College of Business Lifetime Entrepreneurship Award Event
Celebrating Entrepreneurship Colorado Springs is home to world-class entrepreneurs, both past and present. In 2009, the UCCS
College of Business Alumni Association began honoring one individual each year with the Lifetime
Entrepreneurship Award. We invite you to be among an exclusive group of partners to host this
prestigious event, which has become a tradition in the community and a reminder of the legacy
we inherit from those who are brave enough to build their own businesses.
The annual awards luncheon serves as a fundraiser for the programs of the College of Business
Alumni Association, which benefit students, alumni and community members. As part of our
celebration and support of entrepreneurship in the region, a portion of the event proceeds will
help support the Career Coaching Program, which aims at preparing junior and senior students
for the workplace through mentorship provided by alumni and local business professionals.
The promotion of the award and the event will reach thousands of local business people as we
recognize the contributions of our local entrepreneurs. Our distinguished past honorees include:
2009 — Mr. Gary Loo
2010 — Mr. Bruce E. Shepard
2011 — Mr. Joseph C. Woodford
2018 Honoree — Mrs. Brenda Smith Brenda has been a true champion of our community through
business and philanthropy for several decades. She received her
B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting
from UCCS in 1978. Having been raised by a single mother after
her father died, Brenda worked her way through college,
sometimes being the only female in her accounting classes.
Dedicated to her field, she spent over 36 years at BKD, LLP in
Colorado Springs and was the first woman to be appointed
managing partner and elected to the company’s governing board.
Brenda saw an opportunity to draw upon the community’s past while embracing today’s
innovations when she embarked on a new entrepreneurial pursuit in 2013 by purchasing the
newly renamed Garden of the Gods Collection with business partner Judy Mackey.
Her many and various charitable pursuits include founding the Colorado Springs Leadership
Institute, co-founding the Colorado Springs Chamber Nonprofit Partnership, and spearheading
the establishment of an endowment in the name of UCCS accounting Professor Kirk Wilcox.
The 10th Annual Lifetime Entrepreneurship Award
Luncheon will be held on campus
Friday, May 18, 2018 from 11:30am-1:30pm.
