2 Shepherd’s Cove Hospice Annual Report 2018

A Message From Our CEO In 2018, Shepherd’s Cove had the privilege of serving 1,326 individuals and their

families. That means that we, the staff and volunteers, had 1,326 opportunities to serve, make an impact, and make a lasting impression. Although we are not perfect, we strive for excellence. And, we strive to make positive impressions during the difficult end-of-life journey. It is our goal to create life-changing experiences while providing compassionate, knowledgeable care to those on a personal end-of-life road, as well as their family and others identified as significant in their

lives. We get one opportunity in our line of service. There are no “do-overs.” While it is our purpose to create life-changing experiences for those we serve, we also strive toward the same goal for our referral sources, vendors, staff, volunteers, donors, and the communities at large. It is important to this agency to support the communities who continue to support our business of ministry. As you read this 2018 annual report, you will see how we have affected many people. As a supporter of Shepherd’s Cove, I hope this information gives you pride in being part of this agency. However you have been involved in this work,

whether through a gift of time, talent, or treasure, I hope you also encountered a life-changing experience. On behalf of the boards of directors, staff, and volunteers, we appreciate the on-going support that enables us to continue to serve. Although we cannot change the outcome of the journey, we can impact the journey in a life-changing way.

CEO Rhonda Osborne, RN, BSN

Thank you for your service and support! This year, we honored Dr. Alfred Ratcliffe, Jr., who retired from service as hospice physician for Shepherd’s Cove and president of the board of directors. Shepherd’s Cove presented him with a special award in recognition of his service at our Friendsgiving event.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the

Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts

us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble

with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

It is the mission of Shepherd’s Cove, a non-profit agency, to provide, with a servant's heart, exceptional individualized care for those coping with end-of-life issues.

The History of Shepherd’s Cove HospiceShepherd’s Cove Hospice, founded as Hospice of Marshall County, began in 1982, in what is now a small meeting room in the Guntersville Recreation Center.

The grassroots, all-volunteer, non-profit agency grew out of the vision of Gayle Roadruck, who believed with all her heart that families nearing the end of life deserved more support than was being offered in Marshall County.

With Gayle’s vision as the foundation, and over a period of 37 years, Shepherd’s Cove Hospice is very proud to now serve Blount, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, St. Clair and Marshall counties!

We Honor VeteransShepherd’s Cove Hospice received the distinction of a level 3 partner of the We Honor Veterans program in 2017. WHV is a four-tiered program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organiza-tion and the Department of Veterans Affairs. WHV partners seek to meet the unique needs of America’s veterans at the end of life. In 2018, SCH served more than 82 veterans through hospice care.

Get a Deal. Make a Difference.

In 2018 the Hospice of Marshall County Thrift Shoppe saw growing excitement as the staff and community prepared for a new look and a new location. Construction took place throughout the year on its new location on U.S. Hwy 431 beside WinSouth Credit Union in Albertville. Everyone looked forward to more retail space, improved efficiency in storage and drop-off, and significantly more parking spaces for shoppers.

In addition to the excitement over the new location, we saw growing support for the store as sales at the Thrift Shoppe grew to $557,540 in 2018! A donation to the Shepherd’s Cove Thrift Shoppe not only blesses the donor with clean closets and a tax deductible donation, but allows Shepherd’s Cove to continue to “provide with a servant’s heart, exceptional, individualized care for those coping with end of life issues.” A donation might be a bag full of items or a truck full of items! We also pick up items using our box truck.

On April 19, we hosted a Nifty Thrifty Night Out. We encouraged all attendees to come dressed in their best or wackiest Thrift Shoppe attire for dinner, fun awards, and updates on the new Shoppe. The evening also included a silent auction with items from the Shoppe. Proceeds supported Shepherd’s Cove.

8 Shepherd’s Cove Hospice Annual Report 2018

In 2018, we celebrated our 13th annu-al Race to Remember! More than 800 participants and volunteers came out to remember loved ones and show their support for end-of-life care. The event helped raised more than $67,000 for Shepherd’s Cove!

Shepherd’s Cove Palliative Care, formerly known as the Palliative and Supportive Care Alliance, is an entity funded by the Shepherd’s Cove Foundation. It provides palliative care that bridges the gap between patient comfort and medical treatment. This care allows the patient and their family ease in navigating the health care system with greater access to care and clearly defined goals. Care with Shepherd’s Cove allows the patient and their family to avoid unnecessary treatments, procedures, and hospital stays. Our mission is “to improve quality of life through patient and family-centered symptomatic care.”

Success in 2018Thank you for making 2018 our best fundraising year yet! Our community generously gave to provide hope and comfort to grieving families through many events and invitations to invest in our mission. Partnerships with compassionate individuals, businesses and other organizations throughout our nine-county service area are vital to ensure everyone has access to life-changing experiences made possible through hospice, palliative care, and grief support programs.

We are one year closer to the end of our Vision 2020 campaign that was launched in 2015 to achieve some strategic objectives to secure our past, present and future as a community-based hospice agency. Our goal to eliminate debt, expand services and create a strong preservation fund have never been more important! Thank you for giving hope and comfort to grieving families in our community. We look forward to a strong 2019!
