2013 Recipient

Ruslan M. Medzhitov, Ph.D.David W. Wallace Professor of Immunobiology | Yale University School of Medicine | HHMI Investigator

For his discovery of a class of proteins called the Toll-like receptors, which recognize toxic proteins andfacilitate the immune response to them.

2014 Recipient

Jennifer A. Doudna, Ph.D.Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology | University of California, Berkeley | HHMI Investigator

For her discoveries of the structure of RNA molecules in complex with proteins leading to her elucidation of cellular functions including bacterial immunity as exemplified by the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) system.

2015 Recipient

Karl Deisseroth, M.D., Ph.D.D.H. Chen Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences | Stanford University | HHMI Investigator

For the development of optogenetics and CLARITY as tools to study the functions of cells, especially neurons.

2016 Recipient

Jeannie T. Lee, M.D., Ph.D.Molecular Biologist, Massachusetts General Hospital | Professor of Genetics, Harvard Medical School | HHMI Investigator

For uncovering the functions and mechanics of long, noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in epigenetic regulation, using the X chromosome as the model.

The Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences recognizes the outstanding achievements of an exceptional young scientist. First awarded in 2013 by the FNIH, the medal is bestowed by philanthropist Ann Lurie, reflecting her passion for advancing biomedical research and medical care.

David M. Sabatini, M.D., Ph.D.Member, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research | Professor of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology | HHMI Investigator

For discovery of the mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) pathway as a regulator of growth and metabolism in response to nutrients.

Zhijian “James” Chen, Ph.D.George L. MacGregor Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science | Professor of Molecular Biology at theUniversity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center | HHMI Investigator

For discovery of the cGAS enzyme and its DNA-sensing pathwayand their impact on immune defense and autoimmune disease.

The Lurie Prize jury consists of six distinguished biomedical researchers, chaired by Dr. Solomon H. Snyder, Director-Emeritus of The Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University and Vice Chairman of the FNIH.

Dr. Nathan’s innovative research on tuberculosis is achieving progress in fighting antibiotic drug resistance and improving treatment methods.

LEWIS C. CANTLEY, PH.D.Meyer Director, Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center, Weill Cornell Medical College / Ronald P. Stanton Clinical Cancer Program, New York-Presbyterian

Dr. Cantley’s pioneering cancer research has resulted in revolutionary treatments for cancer, diabetes and autoimmune diseases.

RONALD M. EVANS, PH.D.Professor & Director, Gene Expression Laboratory and March of Dimes Chair in Molecular & Developmental Biology, Salk Institute for Biological Studies / Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator

Dr. Evans is an authority on the roles of hormones in disease. He discovered nuclear hormone receptors, molecules that are primary targets in the treatment of some cancers, and identified a new hormone that appears to be the molecular trigger controlling the formation of fat cells.

RICHARD GOODMAN, M.D., PH.D.Director, Vollum Institute and Professor, Cell & Developmental Biology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Oregon Health and Science University

Dr. Goodman’s seminal research on gene expression identified the cAMP-regulated enhancer, a critical control element in many genes expressed in the body.

SOLOMON H. SNYDER, M.D., CHAIRDistinguished Service Professor of Neuroscience, Pharmacology & Psychiatry, Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Dr. Snyder’s identification of receptors for neurotransmitters and drugs, and elucidation of the actions of psychotropic agents have led to many advances in neuroscience. He received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research for his research on the opioid receptor.

SUSAN S. TAYLOR, PH.D.Professor, Department of Pharmacology, University of California San Diego

Dr. Taylor’s research has made great leaps forward in terms of elucidating the structure, dynamics and localization of protein kinase A (PKA), one of the cell’s most important signaling molecules. PKA helps to regulate memory, development, cell growth and cell death.
