NOTING THE VOLUNTEERSThe Tennessee baseball team will close out the 2011 campaign this weekend with a three-game series

against Auburn at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, Thursday through Saturday. The first two games are set to start at 6 p.m. and first pitch for the series finale will be at 2 p.m. Prior to Saturdays contest, the Big Orange will honor its five seniors Rob Catapano, Matt Duffy, Tyler Horne, Josh Liles and Khayyan Norfork.

Liles enters the weekend right on the verge of moving into the record book in a wide variety of career records for the Big Orange. Already 10th in games played, one more contest will move him into a tie with Chris Burke at 186 for the ninth-most in school history. One more at-bat, meanwhile, will place him in a tie with J.P. Arencibia for 10th all-time with 690. Five more ABs would move him past Jeff Pickler (691) and Justin Parker (693) and give him sole possession of eighth on that chart. One more sacrifice fly would also tie him for 10th and finally, Liles could become just the 15th player in Tennessee history to record 200 career hits if he can record five this weekend.

The Vols will go with junior southpaw Steven Gruver (4-7, 4.08) on Thursday night and sophomore righthander Nick Blount (1-4, 5.52) on Friday. Saturday's starter is still yet to be determined.

SCOUTING THE TIGERSAuburn enters the final weekend of the SEC season in a four-way tie for first in the SEC West and will face

Tennessee in the final weekend. Auburn holds the tie-breaker on four of the five other SEC West teams with the lone exception being Mississippi State.

In order to clinch a spot in next week's SEC Tournament, Auburn needs to win just once in Knoxville. Two wins over the weekend will also insure Auburn of an above .500 record post-SEC Tournament, which is the requirement for an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.

Auburn is trying to capture a second straight SEC West title, a feat it hasn't accomplished since 1964-65 when it won back-to-back SEC East crowns. Auburn is also trying to clinch a second straight SEC Tournament berth, something it hasn't done since it went seven consecutive years from 1997-2003 .

Freshman RHP Dillon Ortman picked up a win and a save in the doubleheader sweep of Alabama, getting the win in the first game and the save in the second. In 3.0 innings, he allowed a run on four hits while striking out three without walking a batter. Senior outfielder Justin Fradejas is on a tear of late, collecting a multi-hit game in 10 of the last 15 games he has played in, upping his average from .295 to .327. Auburn is 78-34 all-time against Tennessee and 33-15 in Knoxville, winning its last five series there.

Auburn (28-25, 13-14 SEC) will employ the same rotation it has used over the last few weekends, starting Jr. RHP Jon Luke Jacobs (1-3, 3.44) on Thursday and Jr. RHP Derek Varnadore (5-2, 3.60) on Friday while waiting to determine its Saturday starter.

MEDIA INFORMATIONMedia CredentialsMedia credentials will be issued to members of the

working media only. Children and other non-workers will not be allowed. Requests for credentials should be made by calling Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris at least one day in advance of each home game or series. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations Office will be left at the ticket will call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Interview PolicyPlayers and coaches are available for interviews during

weekly media opportunities or by appointment arranged through Assistant Media Relations Director Cameron Harris.

Interviews with coaches or players while the team is on the road also should be arranged through Cameron Harris.

Postgame InterviewsTennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is available to meet

any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media mem-bers are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting teams media relations representative.

PhotographersMedia credentials are required for all photographers and

television media. All credentials not picked up at the Media Relations office will be left at the ticket will-call window at the main entrance of the stadium.

Photo decks are located atop the stairwells behind the first- and third-baselines. There are also photo field-level photo wells at the far end of each dugout. Both still and television photographers are welcome to shoot from these spots. Television crews are welcome to film from the mezzanine level underneath the press box.

Photographers will not be permitted in or between the dugouts.

The Press BoxThe Lindsey Nelson Stadium press box is for working

members of the media only. The press box is located atop the grandstand behind home plate and includes space for working members of the press, official and visiting scor-ers, public address announcer and scoreboard operator. Also located on the press level are two radio booths and a television/VIP booth. Admission to the press box is by credential only.

Press Box ServicesUpdated cumulative statistics, game notes and score-

cards, along with team rosters, will be available in the press box at each home game. A final box score will be compiled and distributed at the completion of each game.

An official scorer is assigned to all home games, and Cameron Harris will keep the media informed of all scoring decisions, notable facts and records.

Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his fourth season at Rocky Top after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons. While at UT, Raleigh has had 12 players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in both 2009 and 2010, and two more sign free-agent contracts following the completion of their eligibility. Nine of those players were drafted in the top-20

rounds, highlighted by 2009 first-round selection Kentrail Davis. In 19 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 45 MLB draft picks and 63 professional players.

Under Raleigh's guidance, the Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three sea-sons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Raleighs squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleighs clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference champion-ships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearancesreaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPNs Kyle Peterson as featuring an SEC-style offense.

In his 19 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleighs teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (63 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Caleb John Cal (13), Emma Grace (11), Carley Elizabeth (4) and Todd Anthony T (1).

Turn up The VOLume There is not another person that puts higher

expectations on myself and this program than I do, UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. There is no doubt in my mind that we have this program headed in the right direction, especially this season. Everyone is on the same page in terms of coming to work every single day with the mindset of getting better. In the long run, that is really the only thing we can control.

Since I got here in the fall of 2007, we have improved every aspect of this program, from the facilities, to the Academic Progress Rate to the NCAA RPI. The last piece of the puzzle is putting it all together on the field and getting to the postseason. Has it happened as fast as we would have liked? Most certainly not. I understand the expectations of our fans, and this may sound odd, but I like the fact that some of them arent too happy right now. I love that they expect greatness, just like I do. Have there been some extenuating circumstances that have slowed us down a little? Sure, but our goal from day one has been to build a program, not a team. I have no doubt that that stuff is in the past and we are moving forward. We are going to be a national power, no question about that. I am confident that we are headed in the right direction and cannot wait to get this season started.


Ash brings a lot of energy and great ideas to our staff, especially with his insight on base running. It is going to be a critical year in that area because of all of the bat changes and he has done a tremendous job revamping our efforts on that part of the game. We stole a lot of bases last year, but I think we are going to step it up another level this season and put a lot of pressure on opposing teams.


We have been working on a lot of small ball stuff. We don't have as many power guys, so we have to get back to the basics. A lot of bunting, base running and just small ball stuff. It's not a traditional team like we have had in the past but we are getting use to it. Top to bottom, it's just a group of scrappy guys. We are going to score runs in many different ways and put pres-sure on the other team to make mistakes."

Our attitude is one of high intensity. That is one thing that we have focused on in our practices and scrimmages this fall and leading up to the spring. The chemisty on this team is definitely improved over what it has been in the last couple of years. We have a close-knit group and a group of seniors to lead us. We've set the bar high from the very beginning. The SEC Tournament is a bare minimum."

uUT's 21 outfield assists are the most it has recorded since the statistic was first kept during the 2000 campaign.. Chris Fritts leads the team with eight, followed by six by Charley Thurber, three each by Andrew Toles and Chris Pierce and one by Drew Steckenrider.

uAfter starting the season on a roll at the plate, the Vols have hit a rough patch offensively lately. The team batting average topped out at .342 15 games into the year, but has since dropped to .273 as the Big Orange is hitting just .229 in SEC games.

uSeven different UT pitchers have combined to record a total of 12 saves this year, after the entire team had just four in 2010.

uThe Vols have hit six home runs on the first pitch of an at-bat this season.

uTennessee has struck out just 290 times this

season, the second-fewest of any team in the SEC.

LINE IN THE SANDTennessee has a pretty good idea of how the

game is going to end up once the sixth inning rolls around this year. When leading after that frame, the Vols are an impressive 22-1. When trailing, however, they are 0-26.

MR. (DEFENSIVE) WIZARDTennessee junior shortstop Zach Osborne has

been put his significant defensive abilities on full display this season, accumulating just eight errors through 47 games played.

He has been even more impressive in SEC play, during which he has made just two miscues, one of which resulted in a bruised finger that forced him out of the lineup recently. That error was his first in 18 league games and snapped a streak 78 defensive chances without an error (29 puttous, 49 assists).

GRUVER TABBED TO CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM

Tennessee junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Canfield, Ohio, will move on to the national ballot for Academic All-American honors which will be selected later this month

A kinesiology major, Gruver sports a cumulative GPA of 3.78. He is the 10th Volunteer to ever earn academic all-district honors and first since Julio Borbon picked up second-team accolades in 2006. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must have a 3.3 or better cumulative GPA and be in their second year of competition and academically at a school.

SIX VOLS ON MLB OPENING DAY ROSTERS A total of six former Vols were on the Opening Day roster of an MLB team, not including members of two coaching staffs. Luke Hochevar became just the third UT player to ever earn the honor of being his team's Opening Day starting pitcher, doing so for this year's Kansas City Royals. The only other two Vols to do so are Tommy Bridges with the Detroit Tigers (1933, 1939 and 1943) and Tommy Smithson with the Texas Rangers (1983). In his first full season in the bigs is Toronto Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia. Chase Headley enters his fifth year with the San Diego Padres while Julio Borbon begins his third year with the Texas Rangers. A nine-year MLB veteran, R.A. Dickey is in his second year with the New York Mets, while Todd Helton is the longest-tenured former Vol as he begins his 15th season in a Colorado Rockies uniform.

THE TALENTED MR. NORFORK (FROM RIPLEY) One of the premier hitters in the nation this season, UT senior second baseman Khayyan Norfork has hit safely in 38 of the first 51 games of the 2011 campaign and leads the team with 19 multiple-hit contests. The Ripley, Tenn., native is also among the top 20 in the nation and is tied for the SEC lead with 28 stolen bases.

GRUVER SETTING THE TONE ON THE MOUND Junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver has done a fantastic job setting the tone for the UT pitching staff. In his first three starts alone, he led the Vols to a pair of shutouts before tossing a complete game in his fourth start. So far this year, he has struck out 77 and walked just 26 in a team-high 88.1 innings of work, averaging nearly seven innings per start. He went six scoreless against Milwaukee on Opening Day before shutting down Canisius for seven frames on Feb. 26 when he posted a career-high 10 strike-outs. He has now pitched 6.0+ innings 15 times in his career, including 12 of his 13 starts this season.

After firing a four-hit, seven-inning complete game in the first contest of a doubleheader at No. 24 Alabama on April 16, junior southpaw Steven Gruver was named to the CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Weekly Honor Roll for the second time

Senior third baseman Matt Duffy posted one of the most memorable offensive performances in Tennessee history against New Orleans on March 9, 2011, becoming just the second UT player to ever hit for the cycle. Duffy finished the contest 4-for-6 at the plate with a career-high three runs scored and four RBIs. He had a double in the first inning, a triple in the fourth, his second home run of the season in the fifth and a single in the eighth.

DUFFY LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK A transfer from Vermont, UT senior third base-man Matt Duffy has been one of the team's most consistent players this season, starting all 51 games at third and hitting .309 in the middle of the lineup. After going hitless in 17 consecutive at-bats at one point, he broke out of his slump by going 4-for-9 (.444) in the three-game series at Alabama.. The Milton, Mass., native is tied for the team lead with six home runs and 37 RBIs and ranks third in the SEC with 13 HBPs. After a slow start in 2010, his first at Tennessee, Duffy picked up the pace at the end of the year, leading the Big Orange with a .348 batting average in SEC play.

CATAPANO HAS SIGHTS SET ON MARINESUnless the option to continue his baseball career

presents itself, Catapano plans on entering Officer Candidates School, a 10-week program in Quantico, Va., designed to train, evaluate and screen can-didates for potential as Marine Corp officers. Graduates of OCC are commissioned immediately upon graduation as Second Lieutenants and sent to The Basic School at Quantico for six months of further training.

RAMSEY ON JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST In his first season as the starting catcher at Tennessee, junior Matt Ramsey has solidified him-self as one of the top catch-and-throw backstops in the country, gunning down 13 of 29 potential baserunners (44.8%). He was recently added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given to the top catcher in the country.

BENNETT OFF TO STRONG START After hitting 27 home runs as a senior at Farragut High School, UT freshman catcher/DH Ethan Bennett has wasted little time adjusting to the college game, as he is tied with senior Matt Duffy for the team lead with six home runs and is hitting .263 (31-for-118) with 24 RBIs through his first 38 games at Rocky Top. After missing the first two weekends of the season with a hamstring injury, Bennett exploded onto the scene with four home runs in three games. During that stretch, he hitting .583 (7-for-12) with 16 RBIs and six runs scored. Bennett's talent isn't limited to the baseball dia-mond though, as he is also an accomplished musi-cian with the ability to play the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano.

VOLS OFF AND RUNNING Prior to the season, there was quite a bit of talk about Tennessee implementing a new, more aggressive baserunning philosophy. The Vols have walked-the-walk so far in 2011 as they have record-ed 86 stolen bases in the first 51 games of the sea-son, good for second in the SEC. By comparison, UT never reached that total since it had 87 in 2007. The new baserunning program was on full dis-play on Feb. 27 against Canisius, when the Big Orange was a near-perfect 9-for-10 on the base-paths, including a pair of double steals and three thefts of third. The last time a Tennessee team had nine stolen bases in one game came against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003. UT had been successful in 20 straight stolen base attempts and 29 of 30 tries before having a runner thrown out on March 9. With 28 thefts, senior Khayyan Norfork is tied for the league lead and just shy of the total for the entire South Carolina (32) team. Not far behind Norfork is speedy freshman Andrew Toles who has the fourth-most stolen bases in the SEC with 20 in 26 attempts. That ties Lar Gilligan (1989) for the third-most ever by a Tennessee freshman.

Former University of Tennessee standout student-athlete and longtime baseball coach Bill Wright passed away on April 21. A Knoxville native, Wright was the starting guard on Tennessee's 1943 SEC Champion basketball squad. Wright, who had a promising career in professional baseball cut short by illness, was baseball and basketball coach at Knoxville West High School before being hired in 1960 by Bowden Wyatt as the first full-time academic advisor at UT. Wright was promoted to head baseball coach at Tennessee in 1963, and compiled an impressive overall record of 408-308-2 (.570) during his 19 years with the Vols. The longest-tenured coach in UT baseball history, Wright's 408 victories were the school record when he retired and that total remains second in program history.

SAVING THE DAY One of the most eye-popping stats for Tennessee this season has come from the back of the team's bullpen. After recording four saves over the course of the entire 2010 campaign, the Vols already have 12 saves in 51 games this season, with seven differ-ent pitchers doing the honors no less. Matt Ramsey and Nick Williams have three, Zack Godley has two, while Nick Blount, T.J. Thornton, Levi Dean and Drew Steckenrider each have one. With nine career saves, Ramsey is currently tied with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth most in Tennessee history.

VOLS MAKING THE GRADE Academics have been a top priority for the Vols since Todd Raleigh arrived in 2008. Proving that point, Tennessee increased its multi-year APR to 936, up from 850 in 2005. That increase represented the largest single-year jump by any team at UT as it had an APR of 898 last year. For the 2009-10 school year alone, the Vol baseball team posted a spectacular 982 APR.

VOLS NOT LISTED IN NOTICE OF ALLEGATIONS The University of Tennessee received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Feb. 23. While an examination into potential rules violations by the University of Tennessee baseball program was refer-enced in the initial Letter of Inquiry from the NCAA, there were no alleged violations by the baseball program listed in this Notice.

RALEIGH REACHES CENTURY MARK AT UT With a 7-3 road victory over Lipscomb on March 23, Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh collected his 100th win at Rocky Top. In his fourth season with the Vols, the UT skipper is now 106-112 (.486). Raleigh becomes just the fourth Tennessee coach to reach that mark in Knoxville, joining John Whited (145 wins/1982-87), Bill Wright (408/1963-81) and Rod Delmonico (699/1990-2007).

SHUTOUT STREAK OVER Prior to its 4-0 victory over Milwaukee on Opening Day (2/18), Tennessee's last shutout came

on March 10, 2007, a span of three years, 11 months and eight days (209 games), when James Adkins and Ryne Simpson combined to blank Siena, 5-0, in Knoxville. It didn't take the Vols to pick up another shut-out as they accomplished the feat once again just a week later against Canisius (2/25), also by a 4-0 score. UT picked up another on March 9 with a 14-0 blanking over New Orleans.

NORFORK EXCELS ON OPENING DAY...AGAIN For the second straight season, Vol second base-man Khayyan Norfork opened the year with a bang. After going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in his UT debut against Xavier in 2010, Norfork kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-for-4 effort, knocking in three of the team's four runs against Milwaukee in its 4-0 victory. In his two Opening Day starts combined, Norfork is 6-for-9 (.667) with four RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

RECORD-SETTING ATTENDANCE ON OPENING WEEKEND

Tennessee set a new school-record for total atten-dance in a home-opening series, drawing 6,111 fans (2,037/game) to the three-game set against Milwaukee, Feb. 18-20. The previous record was set in 1997 when the Vols drew 5,877 over three games

against Eastern Kentucky. With 2,345 on hand on the first day of the 2011 season, UT had its second-highest attendance for a home-opening contest, behind only the 2.753 that saw the Vols take on Louisville on Feb. 25, 1995.

ROCKY TOP BLOODLINES Freshman centerfielder Andrew Toles was born to bleed orange. A fourth-round selection by the Florida Marlins last June, Toles decided to put his professional career on hold in order to attend the same school where his father and uncle both excelled on the gridiron. His father, Alvin, was a hard-hitting linebacker at Tennessee (1981-84) before being drafted in the first round of the 1985 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints. His uncle, Johnnie Jones, also is the fourth-leading rusher in Tennessee history (82-84) and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. His mother, Vicky, meanwhile, played basketball at the University of New Orleans, and his sister, Morgan plays basketball at Auburn.

NEW FACES IN THE CROWD The Volunteers return 17 players, including seven starters, from last year's squad which finished with a record of 30-26. Joining them is a talented group of 14 newcomers, headlined by freshman Andrew Toles, a fourth-round pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, and last year's Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, Ethan Bennett from Farragut High School. All 14 newcomers have already made their way into a game this season.

NEW FACES ON THE COACHING STAFF In addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee also welcomes a pair of new coaches in assistant coach Ash Lawson and volunteer assistant Barrett Shaft. A former head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan, Lawson comes to Rocky Top from the San Diego Padres for whom he was a regional crosschecker. He was named the Padres' Scout of the Year in 2006. Shaft is in his first season as a volunteer assistant after serving as a manager for the team last year. He is a 2008 graduate of Western Carolina.

In an effort to get a few laughs out of his teammates and fans this season, senior Tyler Horne selected Elton John's "Circle of Life" from the animated motion picture "The Lion King," as his walk-up song. It has achieved its stated goal as both players and fans alike have embraced it. When Horne strides to the dish, it is not uncommon to see people imitating the scene from the movie where Rafiki presents Simba for all of the kingdom to see.

HOMEGROWN TALENT PLENTIFUL ON TENNESSEE ROSTER Tennessees roster includes 12 players from the state of Tennessee (38.7 percent of the roster). Five Vols are from Knox County and one is from Sevier County (Seymour), while two others hail from West Tennessee and four are from Middle Tennessee. Four of the local players hail from Farragut High School, including senior Rob Catapano, junior Matt Ramsey and freshmen Ethan Bennett and Nick Williams. Bennett was named a 2010 Louisville Slugger High School All American, Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and TBCA Class AAA Player of the Year after setting a state single-season record with 27 home runs. He also hit .420 with 73 RBIs and scored 57 runs and set the national record for home runs in consecutive games, belting 16 during a 10-game stretch in April. Williams also played a big role in leading Farragut to three straight state titles with Bennett, going 19-0 with 137 strikeouts and an 0.85 ERA during his three seasons on the varsity squad.

THE COLOR ORANGE On Sunday, Feb. 20, ESPN aired a feature-length documentary on former two-sport Tennessee star Condredge Holloway, entitled "The Color Orange." The documentary, produced and directed by country music star Kenny Chesney, detailed Holloway's collegiate career as the first black quar-terback in the SEC. In addition to his exploits on the gridiron, Holloway also served as the starting shortstop at UT, garnering first-team All-America recognition in 1975 after hitting .396 with 20 RBIs and two home runs.

BASEBALL PARTICIPATES IN LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK, RAISES MORE THAN $5,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH For the fourth straight year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night

Walk Thursday evening at Circle Park on the UT campus. Since becoming involved with the event in 2007, the Volunteers have now helped to raise nearly $30,000, including over $5,000 this year, in support of research into the treatment and preven-tion of cancer.

SERIES HISTORYTennessee trails the all-time series with Auburn, 34-82, dating back to the first meeting between the

two squads in 1948, a 13-6 Auburn win in Knoxville. The Vols are 17-34 all-time against the Tigers at home at Rocky Top and Auburn holds a 6-4 advantage over the last 10 contests between the two squads, includ-ing taking two of three last season.

LAST SEASON After taking the first game of the series at Auburn last season behind a stellar effort by starting pitcher Stephen McCray, the Vols dropped the next two to suffer its third straight series loss to the Tigers. In the opener, McCary tossed 7.1 strong innings and was backed by a trio of home runs from Cody Hawn, Blake Forsythe and Matt Ramsey, as the Big Orange picked up a 9-3 triumph. The Tigers bounced back in dramatic fashion the next day, evening the series with a dominating 18-0 victory. The Orange and White managed just three hits on the day, getting a double from Hawn and sin-gles from Matt Duffy and Chris Fritts. Auburn scored all of its runs in the first five innings before three dif-ferent UT relievers - Dylan Hochevar, Alan Walden and Drew Steckenrider - were able to stop the bleeding. In the rubber match on Sunday, Tennessee fell behind early and couldn't recover. The Vols actually out-hit the Tigers, 11 to nine, but scored just twice in a 9-2 loss. Ramsey was spectaclar out of the bullpen, retiring all seven batters that he faced, including three strikeouts after coming in with two outs and two on in the bottom of the sixth.
