building your career here—and applying your skills and experience to help make Wood Buffalo an even better place to call home.

While you may be celebrating your convocation virtually this year, I want you to know that your family, friends, mentors and community are proud of you and all you have accomplished so far. We applaud your hard work and commitment to achieving your goals. Above all, we wish you a long and fulfilling career that enriches your life and contributes to the success of your community.

Once again, I extend my sincere congratulations to the Keyano College Class of 2020. I wish you continued success in all your endeavours.

All the best,Don Scott, QC Mayor

Greetings from MLA - WOOD BUFFALO

Congratulations to the 2020 Keyano College Graduating Class.

I salute your accomplishment, and applaud your resolve in obtaining this well-earned milestone.

This year’s convocation, although unorthodox, is a conclusion designed to highlight several years of hard work through lectures, study, papers, tests and examinations. It is also a beginning of sorts, marking a new, yet unexplored chapter in your lives moving forward.

This graduation is yet another of the many achievements you have attained, and challenges you have faced, then conquered. These years of grind and struggle, of applying yourselves and persevering, have better prepared you for a competitive world, where you will be able to choose your own rewards.

When you leave Keyano College you take the knowledge and experience you have gained and apply it to many opportunities now open to you. But you also leave something of yourselves behind. You leave the spirit of your passage. It remains to reinforce the walls and the commitment of those who have helped prepare you.

It has been said that two of the hardest things in life, are to say hello for the first time, and goodbye for the last. Consider this a farewell until we meet again.

The memories and friendships you have made here, will accompany you wherever you go. Those are the things that do not hinge on distance or time, but depends on the strength of the heart.

As you travel forward, remember the lessons you have learned. Be the inspiration of those who follow you. Strive to widen the narrow perspectives you encounter. Continue to contribute to making the world a better place. Anything worth doing, is worth doing well.

Once again, I offer my congratulations to each and every one of you. As you move forward remember that the most significant battles are hard won. When a door closes, another one inevitably opens. Do not dwell too long on the closing doors, as you may miss the ones opening before you.

Tany Yao, MLA Fort McMurray – Wood Buffalo

Greetings from MLA- LAC LA BICHE

Dear Keyano College Graduating class of 2020:

Congratulations to the class of 2020 on this huge milestone in your life—your success is celebrated among your friends and family members.

These are undoubtedly challenging times, but this is not the only memory you should leave with as you go out into the world.

When you look back, remember how you made it here—3 a.m. coffee runs during an all-nighter; studying with people who would become lifelong friends; putting your all into your academics, and investing in your future.

You all started out at Keyano College as strangers looking to further your education, but through your shared academic trials, frustrations, and huge successes, you’ve created a community.

When you meet up with old classmates you’ll be able to reminisce about your shared experiences and time here.

You’re our future—the accomplish-ments you make in your life will make the world a better place. Dream big, because with hard work you can truly do anything.

During your next adventure, don’t forget to ask questions, take risks, and make mistakes, but always be learning.

Take the skills you’ve worked hard to acquire at Keyano, and use them to your advantage every day.

I want to wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Laila Goodridge, MLA Fort McMurray – Lac La Biche

Greetings from MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

As your Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray – Cold Lake, it is a great honour for me to offer you my sincere congratulations at your convocation ceremony. All your hard work over the past few years has led up to this moment and it’s just the beginning of your future.

While you may not be able to meet in person today due to COVID-19, we are living in exceptional times where your educators have made it possible for you to attend your convocation ceremony virtually. Despite being at home, today is a joyful occasion as you celebrate your accomplishments and reflect on all your achievements both as students and as young adults. Today is also a day of appreciation as you recall the support from mentors, friends, and family who have helped you along the way. They will remain an important part of your learning journey going forward.

Learning does not stop after you receive a diploma. The lessons you learned at Keyano College will be carried with you for the rest of your life. Every student should embrace lifelong learning. I highly encourage all of you to continue to learn and seek out new challenges not as obstacles, but as ways for you to better develop as a person. Your time at Keyano College has prepared you for what lies ahead.
