Welcome to Pamlico County. We are glad you are visiting us. Whether you are here for business or pleasure please take the time to explore:
• Our beautiful extensive waters near the Intra Coastal Waterway, the Pamlico Sound and the wide waters of the Bay and Neuse Rivers…with creeks and tributaries where flounder, striped bass, trout and shrimp hide from pods of dolphin looking for breakfast! All support our commercial fishermen and sports fisherman alike.
• Our museums, featuring artifacts and displays of our history, dating back to the early 1700s.
• Pamlico County, our open roads through forest and agricultural land provide abundant “farm to table” crops, timber and fresh seafood to the State, Nation and world.
• Our commercial centers in Grantsboro, Bayboro and Oriental…and all along our main thoroughfare Highway 55 provide shopping and dining at our local restaurants.
• We offer a friendly “country feel” and public schools, as well as outstanding charter schools and an award winning community college.
• We have an extensive non profit community, some of which sponsor the Festivals you will see highlighted in this guide.
We hope you will come back, and consider joining our growing residential population with many new residents from all parts of the country. Please take a look at our directory and ads in the visitors guide highlighting our many residential neighborhoods.Should you need any information to help you enjoy your stay please call the Pamlico County Chamber office and speak with Joyce Swimm (our Executive Director) or call me at 252-214-4150.Sincerely,Paul SlobodianPresident

Pamlico County has a total area of 566 square miles of land, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. From that total, 229 square miles consists of water. This makes Pamlico County a great place for kayaking, canoeing, sailing, fishing, skiing, and enjoying all kinds of water recreation and sports. Our county hosts many commercial fishermen who harvest fresh seafood such as oysters, shrimp, crabs, and a wide variety of fish and contribute greatly to the vitality of our economy. Area restaurants are well known for this fabulous seafood which can also be purchased at the local fish markets. Many fishing tournaments and sailing competitions are held in Pamlico County. There is an abundance of waterfowl, beautiful land birds, deer, fox, bear, and many other animals for the nature lover in you. The 337 square miles of our land also gives opportunity to enjoy golfing, walking and bicycling trails, camping, and horseback riding.
Included in our cultural interests are two historical museums, The Oriental History Museum and the Pamlico County Heritage and Visitor’s Center. There are art galleries, a performing arts and civic theatre, numerous talented musicians and a wide variety of churches. Pamlico Community College offers special interest classes in such things as writing, boat building, basket weaving, carving, blacksmithing, home landscaping and Tai Chai. There are also many educational opportunities available for obtaining a certification or degree.
Our heritage includes at least five different Indian tribes who inhabited this area. They are the Neusick or Neuse River Indians; they evidently were the Iroquois who were affiliated with the Tuscaroras. Living on the Bay River were the Bay (or Bear) River Indians. The Pamlico River Indians also lived around both the Bay and Pamlico Rivers (Sir Walter Raleigh’s expeditions visited these Indians). The Secontans also extended from the Pamlico River South to The Bay River. The arrival of the white man in the 1600’s brought smallpox which began the demise and exodus of the Indians. The new immigrants began a life of fishing, farming and forestry. This way of life continued through the years being passed down through generations.
Many of these occupations still exist but have experienced major changes in the application of modern technology in the management of these industries. Technology enables these jobs to continue while allowing good stewardship of our environment. At the same time, our county has grown to include professionals in healthcare, marine services, the arts, guide services and more. We also have a variety of interesting shops which provide unique gifts, fascinating reading, and unusual jewelry as well as everyday items that are needed. We take pride in the fact that our businesses are set apart by their friendliness, customer service and attention to detail. We invite you today to work or play – visit or stay in Pamlico County!

9th Annual Oriental Dragon Boat Race & Festival
2018 Theme: “YEAR OF HOPE” DRAGON TEAMS RACING WITH A CAUSE!!
The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It has a history of more than 2,000 years, and is believed to have originated during the Warring States period. This ancient tradition has evolved into festivals and races around the world including international championship races.
This Race helps to supports the work of local charities and non-profits with the fundraising proceeds raised by the teams going to the charities of their choice.
It’s Oriental’s Ninth year for the Race and Festival on August 10-11, 2018. Last year we had 16 teams and more than 2,000 spectators to come to the races. One of the unpredictable elements that makes dragon boat racing so much fun is that the crews vary in makeup, style, intensity and purpose. Representing all ages from teens (12) to senior citizens (oldest last year 87), along with all races and experience levels. Dragonboat Racing is called “the ultimate team sport” by the sport’s ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of ages and skill levels ranging from novice to competitive and its ability to bring together diverse groups of people in a common, and healthy cause where synchronicity is as important as strength.
We have Military Men and Women’s Teams, Cancer Survivor Teams, Senior
Teams. Youth Teams, Club Teams, NonProfit Teams, Community Teams and Corporate Teams.
This is one of those Experiences of a Life Time! Your chance to check this off your BUCKET LIST! You you can count on this being an experience you will talk about all year long. Whether championship racers or complete beginners, young or old, this event offers something for everyone. Dragon boat racing is a Fun Day with Family, Friends or business associates that makes a difference for a great causes in their community.
We welcome new TEAMS OR INDIVIDUAL PADDLERS (teams are 20 paddlers, 1 drummer and preferably two stand-by paddlers in case someone is unable to show the day of the race) The individual paddler is welcomed as often teams may need additional paddlers for their team. Your registration covers everything you need: insurance, 90 minute practice time with your team in dragonboat, pfd’s, paddles, 10 x 20 tent for your team set up prior to your arrival with your team name on the tent, and the steerperson for your team. The Teams come up with the most amazing theme including special team looks and fight songs.
Great food by some of our local non profit vendors and including some Eastern North Carolina unique specialty food trucks. Lots of fun for the kids with face painting, children’s activities and time to search for their very own sharks teeth in load of fossil mine dirt from PotashCorp Aurora

Pamlico County Heritage Day
Pamlico County Heritage Day will be Saturday, June 2, 2018. The day is a showcase of the heritage of Pamlico County with emphasis on farming, fishing, and forestry, which were and continue to be the primary economic bases of the Pamlico County. Heritage Day is designed to be educational as well as fun for the whole family. In the Heritage Village, demonstrations such as shelling corn with an antique
corn sheller and the Blacksmith Shop are favorites for all ages. The one-room school house is open with coloring and similar activities for children. The 1950’s Barber Shop provides either actual haircuts or other activities. The museum hosts over 30 permanent exhibits and docents are on hand to provide tours. The Family History Center has volunteers available to acquaint visitors with the many resources available for genealogy including Ancestory.com and thousands of documents and printed materials.
There are numerous outside activities for children such a horse back riding provided by the Pamlico County Horsemen’s Association and games coordinated by 4-H in conjunction with youth camps in the area.
There is all day music including the Marine Corps Air Station band and local talent. Food and the largest bake sale in the county round out an amazing day of fun and activities that remind us of a simpler life in the beautiful eastern county of Pamlico!
Beginning with 2009’s forty vendors, the Oriental Rotary Club has steadily grown their annual April boat show to the point of hosting 105 exhibitors in 2017. And the show has grown in popularity to the extent that it is now one of the largest in-water shows between Annapolis and Savannah.
Over the years the impressive small-town show has added a nautical flea market and a wooden boat exposition. Recently they have also hosted a Down East NC master craftsman who builds a juniper skiff entirely during the 2 ½ day show. Oriental’s Rotarians then raffle off that custom boat to a lucky winner.
Since the show is in Oriental you might guess that it’s a sail boat show
because the town is famously known as the Sailing Capital of North Carolina. However, Oriental’s boat show also benefits by being in Pamlico County which is coming to be known as “North Carolina’s In-shore Fishing Capital”. You may expect to find every type of watercraft at Oriental’s show – from sail to power, from fishing to cruising, from electrics to paddle boats, from kayaks to fifty-foot yachts. Expect to find an impressive array of nautical and marine-related goods and services as well.
Make plans to attend the biggest and best-ever small-town boat show, the 10th Annual Oriental In-water Boat Show, Nautical Flea Market and Wooden Boat Expo, April 13-15. Pack a bag and bring your checkbook for some great boating deals – everyone else does! More information including a list of boat show exhibitors and their products is available at “OrientalBoatShow.com”.

Art On The Neuse Arts and Music Festival
What has a genuine Queen of Arts, a 14-legged dragon and sings? The renewed and expanded 2018 edition of Art on the Neuse Arts and Music Festival, presented by the Pamlico County Arts Council. The festival will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, May 12, 2018 -- just in time to pick up a one-of-a-kind local gift for mother’s day -- better yet, bring a mother!
Art on the Neuse, a favorite Pamlico County and regional event, has been reinvented for this 15-year milestone in the festival’s history. The festival is in a new and larger location -- the plaza and harborwalk area, surrounding O’Town restaurant and Pub, right on the waterfront in historic Oriental, NC and just around the corner from the Oriental farmer’s market. Art on the Neuse 2018 will have room for more artists and strolling, easy walkable access to several local restaurants and will have special hands-on and body-in (think, get ready to dance) activities for all age groups.
Opening ceremonies begin at 10 AM, hosted by Oriental’s own “Queen of Arts”, Mayor Sally Belangia, accompanied by the town’s Chinese mascot dragon. Visitors will enjoy pop-up performances by actors from Oriental’s Old Theater, audience inter-active dance with choreographer Wendy Osserman, founder of the Wendy Osserman Dance Company in New York City, and other special surprises during the day. There will also be activity booths -- come make some art, dance, or write a poem with the poets of Oriental.
Art on the Neuse 2018 is a celebration of the vibrant art life of Pamlico County. Sponsored by the Pamlico County Arts Council, Art on the Neuse 2018 is a
collaboration among Pamlico County’s local arts-oriented organizations, The Old Theater, Ol’ Front Porch Festival, the Pamlico Musical Society and local artists. Art on the Neuse 2018 will be a vibrant, multi-faceted event with something for everyone. Musicians and bands will play throughout the day on the O’town outdoor stage for the enjoyment of visitors (and the artists!) as they stroll the area and take in the wide variety of artworks and fine crafts offered. Proceeds from the festival support the Pamlico County Arts Council which provides funding for arts programs in Pamlico County throughout the year.
Coming by boat? Boaters can dock at Oriental’s town dock or anchor out and use the dinghy docks. Oriental is a great place to have fun and also to provision. Catch the Oriental farmer’s market on your way into the festival. And, when you need a lunch break, there are many places to eat within walking distance. While you’re here, don’t forget that dragons are art, too. Take a break to look for all the dragon eggs in town, but shhh, be quiet, as the dragons need their rest when they are nesting!
Check the Pamlico County Arts Council Website at: pamlicoarts.org and Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pamlicoarts/ for updates, as musical acts and artists get added to the roster. You can also follow the Pamlico County Arts Council on Twitter: twitter.com/Pamlico_Arts and Instagram: instagram.com/pamlicoarts/
Back in the day folks used to gather on the front porch of Capt. Billy and Lucille Truitt’s Ol’ Store at South Water and New streets to sit a spell and play music – bluegrass and folk mostly. The comforting strains of roots music would drift about town, luring passersby to stop and listen for a while.
The old general store is gone now, but the memories of those simpler times and the sounds of pick-up music have lingered in the hearts of long-time residents of this small harbor town on the Neuse River. It was from this history that the idea of an outdoor music festival using the front porches of Oriental as stages was born.
Oriental will hold its fifth annual Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival Oct. 5-6. The two-day festival has grown bigger and better every year. More than 3,000 people attended last year’s festival that featured North Carolina’s Tony Award-winning string ban, The Red Clay Ramblers, and Dom Flemons, The American Songster. More than two dozen varied groups and solo artists performed on the porches of 16 Oriental homes and businesses near and around Lou Mac Park on the riverfront.
“We are absolutely thrilled with how far the festival has come in just four years,” said Dottie Osmun, co-founder of the festival and president of its board of directors. “Our fifth annual festival is already in the planning stages and it’s going to be fabulous.”
The response to the festival has been strong from the beginning, and the musical offerings have grown as well. Last year the music ranged from folk, Americana, bluegrass, and country, to gospel, jazz, and blues. Twenty-six groups and solo artists participated. The lineup for the 2018 festival is in the works, but there is already strong interest from some of the state’s hottest new groups and performers, as well as from some longtime local and regional favorites. All porch and main stage performances are free.
The festival also features a Village Market on the riverfront with dozens of crafts people and artisans displaying their work, and a Food Park that eschews the typical festival food-truck arrangement and instead offers high-quality food items from Oriental’s fine restaurants and delis.
The featured musical act closes the festival on Saturday afternoon with a foot-stompin’ main stage performance before a large audience on a grassy expanse with beautiful views of the river.
Ol’ Front Porch Music Festival, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its purpose is to provide the region’s multi-cultural and racially diverse musical talent with support, promotion and performance venues and encourage development of roots music appreciation and skills in Pamlico County, in particular, among its youth.
The festival receives support from many generous donors, and from the Pamlico County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources and the National Endowment for the Arts. Contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The 38th Annual Croaker Festival
Mark your calendars for the weekend of June 29, 30 & July 1st when Oriental hosts “The Croaker Festival”! This year we are honoring Camps located in Pamlico County. This three day festival has become a popular small town festival drawing six to eight thousand patrons from near and far. Located on the beautiful waterfront overlooking the Neuse River festival goers enjoy family activities that provide many life long memories. The festival was established officially as a Festival in 1970 by the Oriental Women’s Club to give local non-profit organizations a venue for fundraising. Currently the Festival is organized by the Croaker Festival, Inc., a non-profit group of volunteers that give an enormous amount of time and effort to provide a quality festival for the Town of Oriental and Pamlico County. Please visit our website Croakerfestival.com to find out more about the festival.
The Festival grounds open at noon on Friday with a community bake sale and over seventy-five vendors participating. Arts and Crafts Booths, Information Booths, various types of Food Vendors fill up Lou Mac Park, South Ave, and surrounding area. Opening ceremonies begin at 4:00 which features our Pamlico County Community Band and Pamlico County Chorale. These organizations are made up of local singers and musicians who give their time freely to provide entertainment in the county throughout the year. This is followed by the Croaker Queen and Little Miss Minnow Pageant which provides scholarships to local High School students wishing to further their education. Friday night ends with a Street Dance featuring our local band “Saltwater
Gold” at the Main Stage located on Freemason Street.
Saturday brings lots of fun for the Patrons. The Festival Grounds open at 8am with all the vendors open for business. The Parade begins at 10am and features The Marine Band and Color Guard, floats, an array of Sudan entries, decorated golf carts, prancing horses, ending with our County’s Firetruck Brigade! At 11:00 live entertainment begins at the Main Stage starting with a concert by the Marine Band, followed by various bands featuring many of Pamlico County’s fabulous musicians. The Kids Park located on High Street keeps the children and adults busy riding the mechanical rides and bouncing in the Bounce Houses. There is also a free children’s area with ongoing activities like Tug-O-War, Watermelon Seed Spitting, Twister, miniature golf, or try your voice out at Karaoke. A Kids’ coloring contest is ongoing throughout the day. The Oriental Dinghy Club sponsors the annual Sailing Regatta which can be seen from the waterfront during the afternoon. To end the day put on your dancing shoes for the Saturday evening Street Dance beginning at 7pm at the Main Stage. This year’s featured Band will be the well-known “Embers” providing beach music at its best. The night comes to a close with a brilliant display of Fireworks over the Oriental Harbor.
Sunday morning brings our festival to an end with a non-denominational community church service at Lou Mac Park delivered by the local churches in Oriental. Please plan on joining us at this year’s festival so you and your family can also make some life long memories.
Imagine being able to get up close and personal with your favorite 1960’s muscle car, an immaculately restored antique touring car, a pristine British roadster or a flame-embellished hot rod pickup. Then imagine doing so with the 4-mile wide Neuse River as a scenic backdrop. That is exactly what Oriental’s annual classic car show will provide you.
Begun as a modest fund-raiser three years ago, the Oriental Rotary Club has grown the Oriental Classic Car Show to over seventy-five fine and rare vehicles, all of them displayed along the town’s South
Avenue to provide a striking back drop for the cars.
The most recent show attracted cars and trucks from as far away as Raleigh, Waynesville and south Virginia, all for the chance to compete for dozens of People’s Choice trophies but also just to snap a photo of their nice ride with that Neuse River back drop.
2018’s show will be held Saturday October 13. Information, car show history and registration information are available at: OrientalClassicCarShow.com

Running of the Dragon
Once upon a time a part-time resident of Oriental, Joe Cox, was pondering how to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Oriental. He must have laughed out loud to himself when the idea came to him that a town named “Oriental” should celebrate New Year’s Eve with a dragon like those used to celebrate “Chinese New Year”.
Being a talented artist and very gifted man, Joe set about creating a dragon. This first dragon, donned by a few stalwart revelers, ran around Oriental that New Year’s Eve, running through homes, around the village, startling, surprising, and delighting. There are still some who remember that first dragon. It’s been more than forty years and that first dragon has been lost to history. But, thanks to a deep and abiding sense of whimsy, dragons have come to be a part of everyday life in Oriental.
We still celebrate New Year’s Eve with the “Running of the Dragon”. Every New Year’s Eve since Joe Cox first created the idea, a dragon has emerged from the shed on Hodges Street that Joe first built his dragon in. Unfortunately, Joe passed away some years ago, but the homeowners who have since owned the “shed” have been very accommodating in allowing the tradition to continue.
Every New Year’s Eve for all these years, at the hours of 8 PM and 11 PM the dragon has emerged from the shed to walk among us. It is also tradition that everyone makes as much noise as possible, beating pots with metal spoons, banging drums, blowing whistles and horns. All this chaos is intended, as with Chinese New Year, to frighten evil spirits away from the new year. It is also considered very good luck to touch the dragon as it passes.
At 8 PM on December 31st, the dragon wanders, not exactly “running”, down Hodges Street, past the Town Dock to the end of the block, then turns around and wanders back to the shed, to wait for the 11 PM “run”, after which, the dragon will rest quietly until the next year. The “run”, with the street full of people making all sorts of noise, takes about twenty minutes. Then, revelers still have time to retire to their various parties out and about the area, secure in the knowledge that they have done everything possible to convince the spirit of the dragon to keep their new year safe and secure.
The legend “thickens” a tad here...since Oriental was so welcoming to its first dragon, word got out among dragons that Oriental was a wonderful place to be. Now, wandering around town, you
can see evidence that other dragons are here. The ultra-secret Dragon Protection Society (DPS) oversees their nests and lairs, protecting them and making every effort to keep them safe from harm. There are now so many dragons, that adults are often seen helping children with arithmetic by having them count the different dragons they see as they wander around town
One very dazzling dragon has even set up housekeeping in the Duck Pond near the harbor. Of course, we do have ducks sometimes, but here it’s more of a “Dragon Pond”. Luckily, the dragons that make Oriental home, are benevolent and kind. The one by the harbor is often seen allowing a Great Blue Heron to sit on its head to get a better view of the fish in the pond.
For many years local resident Grace Evans was the Keeper of the Dragon. She saw to our New Years dragon’s every need and was active in soliciting other dragons to come to town. Grace was awarded a plaque of thanks for all her attentions to our dragons. Now, others have taken up the mantle to take care of these creatures and the whole town watches out for them.

So, if you see a dragon’s nest
with a dragonlette emerging ...
shhhhhh!
Oriental was designated as the “Sailing Capital of North Carolina” in the 1980’s when so many residents of the Raleigh/Durham area commuted to the area each weekend to enjoy sailing on the Neuse River. The Inner Banks are protected waters and rarely offer the challenges that offshore sailing can present so most of the time it’s sailing weather. We even celebrate New Year’s Day with the “Instead of Football Regatta”.
So, if sailing is your love, your passion, your interest, your hope, Oriental is a great place to pursue it.

Goose Creek Island Homecoming Play
October 18 - 21, 2018
Always held the third weekend in October, this show features the talents of several generations of Goose Creek Islanders and is held at the Hobucken Community Center at 7:30 PM, Thursday - Saturday, celebrating tradition, music, dance, comedy skits and the unique flavor of their island home. Written, produced, directed and performed by local residents, the show has expanded from one to three performances over the years. Natives who have left to find work elsewhere come back in droves to enjoy the local talent, vowing to retire ‘at home’ on the island when they can.
Some mainlanders are allowed to join the entertainers on stage and audiences from three counties fill the Community Center on Schoolhouse Road in Hobucken for three nights. Tickets are available at the door when people line up at 6 PM for hot dogs, chili boats, drinks, popcorn and homemade goodies, to renew acquaintances, make new friends, and to get good seats.
Sunday worship at 10:30 AM offers local preachers on a rotating basis and is followed by a covered dish luncheon to culminate the homecoming celebration.
