ESTABLISHED IN 1894, Third Street has been enriching the lives of young people, their families and neighborhoods through affordable access to high-quality arts instruction for 125 years. Rooted in the settlement movement of the 19th century, Third Street was founded by Emilie Wagner, who began teaching piano and violin to a handful of immigrant children in the Lower East Side. Ms. Wagner created an oasis of artistic enrichment and provided social services for immigrant families settling in this burgeoning community.

Everyone has a place at Third Street. From toddlers to teens to adults—we provide a nurturing environment for students to grow as musicians and as individuals while our tuition assistance programs ensure that there are no financial barriers for our aspiring artists. More than 75% of Third Street students receive financial assistance, which includes need-based financial aid, merit-based scholarships and deeply subsidized enrichment classes, such as Chamber Music, Theory and Composition and Music Production. For students, music and dance training helps them develop their creativity and critical thinking, builds self-confidence and contributes to their long-term advancement, both as artists and individuals.

Third Street also serves as an artistic and cultural hub in New York City, offering more than 250 free concerts and performances every year, featuring its students, teachers and renowned guest artists, reaching up to 10,000 audience members.

We hope to see you here!

GROUP LESSONS (45 MIN) are for our younger learners and for first and second year members of our Partners Program. Lessons take place in small, fun and supportive groups of three or four students of a similar age and skill level.

FLEX PASSES (2-4-8-HOURS) offer adults flexibility in scheduling their lessons and the opportunity to try a new instrument out before making a long-term commitment. They include either 2, 4, or 8 hours of individual lessons that are scheduled at a date and time that is mutually agreed upon by teacher and student.

CLASSES: Ranging from music theory and composition to improvisation and music production, students can enhance their learning experiences with supplemental classes. Students enrolled in individual lessons receive a significant discount on these classes.

ENSEMBLES: An integral part of learning to become a musician and artist, our ensembles cross departments to create orchestras, bands, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, choirs, rock bands, and more. Discounts are available to students enrolled in individual lessons at Third Street.

BENEFITS OF INDIVIDUAL LESSONS AT THIRD STREET• A chance to study with some of the finest New York City music and dance faculty • Significant discounts to Third Street ensembles and additional enrichment classes* • Access to free piano accompanists during select lessons and performances* • Valuable performance opportunities • Free Master Classes with world-renowned guest artists • Opportunity to receive merit-based scholarships

HOW WE TEACHA TRADITIONAL APPROACH to learning an instrument is generally for students who already have developed fine motor skills and who are able to simultaneously focus on multiple facets of instrument study. This includes the ability to listen, read notes, and the physical coordination of handling an instrument. This approach is appropriate for children ages five and older, depending on the instrument. The repertoire is customized to the student’s needs and interests.

THE SUZUKI METHOD is recommended for beginning string, flute, and piano students ages 3.5 and up. Developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, the Suzuki approach is based on how children learn their native language—exposure, action, and repetition. Pieces are learned by ear and played from memory, and lessons are paired with a weekly repertoire class that immerses students with others at their age and skill level. Parental involvement and group learning are core components of this approach and note reading is taught at the appropriate time.

Questions about which approach to choose? Contact Student Services.
